Great slice of history from the time of logging and forestry in SW Australia Lots of tame wildlife, especially kangaroos, emus and birds which you can hand feed A village store and coffee shop selling a wide range of basic food and snacks as well as crafts and a bit of a museum with photos Very tranquil and peaceful

This place is heaven on a stick and we love it. We stayed at cabin 4 which needs a little bit of love and it is pretty small. We would like say, more than one wine glass and for a set of tongs for the BBQ. Our friends had other cabins that were much better. The vinyl in our cabin...

Thanks for the constructive feedback Ross. We agree, you need at least as many glasses as beds and we normally check each time to make sure that is the case. The owner of cottage 4 is planning some much need improvements that includes replacing the kitchen cabinets and flooring. Because the village is heritage listed, we want to keep the...

A stay here takes you back to the 50s and 60s- a wood hut, no TV, no phone coverage and dozens of very friendly kangaroos and emus! But also great tennis courts, flying fox, tv room for kids with pool table, original school now used for table tennis, basket ball courts, dam to swim in, great hiking trails and take...

Great place, been down there for last few years for a full week with immediate and extended family. Bit disappointed prices for this year have risen 20% from last year but still represents value. I hope the extra money is ploughed into upkeep of the place and ... keeping the firewood dry!

Thanks for your review and great to see you back here with your family. We like to offer good value holidays and have kept price increases to around 2.5% over the last couple of years despite rising costs - we're spending more on quality firewood! Your experience with prices might have been due to switching from off-peak to peak times,...

I have stayed at Donnelly River village around 20 times over the last 10-12 years and have for the most part enjoyed every visit. We are about to again visit after New Year after my 17 year old son requested it. I have read many comments from many people, some good a few not so good and I thought that...

Thanks for the feedback - and thanks for the 20 visits! We love how people keep coming back. On the subject of drinking water, we treat the water to make sure it's safe to drink, and we have it tested regularly, but those processes unfortunately don't remove the slight discolouring caused by tannin which some people find off-putting. And I...

What a wonderful place to get away from it all! Including the Internet! Ha ha. So many more things to keep you occupied here than just playing on your phone. The emus, kangaroos and prolific bird life are wonderful to watch. There is a pool table where you can shoot some pool (no charge), or play one of the many...

On the invitation of friends/part-time managers my wife and I enjoyed a mid week break at Donnelly River Village. We haven't been back since holidaying with our children many years ago and it was a real treat to re-live those times. We love the old cottages you get to stay in, the long walks in the bush and the evening...

Glad you had a great time here at Donnelly - and got to explore this amazing region. The boat trip down the Donnelly River estuary is definitely worth doing, as is popping in to all the wineries on the way back to the village.

Great place to stay for the kids as they get to feed both the emus and kangaroos - which ours loved! The accommodation is basic. We stayed in a house with 3 bedrooms and my room was freezing!! There were enormous gaps under the windows and doors - but if you're prepared them you can take something to stuff in...

Thanks for the honest feedback. We have been trying to progressively make the heritage listed workers cottages better insulated and more comfortable but without changing the appearance to much. Some of the sleepouts still get pretty chilly but the wood fires are all new now and working well. Also, we can provide electric blankets on request.

Fantastic place to get away from it all and have an old fashioned holiday. Sure there aren't any mod cons like phone reception, the internet or even tv and the accommodation can be cold but what you do get is open fires, peace and quiet, a safe environment for the kids and more wildlife then you can poke a stick...

Glad you had such a great time. We agree that its a great base where you can explore from. On the way to the south coast you have all the wineries and food-bowl farms around Manjimup and the charm of Pemberton. If the west coast is beckoning, a visit to Nannup is a must as well as a swim at...

We have been here a few times. Each time it has been amazing. Bike rides, canoes on the lake. It use to be an old timber mill town. The Mill has not been used for years. The cottages are all made of Timber with log fires. There use to be rabbits and kangaroos around at dusk and in the mornings....

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Donnelly River Village is a step back in time before technology took over our lives. Set in the middle of the towering Karri forest, we have 36 self-contained rustic timber workers cottages with wood fires and verandahs overlooking the trees. Native wildlife lives in the village and it is a great place to bring overseas visitors to see kangaroos and emus, in the flesh! Kids can run free to explore the forest, ride bikes and visit the General Store to buy their lollies. We can host functions and conferences in our old Workers Club and many couples choose Donnelly River for their 'destination wedding' where family and friends can gather for a couple of days of catching up again and celebrating their special day in their own special way. ... more   less

“Bring your own drinking water is my suggestion, Coles/Woolies sell 15L containers for $5.00. It save's the Town supply and if you are expecting the same quality as in the city, you may be disappointed (it IS the town supply from the dam after all. ;) Bring plenty of coins as you are going to want to keep feeding the animals. Bikes are for hire, but are pretty much 2 sizes, kiddy and adult. Although it is Donnelly River, at this time of year it is dry. Smoke detectors work brilliantly in the chalet, open up your windows and doors before you stoke the fireplace ;) Be selective with your chalet, there are plenty different options. Showers in bath ones are not the best for the elderly or frail. Keep an eye out for the Saturday afternoon wine tasting at the General Store on Saturdays.”
