Visited Ranweli Holiday Village for our honeymoon August 2015. Lovely resort on the beach, with a great laid back and natural vibe. Staff very friendly at all times. Food was great, with good selection to choose from. Bungalow was amazing, well decorated with fantastic sea...More
We stayed here only one night after our arrival in Sri Lanka. The location of the hotel is very beautiful. The room was spacious and very well equipped. Nice swimming pool. The food is ok but not very special.
We are still here with a few days left of our 18 night stay. As you arrive through the gates of the hotel you are met by the ferry and the ferryman punts you across to the hotel. We are staying in room 142 which...More
Stayed here for almost three weeks, with a break in the middle to visit Trinco. Staff are really friendly and attentive, and nothing is too much trouble for them, even to the extent of brushing up fallen leaves outside our bungalow everyday. Huge choice of...More

Many other places that trips go to are even further away. We had a tour for a number of nights with a car and driver, but if you want to use Ranweli as a main base you could still go off for a one or two night tour and return to Ranweli after that (car and driver is the way to do it - the good hotels have driver accommodation, so you would not have to pay extra for that.
Colombo well worth a visit IMO and that is only an hour os so away from Ranweli and you could even use a train to get there, but would need a tuk tuk or something to get you to the train station.

We did this tour with Walker tours as recommended by the Virgin rep. I believe it was about £80 for the 2 of us including a couple of other stop offs. Ok Anthony offers the same trip slightly cheaper but we preferred to be in a nice air conditioned taxi rather than a minibus . We had our own personal guide ( Ask for Adrian he was brilliant) we also went to the temple of the tooth relic on the same day and our guide was to knowledgeable . Enjoy your trips
