Was in Kill Devil Hills this past weekend and stayed at the Outer Banks Inn. This is a smaller motel and is close to most everything, restaurants, shopping and the beach is about a 5 minute walk. It's an older place and has seen better day and could use a total makeover/update. That being said, the room I was in (209) was very clean. Bed was not to my liking, far to hard to be comfortable. Pillows and linens were ok. Water pressure could have been better but was adequate enough. TV was good and had plenty of channels, wifi on the other hand was spotty at best and had issues with connectivity. Walls are kind of thin and I could hear the people in the room next to me. Lastly, the owners (I believe they were the owners) were wonderful! So accommodating and friendly. Allowed me to check in about an hour early since my room was ready. All in all, for the price I paid, it was a pleasant stay and would consider staying again when in the area.

The best part of this place was seen in the lobby when you check in. The person at the desk was very helpful and great to deal with and that is where it ends. The room is nothing to talk about. The room needs upgrading and cleaning. There was no tissue no coffee, nothing..... Would not recommend. but fine for overnight ,,,

I got there shortly before 10 pm and was told if later than that I would have to call a number, so note it is not 24-hrs if arriving late. The reception was pleasant, there is free parking, and the common areas were clean. The room was clean and fairly quiet for being right off of the main highway.

Not only do they have a terrible cancellation policy (48 hours) they make no allowances for parties with a sudden health condition (change in my cancer situation.) Then when we showed up anyway, with the 3 people that we had booked TWO double beds for, all they had to give us was a king bed room, NOT what we had booked at all. This was after we had been charged 2 days before for said 2 double bed room, which was not available when we arrived, and which we needed. This place is terrible, the bed was horribly uncomfortable and no one slept on the mattress where you could feel the springs. DO NOT STAY HERE.

Checked in rm 103 and immediately found 2 bed bugs. We went out to the lobby, where the owners offered us another room, but we weren’t comfortable staying. They had no problem refunding us so we could go elsewhere. Apparently, the room had been treated the day before, and they still rented it out. The room also felt damp and smelled musty.

Luckily we only had to stay one night while our rental was getting prepared. We stayed in one of the king rooms, room was tiny, the fridge had hair in it, the shower was not anywhere close to clean, and the AC only half worked. This won’t be somewhere we intend to stay again.

One of the things we truly appreciate about the Outer Banks is its warm and friendly people. Our customer service experiences at eateries and businesses have all been pleasurable…with the exception of the Outer Banks Inn. It was a lone individual, but I had the unpleasant experience that was Emily both at check-in and check-out. I can say without reservation she is the crudest and most ill-mannered individual I have ever had the displeasure of meeting within a hospitality industry environment.

We arrived at the OBI after six hours on the road. There was no return greeting, no eye contact, no smile-- simply a curt, ‘may I help you?’ We were informed we were moved to another floor. When one does not make eye contact it most often means either one is painfully shy or lying. I questioned her explanation. In response she became sarcastic and raised her voice. How mature.

Next, the machine to activate the room keys was evidently malfunctioning as Emily was unable to provide us with a set of keys. Her response was, ‘Well, the room guarantee does not begin until 4 o’clock.’ It was 3:45. As other patrons begin to fill the lobby a stressed Emily phoned her general manager and began yelling at him. In front of all of us. Very professional. She was a basket case.

The general manager eventually arrived at the facility and the keys were eventually made. We spent over an hour in the lobby. No offer of some water or the use of a restroom. No communication whatsoever. We were ignored. Gee, Emily, what happened to the 4 o’clock room guarantee?

Everyone has a bad day. Two bad days, and, well, maybe you’re not cut out for the hospitality industry. Her demeanor at check-out was the same as at our initial encounter. No eye contact, no North Carolina ‘friendly’. We had a wonderful time at the Outer Banks despite her rude and sour disposition. The hotel is in a good location, a short walk to the Atlantic, but I would avoid the Outer Banks Inn to ensure an overall pleasant experience.

The Outer Banks is certainly known for warm and friendly people which is part of many things that make our beautiful area so unique. I first want to say that I sincerely apologize for the experience you encountered with a staff member. We are known for excellent customer service and this situation is certainly atypical. I remember that situation specifically as our key machine went down and everyone had to wait until I was able to get the company to help me fix the problem. You certainly should have received better service especially when something inconvenient such as that occurs. Emily did decide to leave the hospitality industry recently and is no longer employed by our establishments. It is not my nature to make excuses. It is my sincere hope that you will consider staying with us again and I personally guarantee you will be well taken care of. Thank you for your honest feedback and again my sincerest apologies.

Im not one for bad reviews but this place was not the best. I understand that the Outer Banks are not known for their hotels or motels but more for the beach house, however this place calls itself boutique. Far from it. The property was nice and located within walking distance to the beach and some good spots for entertainment. It was in the same parking lot as a world food store and a surf shop was on the other side. Across the highway was Kill Devil Custard which was pretty good. Back to the hotel. We stayed in Room 210. First thing i noticed upon check in was the over bearing air freshener used by housekeeping. It just wasnt a pleasing smell. Not awful but not great. Oh and the kind of smell thst sticks to your clotes and pillows. Second thing were the patches to the popcorn ceiling. Just unappealing. I understand its busy season but if you had time to replaster it, then repopcorn it. The rug was a mess. Cigarette burns and stains everywhere. The table was shaky and we couldnt put anything on it. Bathroom was the worst. The toilet seat was half busted, the bath spigot was loose , the door jam was rusty, the tub would not drain, the sink spigot was barely over the sink and the mirror was ready to fall off the wall and last but not least. The towels, terribly thin. It was a sad bathroom. This room was also very noisey, i heard every conversating in the hallway and every time the people upstairs moved. It was annoying.

Now for the good stuff. The employees are all very nice, there is a good bar around the corner and they have the beach buggy.

I guess I wouldnt be so mad if they didnt call themselves a boutique hotel. It was not. I say stay at your own risk, not that anything was so terrible but i would probably spend a little more and stay at the Holiday Inn up the road. I just cant get over the bathroom and a carpet i couldnt walk on without shoes because the thought of the hard pieces of burnt carpet on my feet would make me want to scream.

Brian - I appreciate your feedback and apologize for the issues you seemed to encounter. The only air freshener we use is Febreeze however if too much was sprayed I do apologize. We have started working on the ceilings and will be re texturing them all to a more modern "knock-down" feel. I also apologize the bathroom was not satisfactory. I will certainly speak with housekeeping and ensure only freshest terry is in each room. We will also be replacing the carpet in this room as I agree that is unsatisfactory. Thank you for the kind words with regard to our staff. I do hope you would consider staying with us again in the future as we work hard to improve each day.

Extremely kind day staff, very professional and friendly. Evening manager was highly unprofessional. Knocked on our room door after 10pm to ask about a previous vacationer. Very bizarre. Room smelled like urine. Breakfast selection very poor. Hot water not hot at all! Pool is excellent. Lobby area pretty. Close to everything.
