The pros: Close to town, lovely gardens, friendly hosts. The cons: breakfast is carb and sugar heavy, mattress creaks - is old and needs replacing. Bedding and pillows could be better - a simple switch out of old sheets with good quality cotton ones as well as feather pillows (for the foam they have now) would make the Martin Hill...

We are sorry that our guest's experience didn't measure up to our expectations. Since many people are allergic to down we do not use down pillows as our regular bedding. However, we do keep a set which we will use on request, so if you are a down pillow fan please let us know. Our breakfasts do run toward the...

Room was clean and comfy. Staff was attentive without being overbearing. Breakfast was excellent, but no entree choice, this isn't a problem for me as I like to be surprised with food. The walk to downtown is a little far but workable. The trolley stops right in front but doesn't run late.

Thank you for the thoughtful review. You are correct that we are not in downtown. It is a 10 to 15 minute walk for most, but if you have mobility challenges it is worth keeping in mind. The trolley runs from 8 to 8 (roughly), so won't do late night revelers much good. We don't offer a selection of entrees...

You will not find a better breakfast in Portsmouth. Having been the head housekeeper for the Martin Hill Inn, I should know. As I leave the Inn, I wanted to say thank you to all the wonderful guests I have met over the last several years, and to wish Russ and Meg only the best. And,to the incredible Kizmet, I...

First time visit to Martin Hill Inn and Portsmouth. The owners were friendly and helpful with suggestions for dinner and activities available in the area. Wish the weather was more cooperative during our short stay to enjoy the nice garden area. The room was comfortable, beautifully decorated, nothing like a generic hotel room. Breakfast was plentiful and flavorful. There were...

First time in B&B. Loved its location, deco and style. Hosts Russ and his wife were very friendly, breakfast was great (though my boyfriend found it like plastic). Bed is super comfortable, with complimentary sherry and WIFI. What we don't like about the room: 1. Bathroom is tiny, shower is too small that you can hardly turn around. 2. Heater...

I always tell our guests that nothing says "old building" like steep, narrow stairs, but undersized bathrooms may come in a close second. I'm glad the reviewer is sensitive to the limitations of a 200 year old building in a historic zone. If anyone out there has any clever solutions for knocking the shampoo over with your elbow every time...

This was our second time at the Martin Hill Inn and we loved it even more this time around! Stayed in the noonday suite which is very spacious, clean, and comfortable. The staff is so pleasant and even let us check in a little early. The breakfast was delicious!! You can't beat the price here, and it is quite close...

We just returned from a very enjoyable stay in Portsmouth, enhanced by the Martin Hill Inn. We were a little amazed to learn that our hosts had only been with the Inn for a couple weeks!! They certainly landed on their feet. Our room was very comfortable and while we couldn't use the "sunroom" because of the cold, it would...
