We were delighted to return to The Last Word for the 11th time and were warmly welcomed by Franklyn. Tea and Milk Tart was immediately served by the poolside while our luggage was being taken to our favourite room! (Pool Suite 3). This small hotel is elegant, comfortable and peaceful! The décor is lovely and our suite with private pool was perfect for relaxing during the afternoon after a busy day exploring Franschhoek and it’s surrounding areas! The location is perfect and ideal for walking to local restaurants (with Uber available for restaurants further afield).
Breakfasts are lovely with a buffet and cooked options. All are freshly prepared and presented! The complementary wine & cocktail bar as well as the fully stocked mini bar in room and other little touches such as the little desserts left at turndown and a bottle of bubbly on my birthday (and a very thoughtful Leopards Leap de alcoholised wine for my wife!) all demonstrate the thoughtfulness of the Last Word team! Highly recommended!

It is with a heavy heart I write this review.
The reason is purely selfish.
I do not want this hotel to become so popular that we would be unable to return.
Disclaimer aside this property is fabulous.
Met by Franklin who welcomed us as first time visitors.
Our room (8) was huge.
28 ft by 28 ft with double bed and comfortable sofa.
Huge bathroom with stand alone bath and wet area at least 6ft by 6 ft with the biggest toilet area I have ever seen in a hotel and I have stayed in a few in 50 years of business and holidays.
Equipped with fridge with all complementary wines /soft drinks and a full sherry decanter.
A small pool area but big enough for guests to sunbathe as well as an upstairs sunbathing area.
Watch out for acorns from a magnificent oak tree which the hotel is built around.
Downstairs again a large multipurpose room for breakfast with a large sitting area also.
Again a bar with spirits, wine and soft drinks FOC.
Breakfast is completely civilised with usual meats cheeses yoghurts etc with all fresh hot items cooked to order.
No hot plates of greasy bacon, overcooked eggs etc.
The staff of Conrad and Franklin as well as breakfast ladies and cleaners could not do enough for you.
Bikes are available for use and there are good cycling paths around.

Final touches include a small dessert on your bed at night and on final night a half bottle of champagne and chocolates.
Well situated on Main Street just opposite the wine tram booking office but no traffic noise.
All in all the best casual hotel we have ever stayed at and as McArthur said “We will return”!!!!!

Final thanks to Conrad ,Franklin and all staff.

We stayed here for three nights on our honeymoon. The moment we arrived into the car park, we were warmly greeted by management and our suitcases were taken up to our room. We were then offered a drink and a selection of menus as to where we might like to eat that evening - nice touch. There were other nice touches marking our special occasion that really made our stay a warm and memorable one.

The house itself is beautiful and the rooms are massive and very clean. Breakfast was delicious with a good range of dishes available and the pool area is also very nice (albeit not many sun beds in the sun, but that didn’t bother us too much). It’s in a very good location at the end of the Main Street and is also within walking distance from the wine tram. Overall, this was a great stay and we’d recommend it.

A very convenient hotel on the Main Street, many good restaurants and the Wine Tram within walking distance. The hotel will happily book any restaurant you want if there are spaces, and arrange a car for you to the further out wineries.
This hotel had a major flood issue a few years ago, meaning we couldn’t stay on that occasion. So we assumed that all of the rooms had been refurbished after that and just booked the entry level grade. A mistake I think. We were given the room nearest the entrance,it is at the top of the slope down to the main building where most of the rooms are, and we wondered if it had escaped needing a refurb after the flooding. Whilst spacious it was a little tired decor wise, I haven’t seen such an elderly ac unit in a long time. The outdoor space was in need of a refresh and not enticing at all. And personally speaking we loathe open bathrooms with no doors.
The breakfast was excellent, and the pool area pleasant. The open bar for pre dinner drinks is a nice idea. If we did return we would certainly ask to have a room within the main building.

Thank you for the feedback from your time with us in Franschhoek. We are delighted to hear that you returned to Franschhoek and The Last Word after being unable to stay with us in 2013 when the hotel unfortunately flooded. All our rooms were refurbished after the flood to ensure that every room be of the same high standard. We also do a soft refurb every two years, or as needed. The team will be thrilled to hear that you enjoyed their breakfasts and your time in town. Wishing you safe travels. Kind regards, Kelsey

We booked 5 nights here as part of our 40th wedding anniversary holiday. This was our third visit to the hotel albeit it was 11 years since the last time. It was great to see that Conrad and Franklin are still there and the place was as we remembered it. We had a pool suite and were actually allocated the same room as last time which was great as it provides multiple areas to chill out in. Being right on the main street it is convenient for all of the restaurants, shops and the wine tram booking office is just opposite. Franschhoek has gotten much busier since our last visit and you might be better booking restaurants before you even get here. Although we never made any coffee in our room we did notice that there was not even a biscuit provided which we did think was a bit lacking considering the price. We were also slightly disappointed that the hotel did not mention our anniversary as every other hotel we stayed at (other than Last Word Long Beach) left bubbly, desserts and a card which we really appreciated. Overall though we did enjoy our stay.

We stayed here for 2 nights and were delighted to return after 6 years. We were warmly welcomed by Conrad and the check-in process was fast and efficient.

Our room was gorgeous with a garden balcony and loungers but we were so busy we didn't get to use them. The amenities were great and the included mini bar was definitely welcomed. The desserts left on your bed each evening was and still is such a lovely touch.

The bed was super comfortable and so quiet and a pleasure to sleep in.

Breakfast was fantastic and the food and coffee were delicious and always bought to us with a smile on the ladies faces who served us. You had a choice of a small cold buffet and then ordered off a menu for your main.

Being so close to the middle of town you could walk anywhere and we enjoyed a couple of restaurants within walking distance for dinner.

The Wine Tram was full when we wanted to go so a Private Wine Tour was organised very quickly for us by Conrad and was amazing. Highly recommend!

We didn't' get to use the gorgeous pool as we were too busy but it's such a gorgeous setting and would love to have had more time there to enjoy it.

The lounge area and free cocktail bar in the reception area is stunning and we made ourselves a drink and went upstairs to the sundeck to watch the sunset, just stunning.

We wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Last Word and look forward to staying again if we're ever back in Franschhoek.

Thanks to Conrad and his team for a wonderful stay!

We spent one night here for a friend's 40th Birthday and we didn't want to leave. The rooms are beautifully decorated, they have massive bathrooms, underfloor heating (which was so appreciated during winter), luxurious bedding and towels (gowns and slippers), the really don't miss a thing. Crème Brule desserts on your bed when you arrive home - it really was such a treat. We were able to chill in the lounge area by the fire, they have games and books available to the guests. Breakfast was delicious! And the service is outstanding - nothing was too much effort for the staff. I would highly recommend this hotel. It's also located centrally on the high street - so you don't need a car at all.

My wife and I stayed at this establishment for the first 9 days of our honeymoon. We received Exceptional service from all the staff but Franklin did more than required, I would go so far as to say that without Franklin I wouldn’t of given the hotel such a high rating.

The pool area and lounge are beautifully decorated with a modern classic boutique hotel style.

The rooms are slightly out dated with standard hotel furniture and decor, the TVs need to be upgraded. There are 5 channels on the tv, 2 of which don’t work. one would think you’ll have a smart tv and full DSTV and Netflix if you pay this amount per night for accommodation. I think all upstairs rooms should have a balcony and the downstairs shower size is not what I would expect at a hotel of this level.

To be honest, we won’t stay here again, it’s just not worth the money. Don’t get me wrong, we loved the breakfast, service and location, everyone did everything they could to make our stay romantic and comfortable it’s purely value for money that’s the only issue.

So first of all: Great rooms, exclusive furniture,
reception very helpful, employees professional
and always there , good recommendations for fine dining.Tried to book us a table when the city was very busy.
And now the very big let down: They dont serve any Lunch oder dinner! in the brochure it stated
that you can order lunch or dinner a day before(which sounds already not like 5 star hotel) But when I asked for lunch, the guy answered „we dont do lunch“ and when I asked
for dinner, they gave me the menu from the place
next door to fetch me a pizza! So this is really not accepteable for 380€ /per night.
I went to the cafe next door and ate a pizza on the very nice hotel Terrasse. That would be all fine if they called themself a guesthouse and charge half the price! So I felt a little like a student with the pizza. We came to Franchhoek for fine dining and thats what most people are interrested in ..So they have very nice breakfast,
but thats it with food.
Another thing : The included Bar is not very well maintained...Open white wine bottles for days.Open bottles of white wine should be removed after 1-2 days. They dont taste anymore,in my case they were already fermented.
So to cut a long story short: really too expensive
for what they offer. Its not a 5 star hotel.
Its a 4 Star guesthouse

We do include all beverages in our rates and restock all fridges and bar areas every morning, and will of course source anything else a guest should want.
