In the heart of Montérégie, on the banks of the Richelieu river, the Hôtel Trois Tilleuls offers 21 country-style rooms and 18 suites, as well as the Artist restaurant with a unique cuisine of “bistronomic” inspiration highlighting the local products. The owner, Michel Barrette, added his touch to the hotel by offering his customers the opportunity to admire part of his collection of objects. Indeed, a mini-museum has been set up and allows you to see objects that belonged, among others, to JFK, Marylin Monroe, Maurice Richard, Michael Schumacher as well as several other Quebec and international personalities.

Yes, the grounds are nice, the view on the river is lovely, and the food is something you will neve forget. But I feel the price is too steep for what you get, and can actually get better value at other inns.

Decided to finish our vacation in Quebec on a high note and stay at this Relais & Chateaux property right on the river. The inn is easy to find, right off Hwy 20. We reserved a deluxe room to include dinner and breakfast. Our room was very nice with a small balcony that looked out directly over the river. There was a nice soaking tub right in the room and the bathroom shower had jets that aimed in any direction! Size wise, the room was a little small for what I would call deluxe. There was one chair only in the "seating" area and one small desk chair that if you pulled it out, would bump right into the end of the bed. The inn has no elevator at all, so use a small bag (carrying up those stairs!) and be forewarned no facilities for anyone with disabilities. The grounds are lovely! Swings to sit in and watch the river! It was quiet whe we were there, only three tables in the dining room occupied for dinner. Food was excellent. You "dine," not just hurry in to eat. Because our package included dinner/breakfast, tipping was interesting as the prices weren't broken out, or on the menu. May want to consider just the room and then dining at the restaurant off the price menu. Very humid being by the river. We didn't partake of the spa next door, but it looked nice. A nice way to end our stay in Quebec and would certainly recommend the property.

We stayed here by accident because the entire city of Montreal didn't have a single room for the night, and it forced us to look a bit outside the city. We arrived late. The staff was very helpful with our bags. The room was amazing with a balcony overlooking the river, a two person jetted tub, and a very comfortable bed. Very relaxing. We had a cooler with us and had our breakfast watching the river. We would go back here just to relax at this hotel.

I stayed there with my fiance and when we checked in a signed a legal document stating how much the room was going to cost us. When we went to check out, they changed the price and refused to give me a copy of what I originally signed. I asked to speak with a manager and "no one was there". When I proceeded to go outside to bring my fiancee in to discuss this matter, a man came out and told my fiancee "we don't need people like you here" When he asked what that meant the man didn't reply but I was made very clear that it was because he was black and we are an inter racial couple. I've written several emails to try and get some satisfaction from this horrible experience but have gotten little or no answers. I signed for one price and it's not right that it can just be changed without notice and that I had to pay. I'm disappointed because this was my first time to Canada and I had a terrible experience. This hotel is not friend;y if you have a problem.

Although the grounds of this hotel are very nice - situated right on the river - there is nothing else inviting about this hotel. We had a room on the ground floor, which was very nice to be able to step right out the patio door onto the back lawn. What was not so nice was the fact that someone left the door wide open one day while we were out of the room, leaving only the screen in place and all of our valuables unprotected to anyone who could have walked straight into the room from the back yard of the hotel. When we asked the front desk, they were very nonchalant about it and basically said "oh well, the maid noticed the bar holding to door closed was loose so perhaps the maintenance person left it open when they went in to fix the security bar.

One night we went to the outdoor patio to have a nice dinner. The waiter was extremely rude and acted like he did not understand a word I said as I was speaking French with an English accent. My wife, who is Francophone repeated exactly what I said - word for word - and suddenly he understood. Then my daughter - who is fluently bilingual - ordered her food and, once again, he acted as if he had no idea what she was saying. Once the food arrived, the flies descended upon our plates and we spent the meal shooing them away.

There are much nicer places to stay that cost less so do not stay at this hotel.

Over the last fifteen years or so, we would occasionally drive out to the Trois Tilleuls from Montreal to enjoy a real change from everyday dining. The setting was beautiful, the decor imaginative (on the theme of glass with its colors and textures), the service impeccable and caring (white table cloths, designer plates, handicap assistance, ... ) and the food nearly always tasty and refined.
Now it has all changed for the worse. The decor is banal (veneered tables, no table cloths - gone all the glass), though to be fair the building work is not yet completed; the menu is exotic on paper but insipid in reality; the service more-or-less "bistro style" and uncaring (except by waiters who knew us from the many previous visits).
The garden environment is spoilt by a large terrace for light lunches, and the three lime trees (les Trois Tilleuls) cut down for a VIP parking!
Presumably the change is dictated by a market research. Be that as it may, it is no longer worth the effort and will not provide a real escape.

Response from Reception3T, Responsable relations clients at Hôtel Trois Tilleuls

Dear customer, Thank you for taking the time to give your opinion on our establishment. A radical change of style is actually done in our facility and we are sorry that these changes do not suit you. The decor is modernized and the addition of the large terrace is a major asset to enjoy the magnificent view over the river. Best regards,

This was a return visit to celebrate our 12 years of happiness and it was not the wonderful experience that we first encountered at this Hotel. We saw that they were in the process of renovations, but what happened to us had nothing at all to do with the renovations but all to do with a lack of training and proper client service. We later found out that the Hotel was sold a few months ago to a new administration. Someone should send them to the Ripplecove (Ayers cliff) to show them how it is done. We booked for the Hotel's 40th anniversary package at 40%. What we ended up getting was 40% less service, food and quality.

Rooms:
blast to the past, we were lodged in suite 601 on the Givenchy spa side, everything was circa early 1990's time for a serious change, crown moldings were detaching themselves from the ceiling, stains on carpet and furniture. NO internet connection in room, contrary to what was advised.

Dining:
we were refused our wine pairing when requested even though I was advised by e-mail that we could do so for an extra $50 p.p..
Extreme heat in the dining room, so much so that the granita was served to us in liquid form.
The waitress did not know that difference between, a mollusk, a fish or a crustacean. No very helpful when one has food allergies. Silverware was either missing, or broken. White wine was served warm on the terrace. Dust and dirt on the wine buckets at the tables.

buffet Breakfast: Everything was cold, the eggs, the sausages, the pancakes. No cream for coffee, sorry madame! and my plate was removed while I was in the process of eating. Thank you very much Sylvain.

A Mrs. Schneider, from the Hotel, contacted me to say, get this: Sorry we are under renovations and restructuring. Sorry for the inconvenience we hope you come back again.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

This place did not live up to the expectations set by the website. There is little to do - the spa is ancient and the room is small and cramped. Very outdated and not at all up to Relais and Chateux standards.

So it was a few years ago, but a place like this will always be wonderful I believe.
I was married here 5 years ago and I couldn't have imagined a more perfect location.
The grounds are beautiful, the staff exceptional and the food and rooms are so terrific!
I hope to return next summer and relive all the wonderful times we had there. Aside from being married there, we also dined there often when we lived in MTL.
Almost all of our family and friends stayed at the inn and they were all delighted. If you're looking for an intimate and romantic place to say your vows or just get away for the weekend...this really is a fabulous place!!

Answer from
Montreal, Canada
