Family owned and run both the fly shop and restaurant are awesome. Fished here last summer and it was 100 by noon. Went to Abes for three and only three very good margaritas and a fat burger. Humorous conversation with Abes grandson Tim, an avid fisherman and the server. The fly shop provided no nonsense service and updates on fishing...

Thank you for your review; glad to hear that you enjoyed your meals at our restaurant (the 1/2 pound burger is my personal favorite). The winter can be a great time to fish the San Juan (as you know) since there are less folks on the river and our winters are typically mild. Hopefully you can make it up again...

This is a review based solely on the Fly Shop. They have won great selection of flies. Especially the small midges that you will need to fish The San Juan River. Great prices on nymphs, dries and streamers. Many other accessories that you will find helpful while on the water. Friendly and helpful staff.

Management response:

Hello Gregory, Thank you for your review; glad to hear that you were able find everything you needed for fishing the San Juan. Tight Lines

We had no heat in the rooms and the temperature was at 32f degrees. When we asked the front desk for help, they sent a maintenance person who was unable to repair the heater. Staff was rude and the maid took items from the fridge (they thought we had checked out), no apology was given.

Management response:

- First and foremost please excuse the tardiness of this response. Ironically we experienced a short spurt of cool weather (less than a week) during your stay. Generally we do thorough check of our heaters once low temps are foretasted, however this unexpected cold spurt did not allow for such. Unfortunately we learned the heater in your room was one...

You know I can only say that there are only a few places that I frequent that are family owned and this is one of them.I have always enjoyed my visit's to the San Juan and stopping at Abe's has always been a tradition. The family is about as real and genuine as they come. The store may be old but...

The folks at Abe's were fantastic. The service people in the Fly Shop provided great insights and tips for the San Juan River. Helpful and Courteous. The food and service in the restaurant were excellent as well. Simple but good food. Just right for a fly fishing adventure when you are spending the entire day catching trout. Don't miss the...

It's been 10 plus years since I stayed in the motel and next time I go I will look for other options. Obviously location is the draw for the motel because the rooms are bare bones minimum as far as essentials go. They say there is a kitchenette but there isn't a single thing (knife, fork, can opener, pots, pans,...

Hi David W. Thank you for your comments regarding your stay @ Abe's. Yes, you're correct: it's all about the San Juan River & great trout fishing; so glad you followed the fishing advice via shop assistance & had productive fishing! (BTW: As has been the routine for years, cooking/ eating utensils are conveniently provided upon guests' request.) Keep in...

OK. It is pretty dirty, run down and shabby. Having said all that, I can't think of a better place to spend a week or so fishing. I guess you can stay at the Soaring Eagle, but why? I'm there to fish, not eat a gourmet dinner right at the best time of the day to fish. I can eat...

Everything you need to fish is found at Abe's. They rent fly fishing and spin fishing gear, weighters, etc. There were two men, long-time staff who were very friendly and full of advice on where to fish and what to use. Plenty of snacks to purchase.

Just got back from a week at Abe's Motel and Fly Shop. This is simply a great place to stay for several reasons. First, Abe's has been there since 1958; and caters to the fishing traffic. Navajo Dam, NM is a very small community (300-400?) folks and exists primarily for the fishing; fly fishing on the San Juan, and a...

This hotel caters to fly fisherpersons who want to be close to the San Juan River Quality Water but don't want to pay more than a hundred bucks a night. It fits this bill perfectly. If you're staying at Abe's for any other reason, you might be disappointed as is a very basic hotel. We had a room with an...

Abe's Motel and Fly Shop has been on the San Juan River since 1958. We also have a comfortable lounge, motel, restaurant, RV / trailer park, boat storage facilities, and a grocery store. We were the first to explore the river for trout fishing, the first to guide on the river, and the first to fly fish the San Juan in winter months.
