Despite the Superior Shores Resort boasting an array of amenities and a prime location for outdoor enthusiasts, travelers express that the value for money falls short, with criticism directed at high costs and dated facilities. The rooms receive a mix of reviews, where some guests enjoy upgrades and views, others are disappointed by cleanliness and unmet expectations.
While the service garners compliments for staff dedication, mixed feelings arise regarding the hotel's atmosphere and the need for modernizing decor. Cleanliness and maintenance are areas highlighted for improvement, although the amenities are generally celebrated.

Detailed Reviews
My husband and I stayed here for our first wedding anniversary. We thought the location was great! It's only about 25 minutes to Duluth, and close to Gooseberry Falls. We had a King bed with a fireplace and a jacuzzi tub. We didn't even use the fireplace, but the jacuzzi tub was super romantic and worth it if you're into that sort of thing.
The room doesn't have the best lighting situation. There was only one lamp on the bedside tables, and only one side had outlets for plugging electronics in. We unplugged the microwave to be able to plug both of our phones in.
We enjoyed the restaurant. With the COVID pandemic, the menu is limited, but the food is good. They also have pizza for room service, but they stop delivering at a certain time.
This was definitely a great place to stay if you want to be right on the water! The beach is nice, and the staff lights campfires near the water during the evening.
We will definitely keep this place on our list for the next time we visit Duluth!

Drove 3 hrs north from where Iive in Wisconsin. I wanted a place with a refr, microwave, and on the water preferred. Two Harbors is a good location, however, next time I will try staying a bit farther up the shoreline. Check-in is 4:00p...and not before. Don't even try. While the resort property is on the shoreline, the buildings are set way back with a wetlands in between. My room was in the 2nd building and on the 2nd floor (there are 3 floors.) And, I had a "handicap" room, (I realized after getting in there altho not requested), except it still has a tub and not a roll-in shower. Room appears to have been repainted, however, I noticed there was not one piece of art or anything hanging on the walls. Furniture is rustic and a bit banged up. View was ok...I watched the birds flitting around the wetlands, however, the water is way far away. I could see it, but if you were on the 1st floor, you could not. My room was quiet, but dated. King sized bed too soft. It seemed clean...until I pulled out the AC/heater unit filters. Yikes, they were dirty. (I left them pulled out.) The room/location worked fine for a home base for me while I went out exploring every day. With the good-sized refrigerator I was able to keep an amount of food and prepare daily meals in microwave. (not wanting to eat out during pandemic) People were required to wear masks inside the building, too.

This was one of our most comfortable stays at Burlington Bay. It was before the start of their busy season, so the resort was quieter. The morning we went swimming, we were the only guests in the pool area. Construction is underway at the property, but we were not disturbed. Lovely views of Lake Superior! The unit could use dining room table chairs that have high backs, as these would be more comfortable, as well as some new living room chairs, preferably with high, straight backs and seats that do not sink low, making it hard to get out of them. We appreciate the carpeting in the living room/dining room as well as bedrooms, as this makes units quieter. Also, the natural pine wood work throughout is beautiful, and accentuates the northwoods feel of the property. The layout of the unit affords privacy to both bedrooms. Gas fireplaces add coziness. When the range is replaced, would suggest a flat cooktop, rather than traditional electric burners, as a flat cooktop is easier to clean. Traditional burners with drip pans often smoke from oils or spilled food residue.

Very disappointed in our stay. We are only one night into our weekend and are leaving early, losing what we paid for the second night.
Definitely will never stay again.
Brandy, who checked us in at the front desk was the most unhelpful, rude person I have ever encountered at a hotel. She clearly does not like her job. I asked if she could print a receipt of our charges and she said no. She could not find our reservation and before checking the spelling of our name, told us we must not know where we are supposed to be.
We were here with a group of families and had reserved a group meeting room for the weekend. The resort general manager threatened to throw away all of our sodas, water and juice. We had arranged to have dinner catered in the community room and were told when we arrived we could have the food, but no drinks, in the community room.
The entire first floor of the resort was flooded, it smelled and the carpet was wet.
Housekeeping was awful, did not clean our kitchen or empty our garbage.
The rooms are outdated and it was impossible to control the temperature. Our room was extremely hot and the room next to us had no heat.
This resort is in need of an ownership and management overhaul. Do not waste your money.

Response from NorthShoreResortCo, Public Relations Manager at Superior Shores Resort
Responded 18 Jan 2020
Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to review Superior Shores. I am very sorry for your experience here. I would like to start by saying that we are in a transition phase. As of January 1st we have new owners and a new Director of Operations. It will be the priority of the new management to ensure that the customer experience comes first. We will be doing additional training with current staff and bringing on new staff as well. I also apologize about the flooding. While that was out of our hands, I realize it was not an ideal way to walk into your vacation. I hope you decide to stay with us again in the future as I am sure you will find the place to be much different next time. Thanks again for your comments. We really appreciate the feedback. We stayed in Unit 19in the “Lakehomes”, a misnomer-they are actually townhouses. Upon entering the unit we were greeted with filth. A brown sticky substance was dripping down the wall in the entryway hall. The carpet in the entire unit was disgustingly stained and dirty. The dishes had dried, crusty food stuck on them. The tub room had a broken light bulb on the floor shattered. The whirlpool tub had a huge panel missing. When we complained to the front desk, we were told that they would send maintenance down to check it out. Later, we were told it was unusable. The Guest Services manager gave us an immediate refund in the amount of half of the first night’s rate, & offered to move us to a 3 bedroom unit in Burlington Bay. We took a family vote & decide to stay being I was already making Lasagna and it would have taken 2 hours to pack, move and unpack. The loft is NOT a “bedroom” at all, it is a sitting area big enough to accommodate a king bed. No closet available and the 1 dresser had 2 of the 3 drawers filled with extra bedding. The upstairs bedroom had twin beds and 1 mattress had collapsed on 1 side making for a very uncomfortable night of trying to sleep! The 4 TV’s in the unit had only 1 remote with batteries. We should have NEVER been placed in this unit! The $1162.00 ( $479 per night plus resort fees and taxes) charge for 2 nights was outrageous for the accommodations we were provided. There were NO photos of this unit on their website when I booked back on Oct. 4th.

Pros:
The rooms were clean and tastefully decorated, and the Jacuzzi tubs were nice. Bathrobes were a nice touch. The view was amazing. There was a playground for the kids.
Cons:
We reserved a 3 bedroom chalet with a king and 2 queen beds. Instead, we got a 2 bedroom suite and a single room. Instead of a queen, we got 2 twin beds. They tried to tell us it was a 3 bedroom chalet, but it was just a suite and a room, both with locking doors, sharing a common foyer. They even had their own room numbers. Clearly the staff didn't see it as a 3 bedroom chalet either, since they came through the outer door and then knocked on the inner door.
They appeared to be short staffed, which meant we were not able to check in until after 8pm. The lobby was full of angry people not able to check in. We had 3 towels for 6 people, and when we asked for more, we were told that they had to wait for laundry to be done. The towels were delivered the next day. There were dishes in the dishwasher when we arrived. When special requests were solicited before arrival, we requested extra pillows, which were not provided.
If this had been a lower priced facility, that would be one thing. But for almost $900/night, I expected more. We were never offered any kind of discount for the inconveniences. We will not be back.

We've been spending Christmas at Superior Shores in Two Harbors for over 20 years. We heard there were new owners, so we were excited, given the slowly declining facilities over the years, but were shocked with the prices when we called. Last year we spent 3 nights in a Superior one-bedroom suite (you have to have a kitchen since there's no restaurants open on Christmas), and we paid $400 including everything, admittedly a good deal, but this time of year there are only a handful of rooms rented out. When we called this year, we were quoted, all in, $1,200. We even talked to a manager who couldn't have cared less that we've been going there for 20+ years. She offered to drop the price by $120, or 10%, but wouldn't do anything about the almost $40 a night in "resort fees" which she said is for "bonfires on the beach, hot chocolate in the lobby, and a skating rink." Really? For $120 I can buy a lot of hot chocolate, and with COVID I don't think we'd be engaging in any social activities. She also couldn't guarantee that we would get an updated room. I get that the prices had to go up, but a 300% increase in one year? There are better places for much cheaper, and the attitude I got was kind of like, "we really would rather not have you if you can't pony up $400 a night for a room." I guess we're starting a new tradition.

We stayed in Burlington Bay. I was with my two teenage sons so we had a 2 bedroom lakeside condo. Our view was amazing. It was amazing the temperature difference when you got closer to the water. The resort had friendly employees who always answered our questions. Just like every other place right now, they say they are short staffed so there is not daily housecleaning services. You have to call front desk for what you need and either pick it up or have it delivered to your room. The Northshore area is beautiful and there were plenty of sites within driving distance to see to keep us busy. Walking around the property it seemed that they were working on upgrading Burlington Bay. We had 2 requests for maintenance to fix in our condo that never got done while we were there. Hopefully they will be before the next guests arrived. Burlington Bay lakeside was beautiful and our condo was spacious. It was pricey. We did not eat at the on-site restaurant as the prices were very high buy we found lots of other good places to eat within driving distance

The rates they charge are high enough that one would expect top quality facilities and service. The service we received was subpar. A request for towels to be delivered at 10:30 resulted in towels delivered after 2pm. The old dirty towels were not taken away. I also had to make multiple requests for Nespresso pods and cups and in the end, I never even received more cups. The room was also disappointing. The window was broken, it would open but not close. The remote control for the tv did not work. The bed was warped and sunk in the middle. The amenities were also in need of repair. The outdoor hot tub was missing many tiles and pieces of concrete which scratch you as you try to sit and enjoy the water. The jets outside did not work, except for one and the lounge furniture was all frayed and in very poor condition. It was also advertised that there should be a fire pit at the Burlington location, but there was not. Overall, the fees I paid for the room were quite high and I do not feel the value for money was provided. I emailed them with my experience and now aver a week later I still haven’t gotten a response. Very disappointing!

Checkin was delayed over two hours because housekeeping was “behind”. Irritating, but excusable given the lingering effects of Covid. But the room was a disaster. The carpet was very worn and stained, in particular one spot that looked like a bottle of red wine had sat and soaked in for a long time. The furniture was uncomfortable and worn. Also very torn. I’m sure the chairs and sofa had at one time been very nice. We have stayed at Burlington Bay multiple times and loved it. The layout is great, and the view is perfect. But this room (bldg 3, room 203) was pretty disgusting. This is never a cheap place to stay, so I would say this time our expectations were not met; not even close. We hoped to eat at the main lodge restaurant after a long drive, only to be informed it was undergoing remodeling. This most certainly should have been prominently mentioned on the website. It wasn’t mentioned at all. We were missing basic items, like dish soap and a dish towel. I will say the staff was very nice and apologetic, but that can only go so far. For the first time ever, I can no longer recommend Superior Shores Resort.

I would suggest calliing the resort and they can tell you what rooms for pets are available for the date of your travel.
Hi Daybreak,
Thank you for bringing this up! We certainly don't want our potential guests to have an experience with any less than excellent customer service. So, I will endeavor to track down and speak with the agent you spoke with, to make sure this doesn't happen again. Now about your question, I believe this is the best place to stay, so I can't help you on that one - but there are very nice places up and down the shore, from Duluth to Grand Marais. Please enjoy your trip Up North, wherever you stay :)
Hi Gigsby53,
We do have a select number of dog friendly rooms - we have rooms with two beds, a single king bed, or one bedroom suites. We do have a $15/night pet fee. You will sign a pet contract at check-n as well (just to acknowledge our pet policies).
Hope this helps!
Some units allow dogs...I think it is $30/night. When you look online at the units it will specifically say if dogs are allowed. Dogs are allowed in the main lodge area and throughout the grounds.
