We arrived at 12:30am and owner had the vacancy light on (thank goodness)! Room was so clean and beds were comfortable. A great little vintage style bathroom with a great show ever to freshen up. Will defs stay here again if on a long road trip south from cairns.

Had 1 night in a twin room. Extremely clean and the linen was fresh, clean and crisp. Would recommend a stay here. The single bed was on wheels which we like as we had a 2 yr old do we put all the beds together to prevent falling out. When we moved the single we where shocked to see how clean it all was behind it. Thankyou for the quality stay.

Pay extra and go somewhere else to stay!!
Accommodation extremely disappointing.
One sink only in kitchen/bedroom area, no plug. No kitchen cupboards
No vanity or basin in bathroom
No plates knives saucers kitchen wear, even though a microwave supplied
A work space bolted to the wall, too high to eat at
No casual table to sit at for meals, we ate on our laps sitting on the bed
Sign in room insists leave room clean and tidy, but no broom, dustpan, cleaning products

Room by the hour or a low rent Backpackers would have been cleaner. The photos in no way match the rooms, or the pool area. We slept in our clothes as we didnt want the filthy blanket touching us. Thank goodness we travel with our own pillow. I know you get what you pay for but there is no excuse for filth!

The room was 'nice' for $110 but my boyfriend and I were very unimpressed with general customer service. First, they had an already opened container of milk in the fridge and so when I went up to the office to ask for more, nobody came to the door! Then because we'd already had a 12 hour road trip and were looking to relax with a few movies, we found put after 10 minutes of searching that they had either a limited subscription with Aus Star or they just hadn't paid their bills, either way, there was no 'TV menu' in the room to let us know of this and this was very much false advertising n their art.
When checking out the next morning, I politely brought these matters up with the same lady who checked us in the night before and who lives on site, and she was rather dismissive and rude.
Not worth the money, keep driving to Airlie or Mackay if you're considering staying in Bowen.

Response from PearlyShellMotel, Owner at The Pearly Shell Motel
Responded 22 May 2013
I would like to take the time to respond to this customers review. These guests checked in after hours. The office is not open 24 hours a day to explain the workings of such things as Austar. We do not advertise that we have movie channels. We do have Austar and unfortunately the instructions had been removed from the room and were not available to this guest. The Fridge had in fact been defrosted the morning these guests checked in so it is very unlikely that the milk was from a previous stay. We pride ourselves on giving our customers the best service that we can provide. Unfortunately for this guest that does not mean a 24/7 concierge service.

Can I just say, FANTASTIC customer service. We were running about 4 hours late and the owners stayed back until 9pm to check us in.
We also left some belongings by accident and they called us to let us know and held them until we were on our way back to collect them. Rooms are clean.

There is not much available in Bowen for those travelling with their pets which led me to the Pearly shell. The owner was welcoming and accomodating, the room was clean and provided for all our basic needs, there is a pool to relax in and options for dinner are within a short walk or drive depending on your preference. If you're looking for a reasonably priced, traditional style motel room this is the place.

Booked the Pearly Shell at late notice because it was the only available room I could get but was very pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness, comfort and set up of the room. Highly recommend for the price, would stay again.
