Nestled between two mountains, Russell Brook Campground is situated next to the Forest Preserve Wilderness area and has its namesake waterway running through the facility. We camped here over a long Independence Day weekend and the weather was a mixture of warm sunny days with overnight thunderstorms and intermittent rain on one of the days. It is heavily wooded and the sites are a very generous size. We camped with two other families, so having adjoining sites (64, 65, & 66) gave us a lot of space to work with. The brook ran directly behind our sites providing nice cool air so on hot days, it was very pleasant to line up our chairs and watch the water rush by as we read and relaxed. The campground is very well maintained and some of the facilities looked to be brand new. They have a clean pool, large rec hall, a playground, two small fishing ponds with fountains, a laundry and a small camp store. The one facility issue we had was a lack of water pressure, to the point that some of us had to use the public bathhouse in order to shower. They bill themselves as family-friendly and that was absolutely true, as there were certainly a lot of kids present the weekend we were there. Strangely, there were not a lot of planned activities for them to do which was very surprising for a holiday weekend. They did have a duo performing live acoustic music on Sunday night, but nothing that would really appeal to the younger generation. The roads around the grounds are very rough with river rocks covering most of them. Wi-fi was nonexistent in the majority of the campground, and we were we unable to get radio, TV reception or even cell service! (We have AT&T.) We had to walk quite a distance toward the office in order to get or send texts and retrieve our email. We had an incident on our first morning breakfast where one of the benches on our picnic table suddenly collapsed (the leg had rusted through), sending two of our party to the ground, slightly injuring one of them. We contacted the office and although they quickly brought us a replacement table, we never received as much as an apology nor any expression of concern. “That has never happened before,” was the only comment from the woman at the office. We were a bit peeved about that. We observed that many of the tables on transient sites were in pretty rough shape. The rules on their web site state that absolutely NO glass bottles would be permitted in the campground and that only white or clear garbage bags would be allowed, NO BLACK BAGS. So we made the effort to go out and buy our beverages in cans and purchased clear bags from their office, but neither rule seemed to be enforced, as we saw many people walking around with glass bottles and the dumpster full of black bags. Security overall was pretty lax. We never saw management make a pass through our area, though they were really not needed as the campground was overall pretty quiet. Given all this, we would camp here again because our overall experience was mostly positive. Our recommendations would be to bring along a portable wi-fi hotspot if one is available to you and internet connectivity is important. Also, bring comfortable hiking boots for traversing the relatively rocky roads and games to keep your kids entertained while on your site.

If you want to see the beautiful waterfall that is in this area, here are the real directions to find it: Once you get on Morton Hill Road, you drive about 3 miles and look for a white sign that says :Seasonal Limited Use Highway". You make a left here as this is Russell Brook Road (there is no street sign). Yes, the road has some potholes but I have a small car and was able to do it. You drive maybe a quarter of a mile until you see a parking area on your right and a mapboard. Park here and start down the trail and go right. You will come to a nice footbridge. Walk across the bridge and take the very next narrow path on your right. It will be overgrown a bit but you can get through it and you will soon hear the falls. As I drove down this road I passed one of the campsites and they waved to me and had a cute dog with them. Beautiful area.

we have stayed at alot of campgrounds in the past, and Russell Brook is definitely our favorite! Our family loved camping here! they had tons of things for the kids to do! they had the best time of their lives when we stayed. the owners are very nice and everyone is friendly there. the sites are not too close to each other. its a big campsite and you wouldn't know it they way they have it spread out. its safe place for kids to play freely. the showers and bathrooms were clean, we had water and electric at site. we went on hikes, saw waterfalls, went fishing, relaxed. we met alot of great people there! i would recommend this campground to everyone! we will definitely be making this a family tradition!

I’ve been coming here for almost 20 years with my college buddies and wives! Great hiking trails. Awesome creek! Owners are terrific, making improvement every year. And also planning fun activities, like hay rides, wine & cheese nights, corn & keg, etc. There is a pool. And a decent recreation room with billiards, ping pong, some old arcade games. Close to the town of Roscoe. Trout town. Some campsites are close to each other, and some offer more privacy towards the back.

We just got back from Russell brook campsites . What a nice campground . We camped right next to the stream . It was wonderful !! Unzip your tent door & throw a line in the water that's how close we were . Didn't catch any fish but that's ok we had fun trying . The pool was great . Bathrooms clean . We will definitely be back !

We've stayed here many times over the years and keep coming back. Why? Because it's a great campground, all the usual amenities of course, yet the owners and staff always take that extra step to make sure your experience is memorable. Whether you are a transient camper, like us, or a seasonal resident your treated like family. The activities are various and always fun, especially for the youngsters. Check them out, I doubt you'll be disappointed.
