I stayed solo for one night in June. A little tucked away in the midst of the Vosges, but with a map/GPS and plenty of roadside signage it can be found! Isolated in the midst of the woods, with plenty of marked walks radiating from the car park. Not quite sure what to make of Patrick the proprietor! Seemed to perfectly understand my English e mails whilst booking direct, but always replied in French - fortunately my very basic schoolboy French sufficed. Perhaps he uses a Google translator! He’s a quirky but friendly character who did engage with French as above. The evening meal was prepared by him - the kitchen aromas promising good things throughout the afternoon. The delightfully cheeky young lady who seemed to do everything - waitress and cleaner etc - was great fun, despite the obvious language barrier. The auberge is fascinatingly quirky in a very individual rustic style - difficult to describe - but I loved it. My family room was large, clean and comfortable with a decent bathroom - plenty of space if required. The fine weather allowed meals (apparently all local produce) to be taken outside - a basic, but very tasty salad lunch followed by an excellent table d’hote dinner (no mains choice) . The indoor dining room looked very welcoming, and on the Saturday night I stayed a Jazz/Blues combo was playing - sounded good from outside! Breakfast was the most basic I’ve ever been offered - bread, preserves and cheese. Did the job, all local produce, but limited. Average value for money - the quirkiness would mean a return visit if in the area again.

The property is in a beautiful place, with good walks in the woods immediately accessible. Moreover the two ladies who work there tried their best to make up for the rudeness of the proprietor, and the coffee at breakfast was excellent. The service was incredibly slow and it appeared that they had been dealing with a large party at lunchtime that had put their operations out of joint. But instead of apologizing, the owner completely ignored the unhappy guests (of whom the couple on the next table were even more unhappy than we were) and acted as if all was normal. On top of this, our bed was far too short (I am not a tall man, but my feet hung completely over the end), the whole house was a mess and the breakfast (with the exception of the coffee) was the poorest I have seen in France in a long time. But the owner acted throughout as if we should consider it a privilege to be there. We rarely make a bad review, but there was too much negative energy to ignore here. Basil Fawlty is not funny when you encounter him for real.

Response from patrick C, Propriétaire at Auberge de la Cholotte

The location is excellent. Not ideal for a younger party going crowd I suppose, but if you value fantastic scenery, an authentic traditional French hotel, excellent food, and a genuine French family hosting your stay, then this could be the place for you. It's a very old building, the grounds are astonishingly beautiful. Set up in the Vosges mountains, the roads to it are twisty and great for motorcyclists. The hotel is set at the end of a lane, right up in the forestry of the mountains, but it's well signposted from the main road (420). As you arrive in the car park you will feel as if you've wandered onto a film set. Disney can't make a film set this perfect. Our hosts, who also live with their family at the hotel, were really friendly and helpful. I honestly think that this place is the best hotel that I have ever stayed at, and it was the perfect setting to wake up on my fiftieth birthday!

Hotel is in beautiful wooded setting with lovely gardens and good walks from the door. Some areas inside are a little dark but our comfortable, no frills room was light and pleasant with very nice view of the garden. Enjoyable home cooked evening meal. This is a nice, homely hotel which was very quiet when we stayed although we understand they do have events such as live music at times. It has the potential to be even better eg we found the breakfast a bit disappointing in comparison to other places we have stayed for a similar or lower price - good quality local cheeses, jams, bread, juice and coffee but would have expected more choice eg fruit, yogurts etc. Would recommend to people looking for a calm and peaceful setting particularly if they enjoy walking.

Nor will you find a TV or hairdryer in your room and La Cholotte is more guest house than hotel so adjust your expectations, relax and you will have a wonderful time! The proprietors, Patrick and Angelika, are generous and friendly hosts. Our room was spacious, comfortable and clean. The food was very good and the portions generous but if absence of choice is a concern and you have a particular dietary requirement, it might be sensible to contact the proprietors and asking if they can accommodate your needs. Most of the ingredients are sourced within twenty miles or so of La Cholotte, something the proprietors are rightly very proud of. We would certainly recommend the three milk cheese from a producer in Taintrux, just down the road. The service is relaxed and if you want a beer you may have to go and find someone to serve you. That can be difficult, I know, as most of us are used to having hotel staff at our beck and call, but it is far less stressful than sitting wondering if you are ever going to be served ... if you want something you just have to ask! The hotel is in a very quiet location and is well situated for walking in the Haut Vosges or visiting the wine region of the Alsace and we can recommend visiting the garden of Berchigranges. The hotel also hosts events for local groups so you might be advised to check what else is happening during your visit. We were there for five nights and would certainly stay there again.
