The cottage 2 is unique and on a quiet road behind the pub. The staff and owner are friendly. The bedroom on upstairs and the living and bathroom is on the ground floor. The sofa bed is on the ground floor. Double bed is upstairs. The town is quiet and pleasant. There is a good bakery and few nice restaurant....

I really couldn't recommend this hotel for people seeking a local experience - probably OK for business travellers if better options unavailable. Rooms, breakfast and service all average. Needs refreshing.

Arrived soaking wet into Shap and straight out to this pub for a meal as we were advised it was the only place to eat in Shap apart from the fish and chip shop. The pub was busy at 6.30 with people watching football and the staff were quite offhand with us but possibly because they were so busy. I...

Really nice people running the place who are well organised. The rooms vary quite a bit but are all clean and absolutely fine for a night on the Coast to Coast. Good food & beer and a hearty breakfast.

Food excellent, great reception from the owners and rooms well appointed. There is not alot to do in Shap but if you need a bed for the night in the Coast to Coast walk there is not a better establishment.

We tried this pub out on our arrival in Shap after a very tough day's walking from Patterdale with a view to possibly dining there later in the evening. Just one real ale on offer and a bit lacking in any real character persuaded us to look elsewhere.

Proprietors and bar staff very friendly and helpful, rooms clean and nicely decorated ... Cosy and comfortable. Breakfast enjoyably English. Upon arrival, was pleasantly surprised by the friendly welcome and helpfulness of staff due to lack of local amenities Ie bus service and taxi service out of village, absolute reliance on own transport.

Saved my life when I was stuck on the motorway for 7 hours, and let me in at 0200! Nice room, but I did not get much of a chance to enjoy the pub as I was 7 hours late, but outstanding breakfast and best black pudding I have ever tasted. Extremely friendly and accommodating and really good prices, highly...
