I am the new owner of the Bear on the Lake and I am for sure running it as a hostel. Looking forward to my first season opening on May 1st. The only changes are hopefully positive ones as we have been busy with renos. We are already half booked up with lots of exciting new guests to meet... hope...

Stayed for a little over a week to catch some of the magic that is Celtic Colours and to experience Cape Breton. The staff, Megan and Kathryn went out of their way to make sure everyone had a great stay and were always up for sharing adventures on their days off! The hostel itself has a large communal space and...

This hostel is superb, the staff are extremely friendly and fun. It felt more like a family of different cultures and people coming together to hang out. The facilities are well maintained, good clean toilets and bedrooms. Wifi was a little bit Wonky probably due to the freak storm that came on the night I was staying. Just a really...

We stayed in one of their Private Rooms. Our room was on the 2nd floor. We shared the bathroom, a lounge area & deck with wood chairs with a second room on the 2nd floor. Our room was very small. The room included a Queen Bed, small table, wall shelf, desk lamp and over head light. The view from the...

tl;dr if you're wondering why you should stop at a small hostel along the highway between two small towns just trust me and go there for a few days A lot has been written already so I'll try to make it short. It's obviously on the way between the Newfoundland ferry and Halifax so it's ideal for a stopover. The...

This hostel is beautiful and the location could not be more idyllic. Rooms, bathrooms and communal spaces are all very clean and well maintained. Only complaint about the hostel would be the seemingly rigid and inexplicably late check in time of 4pm. We turned up at 2pm at the same time as another couple and were told that we would...

This hostel was very clean, the staff were friendly, and the kitchen/lounge areas were very spacious. The hostel only has a few rooms but it very cute in it's own way. It offers great views as well a very at-home feel.

I have travelled around the east coast of Canada a number of times, and I've stayed at Bear on the Lake every time I've been out that way in the last few years. Absolutely fantastic. Not only is it one of the safest, cleanest, and most enjoyable hostels I've ever stayed at - it is also one of the main...

I've stayed at Bear on the Lake many times and do so for a reason - it's amazing!! There are several comfortable dorms and a few beautiful private rooms. The owner and staff are always friendly and welcoming and take pride in the business and in showing Cape Breton off. There's a large kitchen and common area as well as...

I stayed in one of the private rooms with my son and husband. The room was clean, bed super comfortable and the view from the deck is awesome. This is the perfect place if you want to socialize, relax and cook your own meal at night. The staff was lovely and very informative. Which I could have stayed longer!
