This is the second time we have stayed here in one of their 2 amazing jacuzzi rooms. Such great rooms for the price and a nice mix of old and modern décor. Yes it is very sad and not great to hear the restaurant had closed, the hotel informed us straight away and gave us the new options. We loved the cooked breakfast here and having it as room service so were a little worried about the breakfast being continental and also not room service. On arrival I asked if I could come down and grab some breakfast in the morning, not only did they offer room service to have it brought up to us they even mage us and printed off a menu to pick things from, that is what I call going the extra mile, very impressed. I would highly recommend this hotel, I am sure they will have a new restaurant and bar open in no time at all, it has so much potential.

What’s happening? No staff, no atmosphere, no restaurant or bar. Unfortunately The Old Tollgate has quickly become a shadow of its former self. A glorified B&B guesthouse. The restaurant side has completely gone. No bar, no lunch or evening meals. The rooms are still okay, some very nice but now over priced. The breakfast that is included is poor. Gone has the full English, good choice of various fruits, yogurts, cereals and porridge to an Englishman’s attempt at a continental breakfast. A slice of smoked salmon and a couple of slices of cheap packet ham. No breakfast staff on hand to welcome guests, used tables not cleared and have to ask for choices to be refilled, orange juice, croissants and coffee. We have been staying here for 7/8 years, back in the Best Western days but this will be our last time. Thank you and goodbye.

Dear GrumpyBaz, Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay. We appreciate you taking the time to share your comments and your loyalty to The Tollgate. We understand your disappointment with the current offerings, which differ from your past experiences. While we recognise the inconvenience this causes, these decisions were essential for the hotel's long-term sustainability. Your feedback regarding the breakfast options and service have been noted. We're actively working to improve the current continental breakfast to include more variety and ensure proper staff presence. While a full English breakfast is not currently feasible, we are exploring alternative solutions. If you're open to a future visit, we encourage you to check back for updates on our progress. We're confident that the improvements we're implementing will create a unique and enjoyable experience for all of our guests to enjoy. Thank you for your understanding. The Old Tollgate Team.

Overall good stay. We were travelling with our small dog and so we're given a dog friendly room which seemed basic compared to previous stays sans dog. TV remote did not work properly, cleaning staff should check this daily. Beds were not serviced by maid and room not tidied after first night . Room got very hot overnight almost stuffy even with the heater off. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this but the breakfast tomatoes tasted of fish both mornings, no tomato taste at all. Chef was happy to cook vegetarian sausage but then left them off the hotplate so they were cold. Snug off restaurant was draughty when we chose to go for an evening drink and not very well organised furniture in there plus needed a clean.

We have just stayed for 2 nights on the Christmas Package. Arrived 24th until 26th. Have stayed here several times before when Best Western. We believe it is now privately run. This time we requested a favorite room which we were kindly allocated. The place is very cosy and all staff are friendly and helpful. Particular thanks to the wonderful ladies on reception who sorted a couple of small issues in our room (light bulb and hairdryer) extremely fast. Christmas lunch was really enjoyable, everyone went to.a big effort to ensure all guests enjoyed the day. Breakfast was very good selection with something for every taste and requested poached eggs perfection. Only one or two things would have greatly improved the 2 evening buffets. Disposable plates and wooden cutlery were not the best or easiest for Christmas Eve and also nothing on hot or cold counters were actually labelled so we had no idea what each dish was. Were eventually able to find someone to ask who was very helpful and informed us. Breakfast juices also a bit of guesswork. Lovely carvery for 25th lunch, good selection of meats and vegetables. Thanks to Mason who made sure we had nice fresh coffee with our 26th breakfast and kept very cheerful even though he was really busy and had worked the previous day. Thanks to all the team for a very good Christmas break and we will definately return again soon.

We’ve been coming here for the past 35 years for family events, our daughter had her 21st birthday party here and we’ve enjoyed lunch at Christmas and Boxing Day and always had an experience that’s been delightful. This last visit was in a large group that have been coming for our annual gathering for several years. We found the delightful starter buffet, always one of the highlights for us, has been replaced with a served small plate and a disappointing limited choice. The carvery itself was good, although the choice of vegetables was not as comprehensive and they had put bacon with the sprouts, my vegetarian wife would have liked to have a pain choice. The buffet desert has been replaced with a limited choice and frankly inedible and bland with no imagination. The desert was served half an hour after our main dish was cleared away and my desert came served in a tall cocktail glass with just half an inch of what was supposed to be “trifle ” and two inches of something that looked like a spray caned cream. My wife chose profiteroles, which had a coating that resembled chocolate, it was artificial plastic like and very sweet without any flavour. We understood that profitability is important and possibly changes had to be made to make it work, but on top of the changes to the food when we came to pay the bill we were expected to pay an additional service charge of 20%, which as there were 40+ diners in our party a huge amount extra. The experience was overall extremely disappointing. Hardly surprising it wasn’t busy as it normally is and we seemed to be the only people there that night. Please, please, please put it back to as it was.

Visited 6th December at 12:45 for a 13:00 booking. Our group was made up of two couples who have been regulars for many years. Our friends, who had their wedding reception there, sent me a message tonight that they would never return. We had the carvery main and a pudding plus one round of drinks. We were there for over two hours as the service was so slow. The carvery food was lukewarm but despite this was tasty. Had it been just my wife and I I would have asked for it to be heated in the microwave. Our friends drew the coldness of the carvery to the attention of the lady in charge who said “were we not asked if the food was ok shortly after we were served” we said no. She replied Oh! Service continued slowly and we and others in the restaurant waited for over half an hour for the sweet menu and order to be taken. Despite our concerns about the coldness of the main, which could be a potential health issue at a carvery, we decided to have a pudding. Unbelievably when my wife asked if she could have some brandy sauce with her choice she was told “only if you pay for it as it only comes with Christmas pudding”! We are not freeloaders but given the poor main course one would expect a degree of customer service. This was pointed out by our friends and the brandy sauce was forthcoming. The staff were all pleasant but very slow and inattentive. However, I would suggest not enough of them made it more difficult. We waited 15 minutes for the bill after asking each of the 3 waitresses. Neither couple have done this before but we decided to ask for the included service charge to be removed. At this stage things changed, the replacement bill arrived promptly we were thanked for our custom and wished a Happy Christmas. I guess they must have been embarrassed or worried about a negative review. We did have a moment of hilarity when we asked when we might be able to go to the carvery. We were told it won’t be long now and were sorry for the delay but they were busy. A quick reconnoiter of the queue was undertaken to find there was not a single person at the carvery. We pointed this out and were greeted by the customary “oh”! A truly Basil Faulty moment which made us laugh. In summary, prices have increased significantly, portion sizes have decreased, food quality has declined as has the level of service.
