We went to the National Park of Mont Megantic and had a meal at Haut Bois Dormant. It was honest and well prepared food, very tasty and we enjoyed the experience very much. For appetizer we had a shared charcuterie board with homemade sausages, arugula salad and homemade compote. For main, it was a melt in your mouth lamb stew, with butternut squash puree, some pickled cherry tomatoes without skin that was absolutely delicious, some other veggies. Just the color of the plate was a feast to the eyes, and the food itself so good that it's a feast for the tummy. (portion not huge tho). Dessert was simple sponge or apple cake in a ramekin, and with some sorbet I think. Simple but delicious. We did not stay in the hotel but the food was definitively worth repeating. The service was friendly and attentive. We had a great time.…
Julie really puts her heart into her B&B. The house is quaint and cozy, with a comfy lounge area and dining room. There is also a nice deck overlooking their spacious green lawn that is great for kids to run around on. The rooms are tastefully decorated, and share a bathroom on the landing. They might be a bit cramped for a family with two children. Our daughter had a mattress on the floor, which was comfortable. The best thing about HBD is the food. I highly recommend you go for half-board, breakfast and dinner. The fare is sophisticated and imaginative, with good quality locally sourced ingredients. There is lots to do in the area: hiking, star gazing at the Mont Mégantic Observatory, both in summer and winter.
This is a B&B style accommodation not a hotel. This was exactly what we had hoped for and more - lovely place tucked into the mountains, wonderful hosts & even better food - booking the dinner w/ room is a must. Great scenery and lots of opportunities for sight-seeing!
Great food, very friendly. Notre Dame des Bois has several good restaurants to choose from; this was one of the better ones
Julie and Pascal run this quaint B&B very close to Mont Megantic and the Astrolab. It is also conveniently located to Lac Megantic and about an hour from Parc Frontenac. It is a place to get very far away from the city. As mentioned in other reviews, Julie is an amazing chef. Breakfast was a wonder each day (we stayed for 10 days). The table d'hote was as good as any 4-star restaurant with the ambiance of a dinner with friends. The flavors are unique and very well blended. Julie has an amazing garden tended to by her and her mother. Pascal has coffee available early early each morning. The view is stunning--I write this from a "viewing room" at the front of the house with an exceptional view of Mont Megantic. We did several day trips and our hosts provided very helpful tips on the best travel routes, good restaurants, and visiting local places that were "off the beaten path," which we very much enjoy. For those of us from the United States, there are a few things to be aware of for B&Bs in this area. As with almost all older B&Bs, the rooms are cozy (the house is over 100 years old and big rooms take a lot of heat). Bathrooms are shared. There is no A/C here, others have window units. The nearest laundromat is about 5 km away (pack light). And being from Texas, the area can be quite chilly at night- pack layers. Bring your winter coat for Astrolab tours at night (in July-August). The house is on a main road with some traffic noise (mostly logging trucks); bring earplugs if this is an issue. Having slept through both Rush Limbaugh and the 1812 overture, I passed on the plugs. This helpful hints in no way detracted from this B&B. The hosts both speak English-Julie is fluent, Pascal won't starve in Lubbock, TX. It's great for charm and comfort with mountain-hiking, canoeing/kayaking, climbing between trees, a local granite museum, and day trips for wineries, shopping, and nearby music festivals.…
The house is clean and comfortable, with a stunning view on Mont-Megantic national park, both from the different (very pleasant) patios and from inside the house (and also probably from two of the rooms). Superb flowers and greenery around the house add to the view and the charm of the place. Rooms are nicely decorated in a simple, modern style (not at all the old tacky style that can unfortunately often be found of Québec B&B's). The shared bathroom is clean and practical. The park is only a few minutes away, so the place is an ideal base if you plan to visit / hike the park and visit the observatory. The house is located on the main road, but it is not busy at all at night. if you stay there, make sure to try the evening table d'hôte. Julie (co-owner) is cooking top quality local products and vegetables from the garden, and the lamb from the nearby farm was one of the best we ever had.…
went there with my bestfriend for a little weekend roadtrip, and it was perfect for us! The owners are very welcoming and kind, they make us feel at home, and they let us our space. The rooms are super clean and nice, they give you towles and a little handmade soap. There's a nice big living room on the middle floor, with full of games and a fireplace. Very beautiful place, peaceful! The foooood.... was so delicious, i mean were not difficult people but we found it very "exotic" and original. We just had breakfast and the served you a little appetizer and then we had pancakes but with nuts inside and all kind of different homemade jams, miam! Try out their coffee lattes, they dont charge extra fees and theyre yummy!! The town is kinda "dead" theres not much to do around, so i highly recommend to take the night excursion, you can book at this b&b, really cheap and very cool activity! We went and their werent any stars unfortunately but you still learn so much about the astronomy! Bring warm clothes even if summer, at night youre freezing, so coats, hat, hot pants, all of it!! Hope you guys have a great time over there like we did :)…
Julie makes you feel very welcome. We planned to hike and needed to be at the trailhead very early and she made sure we had a scrumptious breakfast before we left. The house is tastefully decorated and comfortable.
Located close to the Canada/US border, this exceptional B and B should be on the radar for savvy travellers. Julie and Pascal are great hosts, and the food is truly exceptional. We were privileged to spend three nights here, with two dinners. Julie seeks out wonderful local ingredients, and prepares them with love and a magic touch that shows cooking is in her bones. In fact, some of the ingredients come from her own garden, managed by her mother. In addition, Julie shared some good ideas for how to spend our time while in the area, and luckily for us, the Grand Tour du Lac Megantic was on the weekend that we visited, so we extended our stay by a night, and enjoyed an unforgettable day riding with hundreds of other happy cyclists around beautiful Lac Megantic. A fabulous dinner of duck confit prepared by Julie capped an excellent day, and because we spent much of the day bike riding, it was relatively guilt-free! On one night, we visited the nearby Astrolab, another enjoyable experience that we also review on Tripadvisor. Finally, for hikers, it should be noted that some very rewarding trails are located about 15 minutes drive from Haut Bois Dormant.…
Our stay was last year in January. there was snow on the ground but we were received so warmly. The food and hospitality were something special! Lovely little town, highly recommended and I am a professional travel writer! Nearby Mt. Megantic with it's nighttime snow shoeing trail and stargazing is a dream.
