After more than 2 years, my wife and were finally able to complete our 6 day safari at Tau. I have reviewed the game lodge before but since there has been a lot of upheaval in the travel and hotel industry I thought another review was worthwhile. We were met at the Madikwe airstrip by Declan (aka Dex, one of the rangers who I follow on Instagram), sadly he is moving to the East Cape so he was just about to complete his last drive at Madikwe, he drove us across the reserve to the Tau Game Lodge where we were welcomed like old friends with a cold drink, our luggage was whisked away to our chalet and we signed an obligatory release ready for our first game drive. As you can see from all the tripadvisor photographs, the Tau chalets overlook a large watering hole, this is probably one of the best, if not the best, watering hole in Madikwe. If you choose not to go on one of the game drives then you can just sit on the back deck of your chalet and you would have sightings that would rival many other safaris alone - however there is even more to see during the actual game drives. Every day our first drive was at 6:30am for 3-3.5 hours and the second at 3:30pm for 3-3.5 hours. Breakfast was at 9:30am and lunch at 1pm. Our ranger Lazarus was amazing, he actually grew up near the reserve and his knowledge of the reserve, its history and the animals and their behaviours and tracking was second to none. During one of the drives there appeared to be some kind of dispute between two of the junior rangers about who was next to visit a location. Lazarus stepped in with grace and authority, offered his spot in the order to the chagrinned ranger, this defused the situation and shows the importance of experience, both with the animals and with the humans! Lazarus was so friendly, welcoming and has a dry humour which just added to the incredible experience. Over the 6 days we ended up with different combinations of fellow passengers. All were enthusiastic and great company. Prior to Covid, you were seated for lunch and breakfast with just your group and dinner in the evening was spent with all your fellow passengers and your ranger. Since Covid, dinner is now also at separate tables, however we agreed to sit together with a lovely young dutch couple who was in our vehicle and they quickly rearranged tables for us to do that. I imagine they may adjust seating rules over the new few months but it is clear they are not stuck with their protocol. The food is still excellent at Tau! A variety of choices including Eland, Ostrich etc as well as more standard fare and the South African desserts are amazing. Also the price for wine and drinks is very reasonable (as in most of South Afica). Some , in previous reviews, have mentioned that Tau rooms needs updating. I am not sure if that is necessary. We found our bed to very comfortable, the furniture matched the chalets and the view from our chalet was spectacular. So little time is actually spent in your room - when we are not eating or on a drive or in the spa, we almost always find ourselves on the chalet deck watching herds of Zebra or Elephants wandering to and from the watering hole. One very early morning I even saw a Leopard at the watering hole ( Big 5 complete!) I cannot emphasize enough what an incredibly friendly and helpful staff works at Tau, everyone from the cleaners to the wait staff to the manager greets you with a warm smile and are always happy to help you in any way. It truly is what 5 star service should be. I especially want to call out Poppy and Jacobeth who were exemplary hosts! It was the Queen's funeral while we were visiting and Jacobeth organized us in the conference center so we could stream the funeral on faster wifi. We will definitely be going back to Tau! It is very reasonably priced, the service and food are amazing, the location is incredible!…
I truly believe that Tau Game Lodge has the best location in Madikwe. I've stayed there twice and absolutely love the active waterhole at the lodge which is frequented by wildlife all day, providing great photo opportunities. Both the comfortable rooms and the public areas have great views of the waterhole. The lodge is also easy to access compared to most of the other lodges, with a very short stretch of gravel. See my detailed review on my blog. Link in bio.
I cannot recommend Tau Game Lodge enough. From the moment we entered the gates to a welcoming parade of zebras, to the elephants chilling at the waterhole during check-in to the our very last moments on our final morning bush drive...everything was perfection. Herman was our guide for our 4 drives, and he has the best eye for spotting allllll the animals. We saw everything we wanted and more! And learned a lot as well (I now know what a lion looks like when it is sniffing out a female that it can smell from miles away)! You can also rest assured you will not go hungry. The food was delicious, plentiful, and always seemed to be available (muffins before the morning drive, snack during the morning drive, then a full breakfast, followed by lunch, then a snack before the afternoon drive, during the drive, and a 3 course dinner upon the return). Our chalet was also just the right size for 2 adults and was very comfortable (the beds were divine). There was air conditioning, but it was not really needed during our stay, an indoor and outdoor shower option, and the highlight was sitting on the back deck staring at elephants, warthogs, kudu, etc mere feet away, as well as watching the zebras, wildebeest and impala parading along the waterhole and hanging out at the edge of the bush. It was all just so surreal. A dream come true.…
We only had 24 hours at this exceptional lodge and made the very best out of it. The location of the lodge is simply breathtaking, the chalets clean, spacious, renovated and located just in front of the water, where dozens of elephants had their baths during our stay. The food, especially the salads, was phanatstic and the Safaris with our Ranger Patrick unforgettable. Words can hardly describe what a wonderful and once in a lifetime experience the stay at Tau Lodge was.
For my first trip to Madikwe, Tau is a place that stood head and shoulders above many. Loved the experience and personalized everything. The singing, the brilliance of the guides, the complete ambiance and I do not know how they pair people up, but it was done with absolute brilliance.
We spent 2 nights at Tau Game Lodge, and it was a true highlight. The room was nice and clean, the service almost too good, and food very good (and too much...). The point though is watching wildlife, and on that score it was the best ecperience. The water holes draws huge numbers o animals, with elephants playing around viewed directly from the chalet deck. The game drives, with our excellent guide Mutso (spelling?) added sightings of lions, cheeta, rhino, heyena, and finally a nat-geo worthy sighting of wild dogs. The last minute discount made it possible. If the opportunity presents itself - we will be back.
Tau lodge is a lovely place where you will see an abundance of spectacular animals, eat and drink well, and enjoy the serenity. Excellent staff at the lodge and on the Madikwe excursion. This was the highlight of my trip.
We have spent 3 nights with Tau Game Lodge and this was the highlight of our two and half weeks' holiday in South Africa. I fully recommend it based on: 1. easy to access - we used a rental car to drive from Pretoria/Johannesburg 2. all big 5 seen during drives, in addition you can view the animals at the watering hole from each room 3. very knowledgeable and professional guides - Lazarus who drove with us for all three days seemed to always be the one to discover first the animals' tracks and spot them before the guides from other lodges. During our last drive, we had the chance to spot two young cheetahs who chase and a killed a calf zebra. While this is a rare encounter, you can be sure that Tau Game Lodge and Lazarus are the best you can get.
I have been going to Tau Lodge since it was built and it never fails to be one of my est experiences in Africa. The Rangers are knowledgeable and fun whist being extremely safe. The Accommodation is very clean and well looked after. The restaurant offers a varied menu which is good. The Game come to the water hole which is protected by an electric fence. A must for anyone visiting that area.
This place has just the right size and amenities to cover all you want to see and do. Their guides are very knowledgeable and know how to track and find the animals that you want to see. They also have a watering hole right next to the lodge where you can watch animals and birds there from your back door or while you enjoy their delicious meals.
