I have heard of Chautauqua from friends for years. I finally went this month. Athenaeum Hotel is owned by the Chautauqua Institute - which offers entertainment in the form of lectures and classes on a particular topic each week every summer. It is opened for 9 weeks. My week was about moral responsibility. The hotel is a Victorian style rambling...

I really wanted to like the Athenaeum. This was my third visit to Chautauqua. Many people find the hotel charming, but frankly, I found it very difficult to accept the many problems I encountered. The elevator broke down four times during my one week stay. In the first instance, the staff had no idea what to do about it. Many...

We're sorry to hear about your poor experience at the Athenaeum Hotel. As you said, we are a seasonal and historic hotel (built in 1881) which does drive some of our challenges. The Athenaeum is currently undergoing a multi-year renovation process that will address many of the topics you have noted, including a complete revamp of many of the rooms....

Anniversary dinner and cocktails on the porch! Had a decent selection of finer wines at reasonable prices. We had to wait an inordinate amount of time to order our wine and another couple ordered at the same time but she only came back a while later with one bottle instead of both??? Not a really a big deal but we...

Nice staff and interesting building (if rather old), but the bed had to be 30 years old and very uncomfortable. Awoke each morning to sore back and stiff neck (pillows are no better than the bed).................

We're sorry to hear that your bed was uncomfortable! The Athenaeum is currently undergoing a multi-year renovation process that will address many of the topics you have noted, including a complete revamp of many of the rooms (with new mattresses). We hope you enjoyed the myriad of programs that Chautauqua provides during your stay. Thank you for your feedback. All...

The Atheneum Hotel was the perfect venue for our daughter’s wedding. If you are looking for a unique site for your wedding and reception I would highly recommend you check it out. The location was so picturesque and the ambiance of the hotel was just what our daughter was looking for. Carly, Shawna, and the entire staff were so friendly...

When you stay here you step into another world, this early twentieth century masterpiece is all charm. The large public rooms and wide porch beckon you to slow your pace and relish the day. If you want resort living this is not the place for you, but if you value the authentic this is the spot. Sadly the Historic Amphitheater...

Was here in October for a wedding and really intrigued by the hotels history. While it may be on the older side, it is very charming with stunning surroundings. The institution was in slow season and our large group took over the hotel, in which they were very accommodating! I was in room 88, which had been updated compared to...

The wedding our daughter Meredith and her now husband held on September 26 was orderly and well managed; the food was of an excellent standard, as well, as the appetizers! I commend the Athenaeum for their orchestration providing the most charming and sensational wedding; the hotel staff were pleasant, friendly and helpful. My husband and I were married at the...

We booked this hotel after looking for something last minute for the July 4th weekend. The website made it sound very nice. It did sound a bit confusing, so we called up to book it and ask some questions. The prices didn't seem to make sense online, and not really much after we talked to her either, but we booked...

Dear Linda, Thank you for your feedback on your experience at the Athenaeum Hotel. I do agree with you that there is quite a lot of information to know when staying at the Athenaeum and I apologize that this information was not clearly explained. We will most definitely be taking the time to speak with the front desk staff about...

I visited this hotel 32 years ago, and it was a beautiful old Victorian hotel with wonderful service and excellent food and accommodations. Sadly, it is now run down and poorly staffed by mostly young, inexperienced high school and college students who needed summer employment. By mid-August, when we stayed there it appeared half the staff had returned home or...

Thank you for your review of the Athenaeum. I am saddened to hear that your visit did not meet your expectations. While it is true that a large portion of our staff is young due to the seasonal work, we sincerely hope that they are as accommodating and professional as possible. We take training our staff quite seriously and I...
