I was so looking forward to being back at this hotel as it has been one of my favourites in the past. I was last here in 2011.
It has most certainly lost it's charm which is such a pity as the location and the actual building is beautiful but the actual upkeep of the property and the attention to detail is not what it used to be. The rooms are tired and in desperate need of a refurb or fixing. It is looking grubby. We had lunch on the terrace on afternoon and had to ask for table settings, cutlery, condiments. When I used to stay there whilst working in the area from 2007 to 2011 the service was impeccable. The staff were on top form and the waiters were trained really well.
Small things like no toilet paper in bathrooms, chipped cupboards, dirty balconies, spiderwebs in bathrooms and no fresh milk in the fridge for coffee in the mornings all are annoying little things that could be sorted with a little attention.
I don't think it a 5 star hotel any longer and should not be charging 5 star prices. If it were a 3 star property then the review rating would have been higher but the fact that they are still charging 5 star prices makes the rating lower.
On a positive note, you cannot beat the beautiful scenery and the gardens are gorgeous.

My wife and I had our wedding ceremony at the Le Franschoek Hotel and Spa on the 24th of October 2020. We decided to have our wedding at this hotel after searching for a Cape Wineland's themes venue and we were very lucky to come across this amazing Franschoek destination hotel.

From the start we were taken care of by the Hotels onsite and full time Function and Banquet Manager: Portia Africa. Portia was an unbelievable help and the wedding would not have been possible without all her help. Organizing a wedding from a different province was made so easy with Portia's high level of professionalism and her extensive experience in event planning and management was certainly evident. Thank you Portia for helping us have the PERFECT wedding. The hotel was very accommodating with the use of outside suppliers for Decor and Flowers and the different service providers worked seamlessly.

The Hotels, has 2 venue rooms both very luxurious in decor and very luxurious in the views that they offer. The view from the glass house venue on to mountain is absolutely priceless.

The catering and food is also top notch and will have you guests asking for more:D The hotels's catering team offers drop plate service with enough staff and bar tenders on duty to ensure that the guests were served as promptly and professionally as needed. For our wedding we were permanently assisted by the Beverage and Catering Manager: Alex. Throughout the entire wedding evening Alex was always there to ensure that we were satisfied with the food ordered, ensuring that the timeline was in sync with the Kitchen's planning and also ensuring that the bar tab were being used for the intended purposes. Thank you very much Alex. The night was so seamlessly well run because of your expertise.

Portia and Alex truly went the extra mile to make sure we as the bridal couple and all our guests were happy and comfortable. Portia even arranged package promotional prices for rooms offering great value room rates for guests.

The rooms were fantastic, clean and serviced. The concierge was fantastic handling special requests and was open 24 hours which greatly assisted some guests looking for a room in the early hours of the morning.

I can highly and without a doubt recommend this Hotel as a Wedding Venue. The atmosphere, views and service from Portia, Alex and Chris is truly best in class and cannot even be compared to some of the more mainstream wedding venues in the area. This Hotel and the managers there is a HIDDEN GEM!!

Thank you Le Franschoek we will be back next year for an anniversary stay.

Arrived after a longish drive, greeted by bubbly and friendly receptionist, offering fine dining menu for the evening.
'But you can't have that, it's fully booked.'
Why do they raise your hopes of a nice meal and then dash it away?
It turns out the dining room was booked out by one group of guests, presumably well in advance.
But there was no alternative venue offered or planned for a nice sit down meal.
An ho later they still displayed the fine dining menu in reception, selling something they could not offer.
'Why not?' we asked the manager - 'It's the rules' he said. What rules??
Anyway, in the end we got the bar menu, on a veranda (our choice, admittedly) but under an inadequate heater.
It's a 'sirloin steak in a draught' sort of place, rather than a 'fillet steak in comfort' place.
Nice rooms, adequate breakfast but in the end, we remember what we didn't get.

Response from Chris S, General Manager at Le Franschhoek Hotel & Spa
Responded 4 Feb 2020
Dear Ptn40po5, Thank you very much for taking the time to post a review of your recent stay with us, Our sincere apologies that Sauvage was booked out for dinner and that the Casual Bar and Lounge menu was the only available offering. We use the Menu's at reception to advertise our offering and thus they would be on display for guests staying for a longer period. We trust we will be able to welcome you back and please feel free to contact me directly should this happen in order for me to personally oversee your reservation and diner requirements. Email: gm@lefranschhoek.co.za Kind Regards, Chris C Snyman General Manager

Rooms are very tired and in need of maintenance. The first room we were given had a cracked toilet, missing and broken door and window handles and a very unpleasant stain on the bedroom carpet. We were travelling with teenage children and wanted our rooms to be reasonably close, they weren’t. It took ages to get any resolution but we had to be persistent. In the end we moved to another hotel. This is not a four star hotel by any means and the website images don’t reflect our experiences or reality. It’s a real shame as the location is stunning, so long as you don’t mind being outside of Franshhoek....the hotel just needs money spending on it.

I made a booking for the Valentines dinner. We were 3 couples that felt very flattered on arrival at the reception desk and we were politely directed to the dinner room, before entering we were welcomed with a bright smile and an offer of bubbly (Champaign). Entering the room a lovely female greeting while showing us to our table. I absolutely loved the seating spacious (covid) yet elegant and serene. The chef came to our table and introduced himself also informing us he will be preparing our meals for the evening. We as couples were delighted with the atmosphere while enjoying our delicious meals, we absolutely loved the food and variety was divine, portion amount of the meals must say value for money!

will definitely be visiting @Le Franschhoek SOON :-)

The hotel is ideally situated away from the hustle and bustle of a little town (only 2 minutes drive) and at the bottom of a mountain which allows you to experience the tranquility of Franschoek. The property has almost everything one needs and there is therefore no need to leave the hotel. The service is of a high quality and the property is clean and staff are ever willing to help which tells me the hotel is well managed and led by a capable General Manager. The food is great and the gardens are maintained par excellence. The views from your rooms are picture perfect. Definitely worth a 5 star rating from me

The hotel is in a lovely setting with wide views of the mountains & vineyards. The rooms are spacious & clean. Pool is a nice area but could have done without the accompanying music playing, it should be a peaceful area. Breakfasts were ok but the hot selection was a bit basic & most hotels these days have an “egg station”.
It’s a bit too far out of the town to walk.

Our stay was very dissapointing, due to the fact our airconditioner was dripping water on the carpet. We were moved to another room, where there was no hot water from one of the basins, as well no seals in the basin's "push-in" plugs. Their slogan of "Go slow on the H2o" is unfortunately only for guests. Allover their maintenance is well behind.
The pool and pool area were great. Well maintained pool and loungers with attendants all the time. Drinks and snacks can be ordered while lounging round the pool.

Stayed for 3 nights that was enough. Don’t take villa no 68 it stinks, horrible nasty little toilet separate from bathroom. Bathroom needs upgrading with a shower that you have to step over bath to get into, pity help older people, bedroom tiny you only had enough room to walk round bed, definitely not 4 star accommodation

What kind of food is available at the hotel?
Answer from Jay H
Napier, South Africa58 contributions32 helpful votes
Hot and cold dishes available at breakfast: fruits, cold meat, cheese, cereal, yogurts - as well as such expected hot foods as eggs, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, sausages (western expectations). Plenty of bread varieties and fresh pastries. Fruit juices, tea, coffee. Lunch menu a little disappointing: mostly sandwiches, burgers, salads. A good time to go and eat in the village of Franschhoek. Dinner (at Dish Restaurant) is well served and of high class. Meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. Nothing particularly exciting, but all extremely well cooked, flavoured and presented. Such ingredients as Cape salmon, calamari, chicken, duck, lamb (which I found vey good), steaks; pasta, vegetables. Various desserts. A good wine list (of South African wines) with a wide range of wines by the glass.
