We spent three nights at the Degosach Eco Lodge and had a great time. It is about an hours drive from Lalibela with a 30 minute walk up the hill to get to the lodge.
The lodge is basic but comfortable. The views at both sunrise and sunset are simply spectacular and probably some of the best in Ethiopia.
Thanks to Molla, the guides and the local farmers for making our stay something we will never forget.
p.s don't forget to pack some warm clothes because it gets very cold at night!

We travelled as a couple and stayed at the Degosach Eco Lodge on our last night in Lalibela. We stayed for one night and chose Degosach to switch off and unwind after 3 days in Lalibela visiting the churches. We were also lucky to be the only guests at the lodge during our stay!
We booked the 4x4 and mule (for our bags) after booking. The scenic drive up was a mix of smooth surface and rocky road (an "African massage") but generally comfortable. The drive was about 40 minutes and we walked for about 30-35 minutes at a comfortable, leisurely pace to reach the lodge (including multiple breaks for photos and videos). Our guide Aragaw (aka Alex) hiked up with us to the lodge and with his good command of English, shared little nuggets of information with us along the way. At the lodge, he made sure we were well fed and comfortable.
The lodge's appeal is easy to understand. It may be just 22km from the town of Lalibela, but in attitude it’s a world away: discreet, quiet and laid-back - allowing the views of the mountain and sky to do the talking.
The tukul was clean, simple and sufficient. Most importantly, the bed was comfortable for a good night's rest and the twin combination of hot water bottle and heavy blankets did a spectacular job of keeping us warm at night. The lavatory was equipped with a toilet bowl and a full bucket of water for washing and flushing.
The 2 lovely girls did an outstanding job with our meals. We enjoyed the pasta for lunch (they got "al dente" right!), the injera for dinner and the delicious scrambled eggs for breakfast!
Highlights of our stay include the foot massage (warm water and strong hands are an incredible combination to soothe our tired feet), an evening of drums and dance with the locals, the coffee with a view, local wildlife (cows, donkeys, sheep) and the crisp, fresh mountain air.
We would recommend a stay at Degosach to get off the beaten (pilgrim) path, switch off, relax and unwind.

One should clarify that this Eco Lodge is not actually fully functional yet. There is no running water at this point. Also, it takes about an hour from the Lalibela Airport in a 4 x 4 vehicle and you will need to hike up to the lodge at the end, about a 30-50 minute hike depending on your fitness level. That being said, this was one of the highlights of my trip to Ethiopia! The views from the lodge are spectacular, it was beautifully quiet, and the stars were magnificent. In the evening, we had a lovely time sharing dinner with those who work there and had some traditional dancing as well.

I booked the hiking trip and stayed at the Eco Lodge as a single (female) traveler, assuming there would be other travelers to enjoy the fire, meals and traditional dances with. When I arrived (it's a 40-50 minute hike up the mountain, which is gorgeous) they told me I was the only guest. This doesn't need to be a problem, but it was little uncomfortable as the 5 local men who where there only spoke Amharic with each other. They were looking at me, seemingly making jokes to each other, which can be funny if you understand it, but uncomfortable when you don't (at least for me). There was one woman, who cooked food, which was nice and the view from the plateau was stunning. The overall experience was one-of-a-kid, but when you are traveling alone, you might want to confirm with the agency that there will be English speaking people, so you have a clou what they are talking about. The list of amenities mentions things that aren't there, like high-speed internet, bath/shower, free parking, horseback riding, etc. Please be advised that there is no electricity, running water or cellphone reception (let alone wifi). I didn't mind that, but I would have charged my devices and camera beforehand if I would have known.

I made a trip from 3 weeks in Ethiopia in November 2018. One of the highlights was the trekking i made near Lalibela and visiting the Degosach lodge. It was a tough three days walking and climbing but as a dream.Specially because i found the best guide of Ethiopia, Mr Zenabie. He was really perfect, knew so many things about the nature, the culture and the people, He was helpful and patient!! When you will make a trip to this region, ask for mr. Zenabie. it makes your fantastic trip far more interesting and wonderful.

Staying at Degosach was by far the best experience of our Ethiopian adventure. From the moment we arrived we were warmly welcomed and treated as part of the family. We were treated to dancing singing and local stories from the local people in the area. They prepared beautiful meals, made sure our coffee cups were never empty and gave us each had hot water bottles as we went to bed.(it gets cold at night!) The setting for the lodges is incredible and the views are breathtaking. It's a true paradise for anyone with a an adventurous spirit. The hike to and from the lodges are easy/medium difficulty and well worth every step. No wifi or electricity..but that's what we need sometimes, right?!
Our guide was Zanebe. I cant speak highly enough of him. He was young and energetic and very smart. We talked about all sorts of things and by the end of our 3 nights we had all become good friends. We could comfortably laugh and joke with each other and so we asked him to join us for dinners and nights out and other trips we wanted to do in the area. He was extremely helpful and generally a great guy to spend time with. I wish him all the best in future adventures and highly highly reccomend him. Please ask for him to be your guide. You wont regret it.

The staff and our guides were amazing, accomodation is much better than one can expect on top of a mountain and the view is worth adding to your bucket list. I told my friend that I eft my charger and needed to charge a battery. One of the staff over heard it and asked what kind of wire I was in need of. After telling him what i was looking for he began a search project trying to find someone with the right adapter. They put in an insane effort to help me with my need. The dedication to keep the guests happy shows. My problem was solved even tho I never asked them.I slept well, had a nice meal and loved the evening entertainment!

This was one of the most memorable experiences I had in Ethiopia. Being that I went during raining season, I was questioning if I should go up to the mountains as the weather was inclement. I decided to keep my reservation and spend one day here. How many times does one get to go to the mountains in Ethiopia and hang with the locals?
From the time I booked, I was in contact with Molla, who I am now honored to call friend & brother. He was very helpful and answering all of my queries. And went out of his way to ensure that I was okay with everything.
He arranged my airport pick up and as soon as I arrived at Lalibela Trekking Eco Tours, I was ushered to the nearby restaurant for lunch. The lunch was one of the best lunches I’ve had in Ethiopia. After lunch, I was introduced to my guide Kassahun. His name means, be a gift…and a gift he was! He was full of information about history of Lalibela, the churches, the people, and the surrounding towns and cities. Pleasure to speak with and he was always concerned with my safety.
Due to my flight delay, I wasn’t able to trek up to the lodge as we arranged. Instead, Molla arranged a 4x4 to drive us up as far as they can go and then we did about an hour of trekking, which turned out to be great.
Upon getting to the lodge, I was greeted by the staff who were all ridiculously nice and full of genuine smiles.
Kassahun took me to one of the local family homes where I experienced an authentic coffee ceremony and then they stuffed me with injera and shiro. We stayed there for a bit and discussed their lifestyle which is quite interesting.
The family welcomed me in their home with open arms and was eager to share with me what life was like for them in the mountains.
After that, we returned to the lodge as the weather was getting cooler and the sun was setting.
There was another gentlemen there from Holland who did the 7 hour trek up and we exchanged stories of our experience over dinner and fire.
Mesfin, who was one of the other guides was super awesome as well. Very knowledgeable and passionate about Ethiopia’s history and what the country in a whole has to offer. We actually hung out with him after at a place called Torpedo in town. You’ll have to read my review of that place.
Two of the locals washed our feet as they said that this was how they treat their guests. It was unreal.
We ate, laughed, danced and talked about Ethiopia.
They gave us warm water bottles to stay warm and large blankets as well.
After dinner and laughs, we went off to bed. By this time…it was cold, but nothing that would turn you into a ice cube.
;-)
The blankets they provide you are very thick to help you get cozy.
In the morning, we had breakfast and coffee and then were off on our way.
Overall, I would say that if you are going to Lalibela definitely do as least one day here at this lodge if you can. It was great being disconnected from technology and also witnessing this ineffable beauty created by the Most High Almighty.
My Tips and suggestions:
1. Bring warm clothes and socks.
2. Bring good trekking shoes.
3. Drink lots of water prior to ascending as I believe they stated that you are around 3900 Meters above sea level.
4. Leave all expectations at home
5. Trust that Molla and his team puts safety and your wellbeing before everything
6. Tell your friends about your experience in Ethiopia because whats in the media, its not true.
7. Unlike in certain parts in Addis were you have pick pockets, I felt completely safe here in Lalibela.

This was a trip out of the chaos of Addis ... into the clear, crisp air; amongst some true catheters, in the Ethiopian high country.
The scenery was stunning; and the care and attention and genuine interest by our six staff ... was even more rewarding.

I stayed a night in this wonderful place and saw a wonderful sunset and sunrise, the dinner was very tasty and the evening program and music nice. Molla of Eco Trekking in Lalibela organized the stay and the trek in the Lasta Mountains around Lalibela and I had a really good time. I can highly recommend him and his team for organizing this great trek.
