we were their a little early but they hurried and made our room ready it was a very nice room and the price was great the view was fantastic I WOULD STAY THERE AGAIN it was very quiet and when I want to go swimming next summer I will go there first
I've stayed at The Golden Gate several times and I'm never disappointed. The room is always clean and the staff is friendly. I recommend the second floor on the right hand side . View of the lake from the balcony :-) . In the summertime the beach is clean and pleasant for wading or a walk.
This is exactly what we were looking for - a mom & pop hotel. Joan the manager is a great host she was there to greet us and make us feel at home. I have traveled extensively and stayed at many 5 star hotels, but this place is unique. It is a total no frills place that does require some mitigation of expectations, yet if you are looking for atmosphere, a private beach and a good place to relax for a few days, you need to visit the Golden Gate.
44°42'55.52"N 73°26'42.38"W We went to Plattsburg to visit our son in law and his 35 foot Sailboat. Although the boat can sleep 4 easily (it has 2 cabins) we preferred the comfort and air conditioning of a Hotel room. We found just that at the Golden Gate. And to make things even better, all the rooms have a view of the lake. Be carefull, the motel reception closes at either 17:00 or 18:00. So get your key before hand if you plan on being a late arrival. The room we had, 71, is on the second floor. This is good because it means there are no children (or uncivil adults) above you to run and/or make noise. The air conditioning is a bit noisy but there is also a fan that is very quiet. The motel provides 2 comfortable chairs right outside the door for those who want to read while looking at the lake. On the side of the water is a sandy beach, private to the motel. The room we had was very comfortable, with a flat tv and plenty of storage space. The furniture appeared to be mahogany. It is very nice. Only a sad comment. The bath and sink should be resurfaced. Overall, a very nice room in a very nice location. We will return.…
So much for supporting the little guy! Next time we stay in Plattsburgh we'll stay at a chain hotel. The front desk clerk had to come and vacuum and edge the whole room because the floor was filthy. The tub was grimy and had hair in it, as was the base of the toilet, with a wad of Kleenex thrown behind the toilet. The ceiling fan paddles looked like they were growing fur,the a/c unit was coated with dust, the window sills disgusting, and every surface was dusty, see pic of my hand, that came off ONE end stand. The freezer was not usable, caked with ice and the door broken off. The fridge shelves were sticky and gross. If we didn't have appointments the next day, we probably wouldn't have stayed at all. $100 a night? Wasn't worth $20
Simple, no frills motel with a great location right on the beach. Cleanliness and price recommend it, though as others have mentioned, the office closing at 7 pm is a strange way to operate. At least they called early to make sure what time we were going to arrive, so there were no unpleasant surprises.
The room we clean and in nice shape . Great value for the money . The bonus is the great beach at the end of the parking lot . Joan and the staff are helpful and the bathroom was all new with a spa feel . Thanks , we'll be back
The location has so much potential. The rooms are nice but the "tenants" aren't. Seems like this motel is more like section 8 housing more than a vacation destination. It would be one thing if this motel catered to guests but it doesn't. I would agree with a fellow reviewer NOT to leave anything of value in your car or in the room just to be safe! Also each room has a glass window over the entry door. Granted no one can see in but the light from the outside lights can shine in. When a person is trying to sleep it can be annoying having bright lights in your face. Also, no peep hole to see who's outside. This motel does have potential and for the price it was good but I wouldn't go back. I like to feel safe and secure. Also the front desk closes at 7pm so if you're arriving late they leave the key in the room with the door unlocked. Not very security conscious. …
Great motel for a weekend visit during SUNY Plattsburgh Family Weekend. The price was too good to be true for lakeside accommodations. After reading some of the reviews we were definitely nervous going into this. But the only real drawback was that the rooms are a little small (although admittedly we have 4 people in a room really meant for 2). The place was very clean and the staff were quite friendly and polite. There is a McDonald's right next door so early risers can walk over for their coffee and bring it back to enjoy it on the beach (although there are coffee makers in the rooms as well). Would have no qualms about staying here again.
Stayed there this past weekend as we were in town for a funeral. Pros: Someone put a lot of money into renovations. Really liked the interior of the hotel. Nice flooring, cabinets, fixtures. The front desk worker was really nice :o) Cons: Despite Expedia guaranteeing my credit card would not be run until I physically checked in, my card was run before I even got there. That left a bad taste in my mouth when the front desk clerk was also surprised this was done when she said, "Oh...it seems my manager already charged your card." Another Con: Musty smell. No mistaking it - moldy or mildew. Also, all that money was put into construction...but a dingy, musty couch from the 70s? Refused to sit on it. Also, the area of town is really sketchy. We kept nothing in the car overnight for fear of theft; we kept nothing in the room during the day while we were out for fear of theft. We had no real problems...and again, interior was beautiful, but I wouldn't stay here again. Also an issue: The front desk closes at night? Odd.…
