Nice hotel with a good location in Stone Town. It is clean and has a friendly and helpful staff. A small nice pool area with a few sunbeds. The breakfast buffet was okay. A special and big thank to head housekeeper Sarah for helping us with a forgotten Ipad at the hotel.

Maru Maru is a lovely hotel in a great location, but the customer service at the front desk spoiled my first impression quite quickly. I had been booked to stay at the hotel by a company, and the hotel requested a deposit, which was paid. The person making the reservation requested they send us a link to make a final payment and they never sent it to the company. Upon my arrival, I needed to take an important call as I was there for business, and the receptionist would not let me check into the room until I had paid the balance for the entirety of my stay. I told her I was unfortunately in a rush to take a call, and to please allow me to do so in the hotel room and I can come back down in an hour to pay. She refused and said the hotel card won't work until I pay the full amount (really?). Upon trying to pay, she tells me the hotel only takes cash, or card payment at 3% extra charge. Going to withdraw cash outside the hotel would make me late for my meeting. I had to run and take my video call in a disruptive outdoor location because she could not accommodate me in my room for an hour without paying the full bill. Once I finished my call, I paid the full amount and she did not mention that a deposit had been paid in advance by the company. Had I not informed the company that I made the hotel payment on their behalf, I would not have known a deposit was paid, and hence I had to go back and request them to return the deposit since I paid in full. While I understand that hotels may have (albeit inconvenient) policies in place, please train your staff to try and be problem solvers, and be accommodative in a way that may make your guests feel helped when they need it. The check-in experience spoiled my interest in the place.

The hotel is located in one of the main streets in Stonetown, walk to all the shops and restaurants. The rooftop restaurant has an ok breakfast, but dinner menu and the view at night with the sunset is better. Some evenings with live music can be a bit noisy in the rooms and for dinner. The swimming pool is located at the rooftop by the restaurant so if you are shy to swim while people watch choose the early hours. Charming old style architecture with wooden staircases. Have stayed at Mau Mau 4 or 5 times and will return. The check out time can drag out so make sure youre not in a hurry.

We stumbled across this hotel, in the unrelenting heat to sit down and get a cold drink. Lo and behold, this beautiful boutique hotel had a rooftop bar with a swimming pool and incredible views. We swam, ate and had a few drinks. Will definitely book a night or two there when in Zanzibar again.

The hotel is situated near the Fordani Gardens and waterfront but not on the beach itself, although its a short walk to these as well as other parts of Stonetown. Rooms are spacious, with desk, large bed with mosquito netting, bathrobes and slippers, a desk and siting chair and two benches. The pool is on the roof; its not terribly large, although you can swim about 6-8 strokes across it each way. The terrace bar and restaurant are a treat - fabulous view, make sure to get there for sunset. (The plus is happy hour from 4-7) with very inexpensive drinks. I ate there twice and food was good both times. There is live music overnight, but the nights I was there it was a keyboardist and a singer. (I wasn't aware of any karaoke as mentioned by another reviewer , although you can hear the music from your room. Nut it ends at10P ). The staff was lovely, from a warm greeting on arrival the hotel, ladies cleaning the room and doing a turn-down service, and excellent service on the terrace. Would definitely stay here again. Oh, one other thing. I booked directly just by emailing the hotel and didn't need to pay until I arrived.

Maru Maru offers enterntainment every night. The rooms are not sound proof. Therefore a sleepless night is assured, as they play music loudly until very late in the night. Reception will reassure you that music will only play until 10.30 pm, but as I am lying here writing this review the music is still raving well past midnight even after several guests have requested kindly that the music's volume may be reduced slightly. If you think sleeping is important, this is probably not the hotel for you. Quite tricky to run a hotel and a night club simultaneously... It is a shame though cause in every other aspect I adore this hotel.

Great place to stay in the heart of stone town, walking distance to all the places of interest. Excellent breakfast and a good choice of food on the menuWe had dinner at the rooftop restaurant and all the dishes we ordered were delicious. The bar is well stocked and the price is reasonable. The room was basic but clean and the Wi-Fi was good. The staff are smart , polite and friendly and honest. In my haste to catch the ferry to Dar I left my camera and spectacles at the hotel. When I realized to my horror what I had done, I called them and to my great relief they confirmed that they had found the items and kept them in safe keeping. I was subsequently returned my items and thanked them profusely.

Lovely hotel in the heart of Stone Town. The rooftop restaurant, bar, and pool were a huge hit with us. In fact two of the staff were particular stand outs for me, Elizabeth and Joseph. After my first trip to the rooftop Joseph remembered my drink, that great Safari beer! I didn't even have to ask after that, Joseph kept me refreshed with a cold one always. All of the serving staff appeared very young to me (in their 20's?) but they were all extremely attentive to each of us. They never hesitated to answer our questions and give us recommendations that always turned out to be exactly what we were seeking. My complements to all the wait staff, the bartenders, the cooks, the housekeeping staff...everyone!
