Beautiful location, and truly unique. Tough night trying to sleep though as it sounded like people above us were dropping heavy packs on floor till11pm , and then again at 4 pm. Loj needs to do more to enforce their quiet hours.

It is not within walking distance of Main Street. I believe its site says 8 miles from Lake Placid and it a goodly drive off the main road into the property (which of course makes it very private)

No it is in the woods just beside main hiking trails.

Dogs should be allowed as long as you are not staying in the lodge itself. Yet, as Ken T. suggests, i would confirm directly with ADK club which maintains the lodges.
