A Unique experience awaits at the Tembo House&Apartments.Tembo House Hotel&Apartments is situated at the heart of Zanzibar Stone Town by the picturesque seafront. The magnificent main Building has had various functions over the past centuries. Between 1834 and 1884 it served as the American Consulate in Zanzibar then passed on to become the trading offices of Cowasjee Dinshaw & Partners. Their headquarters was in Aden(what now is know as the Port of Suez), and with trading posts notably in most of the British Protectorate areas, it became the largest trading Company in the India Ocean. To this day , the name of Cowasjee Dinwash & Partners is still visible at the main entrance of Tembo House Hotel.Tembo House Hotel has seen a few celebrities pass through is doors during the consulate era, the Conwasjee Dinwash era and as a Hotel. Mahatma Ghandi, stayed here a few weeks with the Dinwash family on his journey back to India from South Africa 1930. As a rising new star in the British, and the world music scene, Freddie Mercury and his family used to retreat to what is now ”Marashi” apartment whenever they came back to Zanzibar on holidays.Next to Tembo House Hotel is also what used to be the British Consulate, where in 1874, Dr. Livingstone’s body was brought before embarking on its long journey back to England.A stone throw away is the Beit-al-Ajaib of House of wonders. This landmark building, is the largest and by far, the tallest building in Stone Town. Flanking the Beit-al-Ajaib is the Old Fort on one side and the Palace Museum on the other side.In other words, Tembo House Hotel is situated on a prime location, you need not go far to find the shops, the restaurants and the Historical sites that Zanzibar Stone Town has on offer.Zanzibar port is just 5 minutes drive away and the Zanzibar International Airport a further 15 minutes away.Welcome home away from home

Stayed in Tembo hotel for 12 days, so we got a pretty accurate picture of how everything works. We reserved a room in the annex building, which has huge and spacious rooms, the two of us got 3 large double beds. The annex building has no elevator and no balconies in the rooms. Since the rooms are large, the air conditioning is not enough for the high heat in Africa during Spring. They also have two fans in the ceiling. I think it is impossible to be inside the room in Summer! The bad things are: The worst thing about the hotel is that it is impossible to use the beach, and the hotel is right on the beach! You will NOT BE ABLE to use sunbeds on the beach, and also it is impossible to swim in the ocean because someone is constantly approaching and offering excursions and selling something. SELLERS WILL HARASS YOU EVERY SINGLE MINUTE! Plus there is no one in a swimsuit on the beach and everyone stares at you when you go out in a bikini. There are boats in the water which makes it more challenging and you have to be careful not to get hit by one while you are swimming. Room bed linen was not changed when we arrived (it stayed from previous guests), after 4 days they were dirty and we asked housekeeping to change them. There is no air conditioning anywhere in the hotel building, only fans. The WiFi password is supposed to change every three days, but the reality is that it only works for one day, so keep in mind to ask for an additional password because at night your WiFi will stop working and you will need to use another password to login. Reconstruction is being done next to the annex and next to the main building of the hotel. Be aware that there will be noise. The employees at the reception desk will try to sell you day trips all the time, it was very annoying! I had an accident, I fell by the pool because the floor is wet and very slippery, and I hurt my arm. A man in a shirt came to the pool and asked me some pretty weird questions, like if I could move my shoulders, etc. and when I asked him why he was interested in all this, he told me that he was the manager of the hotel and that's why he was asking about my hand. VERY STRANGE BEHAVIOR from a manager, he should have introduced himself first! And why would someone who knows nothing about medicine ask medical questions? Good things are: The annex has its own pool, a billiard table and table football. The breakfast buffet is abundant, but keep in mind that there is no cheese, salami nor butter (just margarine). The location is very central and close to everything, you don't have to pay for taxi at all.

Tembo House Hotel located in Stone Town beachfront. A beautiful historic hotel with touch of middle eastern design style. The hotel has one swimming pool on ground level and another pool on 1st floor. The restaurant is facing the beach. So wonderful and relaxing to have breakfast and dinner facing sea. We had a sunset walk on the beach before dinner. Breakfast is buffet styled with so many choices of local and continental spread. One of the best breakfast choices we had in Tanzania. Dinner is ala carte.  Food is good. Our Double bedroom feature a king size bed with sea & pool view from balcony. Also a big hamman bath with hot & cold The hotel is just 2min walk to Freddie Mercury Museum, shopping alleys and cafe. Best location. Said Rashid arranged an early morning light breakfast at 5.30am for us as we had to take the 7am ferry to Dar es Salaam. Thank god we had light breakfast as the ferry ride was not smooth. We like to thanks Said Rashid, Abdul Aziz Hassan,  Ishak and all the rest of the staffs in Tembo House for showing us the warm and great Zanzibar hospitality. We surely recommend this hotel.

We stayed 1 night, rooms are nice, bed is terrific and we had a nice balcony. It's right off the beach and central in stone town so everything is within walking distance. Food is ok, breakfast was nice. They don't serve alcohol but you can go next door to the livingstone and get beer for the beach or your room. Staff is very helpful.

Tembo Hotel is really good, location is at beachfront so you can practically have breakfast at the beach. Service is also amazing and rooms are clean, full of historical furniture including beds, windows, bathroom tiles, etc. It has three pools and it's not very crowded.

All i can say is just that you feel at home when you are in Tembo hotel and apartments. It’s the staff and the services that make you feel at home. My partner and i just wanna thank Mr. Rahim and Jaffer, hotel management for welcoming us to their beautiful environment and assisting with all our exploration tour of Zanzibar. I believe we visited all conners of Zanzibar. Not forgetting Our pancake guy Chef Ronald and his lady partner. Always smiling and energetic every morning, just happy and positive vibes all day. MR. Mahamoud our incredible waiter who engaged a-lot with us during breakfast and dinner. Mr. Said at the reception, very humble and has good memory with names. He always smiles and gives positive vibes. Mr Abdul our driver to and from the airport, very charming and helpful with information. Mr. Hassan with his great smiles and greetings every morning for breakfast, always anticipating when you need help. Your team is amazing and there was no dull day for us since we arrived. We felt so sad leaving and wishing we could stay more days and enjoy zanzibar kachori for breakfast🤤 and chapati with chicken nuggets 🤤 But we gonna come back for sure next year. Thank you Tembo hotel & apartments Team for having us. ❤️ Mohamed Mwenje and Mrs. Bernice.

Amazing stay! The hotel has a good location in stone town, close to everything. The breakfast was good as well for the price of the stay, and looks over the beach. The rooms can use some updating however they are very clean. The staff here are amazing! Everyone always has a smile on their face and are very helpful and attentive. Mohammed at the front desk was extremely helpful and patient with our million questions/requests had and always did it with a smile on his face (we we’re five girls in one room). He helped us book taxis/excursions and checked up on us throughout the day to see if we were okay which I found to be very hospitable. Thank you for all the amazing staff at Tembo!

We love the Tembo, and have stayed there a number of times over the last 20 years. It really is exceptional: beautiful historic building, spacious and clean rooms, friendly and super-helpful staff, fantastic buffet breakfast, own stretch of sandy beach, and ideal location - close to sights of Stone Town.

This was a trip I'd been saving for, for three years. This was a 30th Birthday trip to myself & the way things panned out, it quickly became a solo trip and my first one at that. So leaving the US to travel to a different country could easy be one of the scariest things ever to someone but for me, it was one of the best and most peaceful trips I've ever been on. Tembo Hotel was the second hotel I stayed out during my duration in Zanzibar and honestly I wish it were my only stay. My first hotel was very nice but it was a lot further away on more of a beach resort hotel type of place. Tembo was a beach, city & every good thing in between type of hotel. As soon as I arrived staff at the receptionist counter welcomed me and even offered complimentary Hibiscus juice (that I love). I was then told my room was upgraded free of charge to a bungalow suite on the beach named, "Bahari." I was so thankful and upon walking into my room I was blown away at the beauty, space, cleanliness, and the SHOWER!! That shower was something I'd never seen before in my life and is hard for me to describe the arcihitecture of it but WOW. The staff were some of the nicest people I'd ever meet from the older man named, "Salim" (I hope I spelled it correctly) he helped me bring my bags to the room and even one night accompanied me to the a few places down the street since I was by myself at night as a foreigner female. Mohammoud always greeted my from morning to evening with a warm beautiful smile and even was my server a few times, whose customer serve was top tier excellent. Mudrik was so helpful when it came to helping change the batteries in the safe in my bedroom. Adul was so kind, friendly every time I saw him. Raphael was literally a dream he and the older Salim. Raphael made me a nice refreshment drink and we had great conversations throughout my time there. The younger Salim was so nice and sweet as well and last but not least Makame was so helpful on my last day there.

Stayed here for 5 nights in October - I would recommend this place, cleaners were great, the breakfast was better than I expected (fresh waffles, pancakes, fresh fruit etc). You had beach views at breakfast, several pools to choose from, nice infinity pool on the roof with nice sunset views. It's really central to everything, my only niggle would be the air con was a little lacking. staff very attentive, place was clean, prices reasonable - Would recommend. One of the things I said like about this hotel was they came around in the afternoon to prep your Mozi nets and spray the room and nets to keep the annoying creatures at bay. Nice attentive touch that we didn't have elsewhere.

The place looked to have a ton of promise. The location is good. The ambiance was pretty good. But, got to the room and the AC was not working, the showers are built basically where the entire bathroom floor gets wet and the toilet. Very odd. You can’t get more than 2 300ml bottles of water per day without going to the restaurant. Very loud music playing until midnight. Called the front desk and they said it would stop at midnight. Woke up to kids running around and playing in the pool (which was the least of the issues I’ll admit). Breakfast was basically like the great migration, but with people. Completely unorganized. Good luck getting assistance with anything. I would not return here.
