Safari isn’t just safari anymore…. And game lodges aren’t all alike. Every visit really does need to be special and every moment something to be remembered forever. The Bush House is not your typical Game lodge. The Lodge is set in the malaria free Madikwe Game Reserve. It is an old farmhouse that after years of family laughter and happiness has been transformed into an inviting and relaxing residence that encourages guests to kick off their shoes and unwind.

This was my 12th safari to East & Southern Africa & my 1st to Madikwe Game Reserve. My sole mission was in hopes of seeing the African Wild Dogs which I had only seen 3 times on prior trips tp- Africa. In my opinion, it is not fair to compare the landscape or game viewing of Eastern Africa vs Southern Africa. There is far more game in the East during migration but far more visitors & vehicles to contend with. I had the privilege of staying @ The Bush House in Madikwe for 11 wonderful nights. The on site owners & hosts Sue & Gordon, field guides Jody & Damien, as well as all the support staff rank a solid 10+. Since The Bush House has only 6 guest rooms the atmosphere is truly one of "family" as advertised. The attention to service & comfort is outstanding & 1st class. Flexibility is the norm when it comes to daily activities & meals. The Bush House water hole & underground viewing hide provides many opportunities to see various wildlife up close & personal as they come to drink' I saw 6 of the magnificent 7 on my drives with the ever elusive leopard being the lone exception. After much work by my field guides produced 3 wild dog sightings which was my main goal in coming to Madikwe. I've used a lot of words to say I would without reservation highly recommend The Bush House. Carl Nehring` USA, State of Oregon

Our family of 8 - 2 grandparents, 2 parents and 4 kids (aged 10, 8, 4 and 2) booked the Bush House for the first week of July. We chose this location due to the high reviews for an intimate and family-oriented safari, and it certainly lived up to them – this was definitely the highlight of our three-week trip and will be a place we would love to return to in future years. The property is spectacular and beautifully maintained. We loved having the place all to ourselves. Our kids enjoyed exploring it and made use of all the games on hand (soccer, cricket, rugby, swingball etc.) during the day. The safari experience was outstanding. We love the ability to get closer to game at Madikwe. We saw lions every game drive, and the magnificent seven by our 5th game drive….each sighing was better than any experience we have had in a game park. Our guide Damian was just terrific – and made this an immersive experience for our whole family: • So knowledgeable about the park, all fauna & flora, and took the time to respond to all of our questions in a fun and easy manner! • Ability to drive and track spoor was amazing! • Seemed to always be a step ahead of other safari vehicles…anticipated the direction in which animals would move, and we were always well positioned for filming without having to ask. • Made it fun for all of our family – the 4 kids (even 4 & 2) loved every moment. The rooms are luxurious and they catered for every need. Gluten free cookies were a nice touch, the turn down service with a hot water bottle and a story for the kids. We also loved that we were well spaced out around the property and not on top of each other – playing games by the fireplace each night. The food was also great. Our favorite was the breakfast upon returning from the game drive with a wonderful view over the lawns and waterhole…and knowing we had 4 – 5 hours to completely unwind before the afternoon drive. We also liked the different options for kids, as well as catering to different dietary requirements within our party. We also took advantage of the gym – perfect for an quick workout. As the property is several hectares surrounded by an electric fence, I was able to do a 5km run along the road and fence perimeter, and we also walked the main self guided walking trail through the area, learning a lot about the local flora which was very interesting. We loved the hide – quite amazing being almost level with the water and having an elephant drinking water several meters away was something I will never forget. The hide is very active during the day with animals. June was a great time to visit as the animals are far more active. Having left 90F / 32C Florida, we did find the early mornings and evenings cold and glad we had brought thick jackets, thermal layers, beanies etc. Shorts and t-shirts were fine for the day. We did find it too cold to swim. We ate indoors each evening – too cool to make use of the boma for an outdoor dinner. Thank you to all the staff for making our stay a truly memorable experience!

Thank you very much for your most kind and detailed feedback. It was a real pleasure having you all in camp and we are so happy that you all enjoyed your time at The Bush House. The gym, walking paths and fenced area are a good way to work off the chefs food! We look forward to your next visit, in a warmer month, so as to enjoy the boma and fire pit for dinner.

I was so lucky to return to The Bush House this year. And I will keep going back! With warm welcomes and ever present smiles, the staff spoiled me rotten every day. I was never hungry with their delicious, top notch food made with care and precision. They always accommodated my specific needs too. Every game drive brought incredible wildlife sightings and Jody, the game ranger, is instinctive and very knowledgeable. She made the experience fun and I learned a lot from her. The Bush House has an amazing waterhole with an unhindered view as their fence was positioned in such a way that it keeps us safe but it feels like the animals are within arms reach from the house. Wow wow wow! Very unique. They also have a brilliant underground hide that brings us up close and personal (safely of course) with the animals quenching their thirst at the waterhole. I always have unforgettable experiences at The Bush House and I absolutely love the aspect of being home within the African Bush. Each member of the The Bush House family works extremely hard to create this wonderful experience and they make me feel part of their family. Thank you Bush House! I recommend this place to everyone I come across in my travels. The calm and tranquility brings me peace and there is loads of excitement with each wildlife sighting.

An experience never to be forgotten. The team just made it a great personal time. They looked after all our needs. The room was comfortable and well laid out. The hide really makes your inter action with nature wonderful. The game drives lead by Damian we're a complete joy. How he connects with the reserve shows his knowledge. Many thanks, we would love to be back soon.

We visited recently, a family of three. The lodge is very conveniently located near the reserve entrance closest to the Botswana border which makes it a relatively quick trip both from Gaborone and Pretoria. The lodge staff are welcoming and got us settled quickly. The rooms are not huge but quite comfortable, and you'd be watering your time if you weren't spending as much of it as possible at the watering hole. The bed is big and comfortable and they had an extra bed in the room for our son. There is a huge bathtub with bath salts. They provide a wide range of high quality toiletries in large bottles (more environmentally friendly). We enjoyed the tea, coffee, and cookies in the room (also available at all times in the lounge). We loved the hot water bottles that they put in the beds at night. The rooms have private patios (but again, spend your time at the watering hole instead). One of the best features of the lodge (in case I haven't emphasized it enough) is the watering hole and hide which make for great wildlife viewing all day (and night) long. We really enjoyed relaxing there and watching the animals come and go. The lodge is very kid friendly with special dinners for the kids and fun things like glow sticks and sparklers for the kids. The food was quite good (special meals for vegetarians) with one exception. On the second night they made pizza for the kids and it was made with ketchup. The kids didn't eat it. I think the main chef had the day off because the other meals were much better. The game drives were enjoyable and the guide worked hard to try to show us interesting things. We didn't see a lion in two days but had a great sunset view of elephants at a big watering hole. They provide blankets and water bottles for the chilly morning drive. Keep in mind that all drinks (including sundowners on the game drives) are charged separately. Overall, a very pleasant getaway. We particularly liked that it was small with very few rooms, allowing for a more intimate experience.

I have been going to The Bush House for the past four years and have no hesitation in recommending it for a wonderful safari experience. As a professional wildlife photographer the fabulous underground hide is ideal for photographers with a difference. The big five area also offers great game drives. In fact they have the big seven ( cheetah and wild dog). The lodge has lovely gardens that supports numerous bird species and the homely atmosphere and great food make it one of my favorite destinations

We booked last minute for my birthday and took the family for a weekend away. The hosts, Sjoe, was efficient and easy to work with. The lodge was an old farm house that has been transformed to a beautiful homely lodge with the most immaculate gardens. The setting is over a watering hole which was well frequented by elephants and other animals. They have a dug out viewing point which allows one to be so close to the animals. The food was excellent, the staff friendly and accommodating and really made the stay so enjoyable. Thanks to them all.

An absolute gem of a lodge, situated in the Madikwe Game Reserve. I brought a group of guests on a photo safari and the experience was nothing short of incredible. From the action packed game drives, in which we saw magnificent seven and much much more, to the amazing in-house hide (where frequent buffalo, elephant and general game turned up daily) - this is a place that never gives you an excuse to put your camera down. Beyond the stellar photo and game viewing, the lodge and staff are all in a league of their own - attentive, kind, friendly and very passionate people make you feel at home and one of the family. The food was great and all the small details like hot water bottles in bed were a huge delight for my guests. Sue was a pleasure to work with prior to arrival and it was an experience that no one will forget. Everyone made such an incredible impact and I can't thank all the staff enough, I can't wait to return with more people to showcase what a wonderful lodge The Bush House is.
