MalaMala was terrific! It's in a private game reserve, so the rangers are able to go "off-road" in pursuit of animals, which permitted us to see far more animals, and at a much closer range, than would have been possible in a national park (where there are apparently strict rules governing the circumstances under which the vehicles are permitted to...

We visited Mala Mala in April with my 13 year old son. We were met at the airport by our guide Jonty who started our incredible journey on the drive to main camp. We started seeing beautiful animals and hearing their stories immediately. Over our 5 days of game drives and time in camp we experienced many awesome experiences with...

This really was a memorable experience for us. We spent three nights here and had 6 game drives during our stay. Our guide Jacques was wonderful who really tried to ensure that we see the Big 5 (which we did). Additionally, being a photographer himself, he always tried to ensure that his jeep was in the right spot to get...

Our time here was amazing. Rangers and staff can not do enough for you, we were treated like royalty! Our rooms overlooked the Sand River, which was special. We were lucky enough to see the Big 5 in one morning and the Big 7 in one day, a kill and 2 unsuccessful chases. Our family group had 2 vehicles/rangers Jacques...

Everything wonderful, just come back from part of Titan Tour. We saw the big five and so much more. Couldn't fault it and would love to go back. You have to be there to believe how good it is, and how close you get to what is after all wild animals. I could have almost touched one of the lions...

Beyond description. You spend every day seeing incredible sights and animals, and your afternoons and evenings eating and drinking amazing food and wine. But the highlight by far was our ranger Bruce! Insanely knowledgeable, but also very relatable, fun and full of infectious passion. If you go, ask for Bruce! You definitely won't regret it.

We visited mala mala as part of a Titan group in March . My friend and I had no idea what to expect but it was the most amazing experience ever. The accommodation is so clean and well equipped and the two bathrooms are a huge benefit especially in the mornings. The rangers are all amazing with so much respect...

We just came back from our first ever safari trip. We went not knowing what to expect. However, after just one or two drives, you get into a routine and by the end of our trip we were "experts". Mala Mala was the first reserve we stayed in on our trip (9th and 10th of April 2017). We had a...

Amazing opportunity to view game. The rangers are exceptionally well qualified and go out of their way to make the game viewing experience one to remember. Each drive lasts about 3.5 hrs. Layered clothing is recommended so that layers can be added/removed depending on whether it is hot or the weather changes to extremely cold as game drives are done...

Stayed at Mala Mala Main Camp for 2 days in March with the Titan group of 30. I would advise anyone going on Safari to book a private reserve, as if you go to anywhere else for instance Kruger national Park you will not be able to follow the animals into the bush. There were 5 jeeps on our tour...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
MalaMala Game Reserve is the Safari Industry's blueprint to the luxury photographic safari. In existence since 1927, this massive thriving tract of land produces the most exciting wildlife experience this side of the equator. MalaMala Game Reserve is the largest private Big Five game reserve in South Africa. Comprising 13 300 ha (33 000 acres), MalaMala shares a 19 km (12 mile) unfenced border with the world-renowned Kruger National Park, and lies strategically sandwiched between the National Park and the Sabi Sand Reserve. For over four decades, Michael Rattray has remained focused on his objective to preserve and protect the land over which he is custodian. Allowing nature to move to its innate rhythm, guests experience today what the forefathers of the African Safari would have experienced at the turn of the century. This philosophy has paid off, as experienced by a veritable collection of photojournalists and film-makers who have made MalaMala their destination of choice to capture footage of wildlife viewing that would rival any Hollywood production for thrilling and breathtaking animal encounters. MalaMala's Camps (MalaMala Main Camp, Sable Camp and Rattray's on MalaMala) are the embodiment of an authentic safari experience pioneered at a time when the safari was simple - unassuming camps, vast sweeping plains, the African sky and the bush in all its splendour. Wellness was the feeling after a long day in the wild. Cigars were shared without pomp and ceremony. Guests to MalaMala will still spend hours beneath an inky sky in the traditional boma exchanging stories from the wild - a sumptuous meal, good company and relaxed faces warmed by the crackling fire, accompanied by the nocturnal symphony of sound. ... more   less
