I thought this hotel was charming. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The room was clean and spacious (though could use a little updating with regard to decor and bedding). It was quiet, comfortable and had a door leading out to a little porch outside. I would highly recommend staying at this motel.

We stayed in this motel last week and everything was just fine since we are not picky people but the smell was just awful. It must have been in their carpet. Other than that a very spacious room with a jacuzzi tub in it too. The smell was obvious after leaving the room and then returning to it. Very nice and private too. Hopefully they can tend to this problem. During our stay there were also septic issues but I believe they were fixing them fast.

I like this motel situated in the country. The room was large, nicely decorated, and has French doors leading out the back. Best of all the was a jacuzzi tub next to the bed! I watched TV while soaking. The staff was friendly. Definitely recommend.

August 29, 2005 - I wish I had seen reviews on this motel before we booked the cottage for 4 nights. The place was disgusting and there are no refunds. The web site describes this as beautifully furnished and well appointed in a country setting. That was an out right lie! The furniture was old and worn, smelled of must, the bathroom in the cottage had mold in the ceiling tiles. The cottage sits right on the town highway, so you have to run the AC even when its cool at night, just to drown out the CONSTANT highway noise. After I complained, they lowered the price by $30 a night…but even at the reduced $150/night, $170 with tax, it was still awful. We couldn't find another place with such short notice, so we were stuck. Thankfully we were able to move to Rhinebeck Beekman Arms after 4 nights. We did have the option to move to the single rooms, but they were no better. Stay away from the Cottonwood Motel!

We were coming from the Boston area for a friend's wedding. The directions provided brought us through the worst part of Hartford. It only got worse. The "non-smoking" room reeked of smoke which masked most of the mold smells. The non-matching furniture came from yard sales and most of it was partially non-functional. The bed was lumpy. The rugs were heavily stained (we dared not look at the matress). The hot-tub was gross. The windows had no screens, so we couldn't air out the room because of flying bugs. The service was surley when we tried using it (and mentioning the poor directions got us a nasty look). The complimentary coffee in the morning was gone before we woke up around 9am. My wife and I would have enjoyed staying in tent at a nearby campground more. The "landscaping" consists of mowing the lawn. The supposed view out the back would have decent if the back door had screens (lots of bugs from the pasture adjacent to the hotel property). The tiny, low-res pictures on the website should be a warning. The only picture of the building is perhaps the best view of the place - and it's from the highway. This was the worst accomodations I've ever paid for - and the price is a complete rip off. Just stay away.

Not wanting to shell out $400 a night for one of the local B&Bs, I opted for the Cottonwood knowing it wouldn't be luxurious but expecting a decent place to lay my head at night. Unfortunately, I found the experience to be extremely disappointing despite my low expectations... To begin with, the person I spoke with to book the reservation was terse and not very warm or welcoming. I felt as if I were intruding on her day. Upon arrival at the property and during my 2-day stay, I did not encounter a single staff member who didn't seem put-out, put-upon or downright rude. Most of the time, they seemed more concerned with sitting outside the front door smoking than taking care of their guests. My room smelled like damp, mold and stale cigarettes, and I had to get rid of 5 spiders before I could take a shower. The furniture was old and banged up, there were no closet doors, and the carpet was stained. The French doors didn't lock properly, there was no alarm clock, and the flimsy door locks provided no sense of security. All in all, not a fun experience and I certainly will not be back and will not be recommending the property. In fact, I suggested to the organization that brought me to the area that they remove the Cottonwood from their list of "recommended" hotels.

Upon approaching the Cottonwood Motel it appears to be rather quaint. Upon entering our room you just didn’t want to touch anything. It was a large room with two what looked like queen beds and we asked for a king. The rug was dirty, the chairs had stains, the bedspreads had stains and some bleached out stains and for some ungodly reason they put a small, dirty throw pillow on each bed. You didn’t even want to put your luggage on anything in the room.

There was a hot tub in the room and this looked clean and the bathroom looked clean but when you lifted up the toilet seat cover, there was a piece of the wood from the lid missing.

We went to check the double doors to the outside and the door only locked by one small little peg at the bottom of the doors. There were written instructions taped to the door on how to lock the door but no matter how many times you tried it wouldn’t work.

We checked out of there wasting no time!

We come to Millbrook frequently as we have family here and have always seen this motel, but always decided to stay in Poughkeepsie for a more familiar chain hotel, with amenities. For this trip we decided to give the Cottonwood a chance. Motel is clean and staff very friendly, which is what kept us there. Upon walking into lobby it smelled like an old damp basement. We thought that would be gone in our room, but it smelled of Lysol to cover up the smell, but didn't work. They rooms have keys instead of the electronic cards the rooms have these days. The room was good for one night, but for us not any longer than that. The beds have old comforters and blankets that we did not want to sleep with at night. Thankfully it was summer and we didn't need the extra warmth. There are two double doors to the room that led out to the back. They did not give us the feeling of having much safety as they are easily opened. The curtains did not cover the windows fully and anyone could have watched us sleep through the night as this is a one level motel with an open area right behind your room with easy access for anyone. No fence around back area. This made sleeping not very sound for us. The bathroom was clean and we had no complaints there. In the mornings they offer a pot of coffee and a pot of hot water for tea. WiFi is only available if your room is near the lobby as it does not stretch to all rooms and they only have about 10 rooms. We paid $140 for one night. Cottonwood charges these prices because they can as there is no competition in the area, but this room should be half that price. If the owner would invest in upgrading the property and remediating the damp smell they would have a nice property with more guests and they would be happy to pay these prices. For us, we will take the trip to Poughkeepsie for our future travels to Millbrook to get the amenities that are worth the $140 charge per night.

This is the second time I stayed at the Cottonwood, unfortunately the only place in Millbrook, NY. The rooms are large and they attempt to keep them clean, but some things are just not fixable.
I had hoped that there was some improvement from last year but for $185.00 a night I'd rather camp in a tent on the property.
Everything is just old, tired and in total disrepair. The paint and wallpaper are peeling, the bed sheet on our bed had a 5 in tear in it. The spreads are old and have been washed so much the cotton underside is gray not white.
None of the lights worked properly, we had to go request bulbs just to see. The bathroom light fixture on the ceiling was totally off exposing the "guts" of the ceiling. (found the actual fixture under the vanity) They provide no hair dryers, and the toilet seat was old and stained.
Overall, this place needs to be torn down and totally rebuilt. I won't go back!

I have nothing good to say about the Cottonwood. Mold/mildew issues; tired, beaten-up furnishings and carpet; stale air (it was a "non-smoking" room - could've fooled me); lots of traffic right outside...need I go on? Find someplace else to stay - even if it's your car.
