It was our anniversary weekend and we could not have asked for a more wonderful time at this very special inn. The food, the wine were all spectacular as were the people who created such a lovely dining experience. The inn is laid back, intimate and yet you still felt pampered the entire time. Adam, the manager, is a delight as is everyone involved in running this place. You will enjoy a meal of a lifetime and the joy present in the dining room in palpable. These are people who love what they do and they bring that joy to their cooking and to the incredible selections of wines. We cant wait to return and sample the spring tasting menu.
What was great: - Very nice (scenic) drive to the property - Staff was friendly - The restaurant is cozy (not as big as I thought) and has a very nice view - The property itself was very nice and the common living space was very cute and cozy - Welcome cookies + drinks - The thought behind the tasting menu - Breakfast items were tasty although beef fat hash brown was overcooked (we admit that it's on us for not asking for a new one) What could have been better: - Central heating made it very hot for us to sleep comfortably. You can open the windows but then you worry about being too cold overnight. - Wish the room was more functional. A bed takes up 80% of the room (note : we had classic queen, this may change if you get a bigger room) with very little room to put your things away - Was doing some work in the library and the music got killed (which I was enjoying very much, wish they checked before killing it) - Wish they could get the fireplace going regardless of people asking for it. To be fair, they asked if we wanted it and we did ask them to get the fireplace going but neither library or the restaurant had the fireplace on, which could have made the place cozier. - Pineapple in 3 ways from the tasting menu was over done. We expected more for a $225/pp menu (this is subjective) …
Food is Michelin Star quality, creative with outstanding service. The sommelier Conor Mullally is super star, with deep and interesting knowledge about wines from all over the world & his parings are simply the best (and I’ve been all over the world dinning at 5star restaurants). Connor and all the staff are particularly helpful and lovely all around. DeBruce is perfect for couples. It’s costly but knowing a portion of the proceeds go to get he local food bank to support those in need make it worthwhile.
We recently spent 2 nights at The Debruce. It's a wonderful place! It's remote (as many hotels are in this region) but the snowy drive was beautiful. Our room was a corner room on the third floor (no elevators) and was cosy, but with great views. The lounge areas are warm, lots of comfy tables, a roaring fire. We didn't have a drink in the bar downstairs but it looked great too. Our dinner the first night was a la carte and was delicious. Our second night coincided with the tasting menu and it was FABULOUS. Really delicious. I'd like to give a big shout out to John, who couldn't have been more charming or helpful - as were all the staff really. Livingston Manor is the nearest town and is very cute - a few cool shops and a heartily recommended lunch at The Walk In (aah, those biscuits). Would thoroughly recommend!…
My wife and really I enjoyed our "first weekend away" since before March 2020. The DeBruce was wonderful, with a tasteful collection of furnishings in the great room, reading room and bar of mixed leather couches, chairs and tables to allow reading, board games, or a place to cozy up next to the fire. No Tv's on the property including in rooms FYI. We started our trip the same way we ended it - lunch at The Walk In in Livingston Manor (a lovely walkable town a short drive from the hotel.) We checked in for our Friday to Sunday stay around 3:30pm into room 10 (Manor Suite), on the 3rd floor. There are 8 rooms total in the hotel I believe but a lot more doors in the hallways which I took to be because rooms were combined (like ours.) Narrow and noisy stairways weren't a problem during out stay- the hotel felt much larger likely because of the limited guest rooms compared to its size. Staff was all very pleasant (including Jonathan at the front desk.) There is a collection of board games, table top shuffleboard, indoor and outdoor fires. Hotel was very clean including rooms and bathrooms. Staff did not wear masks but we felt safe/protected/clean from a COVID lens. Downstairs bar was big enough to space out. They have recently allowed non-hotel guests to dine/drink on the property but we only noticed Friday night. Onto the Food and Drink.... Front Desk/Concierge/Host can always help with a drink from the bar before it opens at 5pm. Wide range of beer, wine, cocktails expertly prepared and easily charged to your room. You are contacted about reservations before your stay and we went with Friday night "Market Menu" at 7:30 PM and the tasting menu Saturday at 8pm. Friday night we were underwhelmed by dinner (you can pick 3 apps and 2 mains for 2 people) and we were not a fan of the wine recommended to us, however was quickly impressed by the savory and interesting breakfast options (pick 2 per person.) Although we didn't explore the option you can have dinner at another Foster Supply property as part of you stat at the DeBruce. The tasting menu experience was amazing. Printed menu plus off-menu add ons which overall is aimed at those willing to explore/be adventurous. If we were were told about the wine tasting add on we might have opted for it but oh well - still an unforgettable dinner. We had massages at Hemlock Spa at Kenoza Hall (30 minutes away) for Saturday morning. I wish we didn't book a 10am since Breakfast started at 9am at the DeBruce but it still worked out. The spa was lovely and Stephanie Ellis is an AMAZING massage therapist. Post massage we hung out in the outdoor/indoor lounge by the fireplace and used the outdoor sauna. Not many people were brave enough to use the cold plunge pool. Post-massage we went into the town of Callicoon and had lunch at Catskill Provisions while shopping and drinking out way around. For our final day we did 2 of the three marked hikes on the property, about 7 miles before heading home. Great stay in a quaint, rustic setting surrounded by beautiful landscapes and good people. If you're after a destination/get away weekend I'd recommend it we plan to be back in the spring/late summer to fish and use the pool.…
I don’t remember the last time I had to write such a mixed review, but here goes: The restaurant is outstanding. Hats off the chef, every single bite of everything we had was first class. The tasting menu is worth the trip here alone, so original and so tasty. All the waiters and waitresses were also amazing, professional and so friendly. When it comes to the hotel, unfortunately a whole different story. The place itself is cute and the grounds are stunning. However I would give it one star, only because of the service. Pretty much everyone seems disinterested in guests and is quite astonishingly unhelpful, so definitely a long way to go from a customer service point of view. Any question we had was met with blank stares and disinterested shrugs of the shoulders; the room was not made up once over the 2 days; coffee machine which is left on the reception desk in the morning ran out of milk with no one to refill; the tables on the porch on Monday day morning were not wiped and I had to chase someone down to ask if they can clear it before we can have breakfast outside. Also, the internet is very weak to non existent in the rooms so be warned. We struggled both days and nights with my husband spending quite a while trying to make things work and even manually resetting the repeater outside of our room while everyone at the front desk told us that is “just how things are in the Catskills”. Great shame to have such a disparity- superb restaurant attached to a quite poorly run and mediocre at best bed and breakfast. In summary, while we could not recommend the restaurant highly enough, we would not recommend staying at the hotel.…
My wife, daughter, and our little dog needed a quaint and sanctuary vacation from our daily lives of working in the city. We recently moved to the city from Honolulu, Hawaii and finding a beautiful space dedicated to celebrate our daughter's one year birthday was challenging to find but my wife discovered The Debruce. This oasis seemed a carbon copy of what Hawaii has to offer, friendly staff, fresh local ingredients, miniaml aesthetics, clean environment, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, and the Aloha Spirit! Did I forget to mention the VIEW! It's relaxing and necessary to the SOUL. Courtney was so kind and professional from the jump, she invited our small family with kindness and grace, made us feel welcomed throughout our stay, everything you could ask for she went above and beyond! The hospitality felt warm, authentic, and natural. The staff even took care of our daily pet fee. The entire staff from the bartender downstairs to our breakfast server was attentive, friendly, and our shared conversation was amazing! The compound was beautiful, the tasting menu was specular and much better than we have imagined. A hidden GEM! A must Stay for anyone looking to unplug from life for a few hours. Mahalo, Arigatoo, and Thank You So Much…
My wife and I needed a little vacation from our normal lives and after some research this hotel stood out. It's always been recommended to us by a close friend and we gave it a try for our 8th year wedding anniversary gift to ourselves. The drive up away from northern NJ was less than 2 hours. It's a straight shot up NY-17W and you start to see that the Catskill mountains are greeting you with their beautiful greenery and smooth windy roads. Follow your GPS on pristinely paved Debruce road and you'll see that it ends up at this beautiful hotel. After you park your car and enter the front doors you're greeted warmly by the concierge and are given your room key and given the lay of the land - pool/bar downstairs, dinner tasting at 9 (our scheduled time), we can choose to hike, go into town and explore or just hang out by the pool and wind down. The room we had on the 3rd floor had a very comfortable queen sized bed and a beautifully updated bathroom and that's it, no obscene sized TV which brings you back to your normal everyday routine, but there is good WIFI where you can keep connected to the world if you so choose. This is the type of room which encourages you to nap and recover whatever energy you spent whether it be trying the local cuisine in Livingston Manor or hiking the dozens of miles the trails offer all around the area, 5 of them being right in the backyard of the hotel. Dinner was a whole other experience. The chefs looked like a professional crew derived from Top Chef contestants. The dinner staff were extremely educated on the food being served and also the wine choices that were available. You can also opt to have the wine tasting with the food tasting where you get a technical description of the wines from the hotel sommelier. There were two pages listing 12 main courses (with sub-courses in some). My wife also had a specialized pescatarian menu just for her. We have never eaten that well, EVER. The whole experience blew us away and made our first night there already a memory/experience we will never forget and always treasure. After dinner you can retire to your room or roam the intimately lit grounds leading to a firepit where smore's creation kits are waiting. It's quiet, beautiful and serene back there. A perfect end to the night and a great introduction into the Debruce experience. Breakfast next day was delicious. Choice of two courses from the menu. The food was just as delicious as the night before. Professional takes on traditional dishes are always amazing. Ingredients are locally sourced and utilized by the chefs. Also another amazing way to start a day. We spent the whole day exploring Livingston Manor's breweries, bakeries, and restaurants. (Doing separate reviews on them) Dinner Sunday night was a little more traditional where we got to pick what we wanted to eat. Each dish, once again, a masterpiece of flavor. Not one dish disappointed. Monday mornings are the town and hotel's rest days and our check out day. The breakfast was a buffet style spread of, once again, even more delicious takes of traditional dishes. It's hard to leave good eats like this, but the fact that this place exists means that we can always come back when we need to unwind and recharge with full bellies and an extremely satisfied palette.…
Perfect place to get away and relax for a few days. During the daytime there are plenty of fairly low-key things to do...fish, swim, hike or just read a book. At night there is an incomparable dinner. Yes, the rooms are small but they are serviceable and tastefully decorated. Furthermore, the grounds and common areas are so inviting that you really shouldn't be spending too much time in your room. The staff excels in attentiveness and courtesy. This is a one-of-a-kind place.
Came here for two nights a few weeks ago and really enjoyed the getaway from NYC! Easy drive up and stayed from Thurs-Sat. It was the perfect amount of time and felt we were here longer than two nights. Pool wasn’t open before Memorial Day wknd but it was still relaxing to sit outside. This place sits on a great view of the Catskills and the service and food were excellent. The tasting menu was the highlight of the trip. Super impressed by the quality and execution. Everything tasted super fresh and the scallops, gelato, peas, chicken were standouts. The menu is seasonal and so tasty and innovative! Room was small but didn’t spend any time there except to sleep and shower. Breakfast also very good but they ran out of caviar so didn’t get to try the soft scrambled caviar dish. If you get the all inclusive w food they’re flexible on ordering more than what’s stated (ie for breakfast supposed to choose two things but if you asked for one more thing don’t think they’ll give you a hard time). Private hiking trails were nice but very buggy. They offer bug spray. At night there is a campfire where they give you a s’mores set to make if interested. Overall very relaxing escape from NYC and would definitely recommend a two night or one night stay. Staff was super friendly and helpful. …
