A Unique experience awaits at the Tembo House&Apartments.Tembo House Hotel&Apartments is situated at the heart of Zanzibar Stone Town by the picturesque seafront. The magnificent main Building has had various functions over the past centuries. Between 1834 and 1884 it served as the American Consulate in Zanzibar then passed on to become the trading offices of Cowasjee Dinshaw & Partners. Their headquarters was in Aden(what now is know as the Port of Suez), and with trading posts notably in most of the British Protectorate areas, it became the largest trading Company in the India Ocean. To this day , the name of Cowasjee Dinwash & Partners is still visible at the main entrance of Tembo House Hotel.Tembo House Hotel has seen a few celebrities pass through is doors during the consulate era, the Conwasjee Dinwash era and as a Hotel. Mahatma Ghandi, stayed here a few weeks with the Dinwash family on his journey back to India from South Africa 1930. As a rising new star in the British, and the world music scene, Freddie Mercury and his family used to retreat to what is now ”Marashi” apartment whenever they came back to Zanzibar on holidays.Next to Tembo House Hotel is also what used to be the British Consulate, where in 1874, Dr. Livingstone’s body was brought before embarking on its long journey back to England.A stone throw away is the Beit-al-Ajaib of House of wonders. This landmark building, is the largest and by far, the tallest building in Stone Town. Flanking the Beit-al-Ajaib is the Old Fort on one side and the Palace Museum on the other side.In other words, Tembo House Hotel is situated on a prime location, you need not go far to find the shops, the restaurants and the Historical sites that Zanzibar Stone Town has on offer.Zanzibar port is just 5 minutes drive away and the Zanzibar International Airport a further 15 minutes away.Welcome home away from home

We arrived here around 1am from the airport in a taxi arranged by the hotel. The check in staff weren’t at all friendly, the boys who helped us with the luggage were more happy. They put us in a room across the road away from the main building, thankfully the boys were there to help as we had 6 flights of stairs to climb, so no good if of poor health or ability, as no lift. Also the building is accessible by anyone as there is no security door or anyone downstairs. Our room was nice and big, the bed was large but it had a fleecy blanket on it which felt neither clean or nice to the touch. But the main issue was the door, when closed it had a large visible gap to the other side, and it didn’t lock at first. Luckily we had a large chest in the room which we used as a barricade to keep it shut. The next day the housekeeper said it had to double locked, which would have been useful to know the night before. Breakfast is included, but a limited choice of just fruit, a small selection of cereal but not much else. There is an egg station where you can ask for an omelette or fried egg etc. There is nice view of the beach and boats from the breakfast area, and leads straight on to the sand, but the beach vendors are keen to approach you relentlessly with clothes, boat trips and many other things. The pool area is nice and is on the main walkway through to the reception and back to the other building. After going out the location is good for visiting Freddy mercury’s house which is just around the corner, and seeing some of the local streets with vendors selling the usual tourist stuff. We came back at lunchtime to have a drink and a snack, but they don’t sell alcohol here at all, so went next door to Hemingways which we had lunch and dinner. Overall it’s an ok place to stay, but am grateful we we only had two nights here.

Luggage stored in storage room while I went on a tour. Then came back to it being missing. Someone didn’t look at my NAME TAG and grabbed it for another person. The staff need to have a better system for identifying luggage. What about having the individual give a visual verify BEFORE removing luggage?! What a thought. This resulted in wasted time at this hotel. Had this not happened, the review would probably be a 5 star. The amenities are quite lovely with easy beach access.

This is such a cute hotel. The pool is nice and so is the view. The staff was incredible. The beds (we were in a room with two twin beds) are small but comfortable. There was a refrigerator in the room which was very helpful with keeping water cold. The balcony was lovely. I was able to sit outside several times to listen to the waves. The only issue we had was with the shower. There wasn’t a shower curtain or door so water got everywhere. Also the hot water only came out of the hand held shower head, not the one mounted to the wall. Besides that, everything else was cool. It’s in a good location. We were able to walk just about everywhere. I got the breakfast buffet one morning. It was ok but nothing special. A word of caution, we stayed on the top floor which was great for views but you have to climb several steep stairs cases to get to the room. If you have trouble with stairs, I would suggest asking for a room on the first floor. I don’t think there is an elevator. Overall I would recommend this hotel and would stay here again on future visits.

I spent a few days at Tembo Hotel more than 20 years ago, and it made my day to see that the hotel is the same as before! The location is perfect and the staff is lovely. Rooms are very clean and traditional in style. I think this is a proper Stone Town experience!

The hotel was clean and the staff were very nice. Our room was on the top floor and had a great view. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was nice with a spacious shower. There was a balcony with a table and chairs. The air conditioning worked well. The restaurant is right on the beach and has a large menu selection. They do not serve alcohol, but that was not a problem for us. There is a decent amount of choices for breakfast including omelets. The staff were very nice. Walking through Stone Town is easy from the hotel and licensed taxis are right out the door. There is a nearby park and other restaurants near by. There are multiple pools and everything is clean. They kept our baggage for us because we were not going to airport for quite sometime after checkout. They provide a fabulous room to take a shower after check out and are very accommodating. If the beach area had been just a bit bigger with more shaded seating on the beach I would have given the hotel 5 starts.

When we first got to the hotel we met a receptionist, that barely looked at us and seemed to have all the time in the world checking us in. Not the best start. In general the staff was not very friendly or serviceminded compared to all the other places we stayed in Tanzania. The room was really small, it could barely fit a double bed, and was located right under the stairs, which meant a lot of noise in the room. The food was not good. The hotel is located right by the ocean, which is nice, but there is A LOT of people on the beach trying to sell you all sorts of stuff and unfortunately the hotel staff does nothing to keep the people from yelling to and annoying their guests while staying at hotel property.

What a beautiful, attentive, relaxing, friendly and atmospheric hotel. The pictures don’t do this place justice. The architecture seems true to Zanzibar, they use a lot of wood and natural materials. The rooms are spacious, the bathroom is like a Turkish hamam. The staff is friendly, attentive and helpful. Breakfast is excellent! The beach in front of the hotel is not so much for swimming, but it has the best evening atmosphere with locals playing football and just enjoying their Zanzibar. Abdulaziz, the manager, is super helpful with tips and guidance - always friendly, calm and available.

When I arrived at the hotel, I did not get the room that was depicted on Hotels bookingsite, which was very disappointing. As I had really been looking forward to these last 2 days of my 7-week trip through East Africa and it was the most I have ever payed for a hotelroom. According to receptionstaff at hotel, they have several junior-suites (4 or 5) and can not show pictures of them all. And insisting the rooms are all alike, but that is not true at all. And the other rooms were booked for the first night. I got offered another room, on 1st floor, near a restaurant next door where I see big loudspeakers, which usually means big noise in the evenings. And room not at the same price as a suite. I then did agree to stay in the first room for 1 night.   Then it turns out that the AC in the room doesn't work as it should. So the rest of the first day I can't really enjoy my stay/my room. At least 5-6 people are in and out of my room trying to fix the AC, but can they can not. So when I come back to my room later that evenening, they were still working on it. And I got downgraded to their last free room, on the groundfloor at noisy pool, next to the gents toilets, and my toilet next to kitchen/staffroom, with no sleep-in in the morning. And this is not even close to the pricerange that i have payed for, a quiet topfloor suite with seaview, which is 175 US/night. The explanation from staff is, that the AC was not broken, but they don't get strong electricity on a regulary bases, which makes them slow. But the newer AC in my "reserve-room" did work just perfectly! Next day I talk to one of the managers at 9.45. I will get room next to mine, but they must first clean it. He says guest leaves 10. At 10.50 i check room 26. Door closed, no cleaners. I ask manager at reception if room is ready. He says he will get someone to check and them notify me. 11.15, still no room. They really didn't seem to prioritise this at all! Then finally 11.45, I get into the room. I told the staff, that I do want a full refund for my first day of stay, which i 170 US. On leavingday I get to talk to the manager of the hotel and he recognizes the problem and offers me 60US cash in hand as compensation, which I was not happy about at all. Not even near an acceptable compensation for the groundfloor room. But as I had to leave for the airport, I had accept this for the moment and planned to get in touch with Hotels after coming home to claim the rest of my refund. But that was not possible, not even when Hotels called the Tembo hotel. So very disappointing and I cannot really recommend this hotel, because of their way of handling this case!!

I booked the Tembo Palace Hotel thinking it would be a seperate hotel from Tembo House as nobody informed me that it is all part of teh same hotel and that the Tembo Palace reception is at the Tembo House reception. This is feedback to the hotel to improve on this so that tourists do not waste time searching for Tembo Palace reception which does not exist. The rooms in Tembo Palace hotel and large and relatively new. I had booked a room with 3 large beds. Breakfast by the sea is nice but lacks some items such as fresh juice as there are too many carbon heavy bread options. The reception area is too small for such a big hotel with such a high turn-over so most of the time there is congestion near the reception. The price of the hotel is very competetive but the daily tourism tax is relatively high at $5 per person as it is a 4 star hotel.
