Combining aman, the Sanskrit-derived word for 'peace', and kora or 'circular pilgrimage' in Dzongkha, the Bhutanese language, Amankora, is a series of lodges in the Kingdom of Bhutan's central and western valleys. The sole surviving Himalayan Buddhist Kingdom, Bhutan is one of the most remote and pristine environments on earth. To best experience all that Bhutan has to offer, Amankora can tailor journeys that include a combination of its lodges located in the valleys of Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey and Bumthang.

Read Amankora Paro for part 1 Read amankora Thimphu for part 2 Read amankora Punakha for part 3 Overall, I think Aman lived up to their promise on a luxury experience of Bhutan. Aman is not your run of the mill tour operator. They pride themselves of exclusivity and this inevitably comes with a price. This is a very chaperoned way of experiencing Bhutan and it’s only free and easy to the extend that Aman will say yes to whatever you like to do at the moment. My partner observed how well and with flair the staff pronounce the words “ mostly certainly” as these must be the most common words used across Aman resorts.

Amankora Bumthang, with 16 rooms, overwhelms you with service and attention from the moment you arrive. You’re greeted by the manager and several staff, one carrying hot towels laced with lemongrass. They remember how you like your coffee and tea. Just ask, and it happens. Be sure to request a visit to the former royal chapel just behind the hotel. Heaven forbid you should carry anything, or open a door by yourself. Staff is ever present, but never intrusive. The spa has 3 treatment rooms and a steam room. Morning yoga is also recommended, and be sure to try the archery. Food is excellent and beautifully served. Want something special? Ask. And the rooms are large and immaculate. Whenever you return to your room, it has been tidied up. Amankora is not your budget choice, but if you stay here, you will understand what luxury is all about.

Dear filmg, Kuzuzangpo la again and thank you for your additional reviews of your stays at Bumthang, Punakha & Thimphu, which I have just seen now after responding to your review of your stay in Gangtey. My personal favourite is our lodge in Bumthang, especially with its location next to Wandichholing Palace, the principal residence of the 1st King of Bhutan. Thank you again for your incredibly kind feedback of all of your lodge stays, I will be sure to pass them onto our respective teams. We look forward to hopefully welcoming you back to the Kingdom some time soon. Until then, safe travels! Tashi Delek, John Reed Country Manager

Aman knows how to treat their guests. We felt like family from the minute we entered. The staff is beyond helpful and friendly ! The room was divine..best shower in Bhutan! I didn’t feel well one day and the chef took extra special care for me preparing a simple diet. But the food was really superb. So much fun doing archery with the staff and other guests. I only want to stay in Aman resorts ! They are truly the BEST! Special thank you to property Manager !

As with all Amans, stellar standards of service, delightful personal touches and fantastic attention to detail. A very warm welcome - indeed, “Welcome home”. We were also fortunate enough to experience the outdoor bonfire and singing and dancing with local ladies and the chef on our first evening, replete with local cider hot toddies, hot water bottles placed onto our laps with blankets and hot snacks. The fact that an enterprising local dog broke a plate pinching the sausages I had left while I was dancing round the fire pit, just added to the memorable nature of the occasion! It was a wonderful evening. The food was excellent and it was delightful to have the opportunity to have breakfast outside in the warm sun, overlooking the surrounding village buildings and countryside. The room was large and supremely comfortable, if slightly dark. A charming and memorable touch was the blessing by a monk on our departure after our two night stay and we we very impressed by the manager who, at all times was very friendly and we thought dealt very calmly and helpfully with other guests who were understandably perturbed when their flight back to Paro was cancelled, due to technical difficulties (Something completely beyond the control of Aman, but please note that the flight is intermittently cancelled, due to sometimes weather conditions, too. Much safer therefore, as we were advised, not to depend on a flight back to Paro if you need to make an onward flight, but to fly to Bumthang from Paro near the start of a Bhutan tour, then gradually make your way back to Paro, in stages via Gangtey and Punakha, by road.) We had originally wanted to stay at all five of the Amankora lodges in Bhutan, but due to availability during their high season, even aiming to book 11 months before, could only accommodated at Bumthang. We absolutely adored our stay there, but having also stayed at the Gangtey Lodge, the Uma in Punakha and in a beautiful one bed villa at the Uma in Paro, were actually glad we had the variety. The rooms in the Aman lodges seem identical and overall the lodges have fewer Bhutanese touches, paintings, textile wall hangings etc. than the other properties we stayed at. We hiked past the Aman lodge at Gangtey, and drove past the one at Punakha. We both thought the setting and views of the Uma at Puniakha ( stupendous!) and from Gangtey Lodge were far superior, and we were very impressed by both properties. Mentioned just in case of use to others planning an overall itinerary in Bhutan. We are self confessed “Aman junkies” and have now stayed at ten of their wonderful properties, but this trip showed us there are some other very special places to stay, too. Our stay at Bumthang was just as glorious as at the others however! The road journey onto Gangtey from there was very long and quite the “road massage” our lovely guide described it as, but we are still very glad we visited the Bumthang valley, to see another, and very beautiful, quiet and rural part of the country.

Dear sallywil2017, Kuzuzangpo la and thank you for taking the time to write your detailed review of your Amankora Bumthang stay. It has made me excited to return to Bumthang very soon. Dancing around the firepit with the team is one of my favourite evenings in Bumthang as well, such a wonderful experience that I'm glad you enjoyed too. I will ensure all of your generous compliments are passed to our Lodge Manager and the Chef, they will be thrilled to hear them and pass them on to the team as well. Thank you for being so understanding in regards to the cancelled return flight to Paro. Unfortunately that does occasiaonally happen, and I'm happy Rinzin was able to look after you so well in this situation. We look forward to hopefully welcoming you back to Bhutan sometime soon, to experience more of our Amankora lodges. Until then, safe travels to other Aman Resorts! We just wrapped up a three night stay at the Amankora Bumthang. The property was stunning and the service very friendly. It w I wasn’t sure how the two hour minimum comes into play for pick up / drop offs? as probably one of our top two favorite rooms during our stay in Bhutan (other was Gangtey Lodge). The room was spacious with half being bedroom / sitting area with nice window seat and the other half an open bathroom. I’m normally not a fan of the open bathroom but the layout works well here. The hotel has a very nice wine list and while the food was good we found the menu limited with not much variety compared to other properties during our stay (not sure if that’s an Aman thing or just Bumthang as we stayed at other brands elsewhere). That being said, they were very accommodating to requests if you wanted something different they could pull off and Rinzin, manager, even had them prepare buckwheat noodles (putta) for me for lunch one day as it’s a local specialty I had not had a chance to try during my visit. You even get a blessing by a monk for safe travels on your journey upon departure (especially important when flying in Bhutan!!).

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights at the end of a 2 week trip. While we stayed in many great hotels we saved perhaps the best for last. What really impressed us was the way the staff anticipated our needs, sending water and home made snacks with our driver during excursions, and setting up archery lessons in between rain showers (complete with local arak to help our aim). The Amankora is a beautiful building - fantastically well finished, great facilities, excellent restaurant. But most of all, when our flight was cancelled the manager Rinzin was able to help us get home, arranging a car across Bhutan, and providing food, water, pillows and blankets for the drive. We felt really well taken care of. Thank you!

We were lucky to stay 3 nights (one due to a flight cancellation to Paro) We have stayed in many very good hotels before but this one was outstanding! We felt very welcomed and were so perfectly taken care off. The staff is very friendly and always good for a laugh. They are all very attentive and helpful and always there for you with a smile and small unexpected surprises: e.g. very thoughtful presents on your bed after dinner, our dirty shoes we left outside the room because we didn’t want to take dirt in, where shining clean next morning ( as if they were new) , a little ceremony with a monk on the day of departure to secure our well-being - just to mention a few. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner were always very delicious and special - the chef even gave us a recipe book because we enjoyed his food so much! and what shall I say the room, the beds , the atmosphere- you can not wish for more. it was an unforgettable stay !

The Amankora Bumthang was spectacular. The service was ever-present, and impeccable. The room was gorgeous. The food was absolutely delicious. They really went "above and beyond". For instance, as I am not a fan of onions, they provided me with an onion-free menu! I have been all over the world, and this was best hotel stay of my life. Very expensive, but very impressive!!!!

Amankora is without doubt one of Bhutan’s best hotels. Beautifully designed, modern and at the same time aware of local tradition, it offers luxurious accommodation and excellent food. We were pleasantly surprised by a wonderfully organized New-Year’s feast and hugely enjoyed our stay. The only thing we found a little disturbing was what appeared as a certain sense of snobbery attached to the otherwise impecable service, especially with regard to how locals are treated by hotel staff, and a feeling of being constantly surveiled. Take-away lunches come at a rather unjustifiable price.
