Svatma is more than a highly individualistic travel destination. Designed by and for exacting individuals with Spirit - it is the epitome of Tamil culture and art evolved into a space-time capsule of mystique and allure. It is the indescribable romance of contemporary artists flirting with curated antiques and experimenting with ancient art forms in a space resonating with the chanting of Vedas.

Svatma hotel delivers an experience steeped in old-world charm and traditional ambiance that many guests appreciate, particularly noting the period furniture and antique decor. However, some travelers have expressed concerns about rooms that could benefit from renovation and improved lighting, despite others finding them clean and well-appointed. While the hotel's amenities like the spa and quiet rooms generally receive positive remarks, the high prices for food, drinks, and services have not gone unnoticed, with several guests questioning the overall value for money. Service quality seems to be a hit or miss, with reports of both attentive staff and disorganization.

Svatma came highly recommended from friends who stayed there previously. We booked 2 family rooms for our stay. We were welcomed in the traditional South Indian Tamilnadu style. The rooms were very spacious and comfortable. All modern facilities required were in it. They had kept some very tasty savouries in our rooms which we finished quickly and asked them to replace. They had placed water and the savouries in the common corridors too which anyone could pick when they pass by. Great idea. They serve pure vegetarian food. Food is very tasty. Their home style thali is a must try. Their service is very good. Staff are very helpful and always greet you with a smile. The kids enjoyed the pool. The ladies enjoyed the Spa. The men went to the roof top bar. They had everything for a family like us to enjoy. Amazing Hotel!

Stayed two nights here as we traveled through southeast India. Note: kitchen only prepares vegetarian dishes and no alcohol is served at the hotel. Was a very enjoyable and comfortable respite from our days' travels. Helpful staff, very relaxing pool with chaise lounges standing in water with waterfalls calming sounds. Relaxing, enjoyable, comfortable. We also enjoyed listening both nights to a live musical recital with the traditional India veena instrument. Most enjoyable.

We took four rooms at Svatma in the last week of December with four families ranging from senior citizens to children. Firstly the good points. The hotel is obviously tuned more to the international traveller. The continental menu choices were really tasty - the kinds really enjoyed them. In fact, overall the food was excellent including the Tanjore thali which we had for lunch one day. Its just a 20 minute walk to the Big Temple and the hotel is well located so you can go down to the Tanjore palace in a similar time. Rooms are well designed and beautifully furnished, staff are friendly.

Things to improve. Service staff need to be trained; looked like lot of recently recruited staff from outside Tamil Nadu who were struggling to understand some of the requests. A'la carte service in the dinner time was extremely slow. The breakfast buffet was repetitive - we had three consecutive days with hardly couple of items being changed each day. Parking area is small, in fact one may have to remove other vehicles to take out your own car if parked at the end. They do not have any facility for driver stay which is a bit of a problem considering a lot of people drive down to Thanjavur. That said they had a tie up with a nearby hotel to accomodate drivers but one payment basis. The swimming pool is just a large tub - push from one side and you reach the other end.

Overall it is a good place to stay in Thanjavur but does not provide the level of service and hospitality commensurate with the room rates charged.

We stayed two nights at the Svatma. I had been really looking forward to it after viewing their website. However we were disappointed by the rather cool reception and the very dark room which needed the lights on all the time - there was only one small window.
We had an uncomfortable meal in the gloomy dining room, service was slow and unfriendly. All vegetarian. I had hoped to have a thali as featured on the website but they were only served at lunchtime. Breakfast in the same room was good (although still gloomy). As it was a 'dry day' there was no alcohol and the bar was closed.
We did come back for a late lunch and had our thali in the verandah restaurant which was much brighter and warmer, very good service here. We ate there in the evening too instead of the main dining room.
We would have liked to sit outside in the gardens but couldn't find any seats in the sun. We also wanted to try the pool but there were only 2 loungers, both occupied and nowhere to sit - the pool is mainly indoors and not very enticing.
We were very disappointed with our stay.

This was one of the most expensive hotels on our trip to India. It was also one of the most disappointing.

Our room was tired and bland. The food in the restaurant was pleasant for lunch and dinner (with attentive staff) but continental (vegan) breakfast was very poor.

The pool is much smaller then the photos suggest and located in quite a public area.

We had pre booked (and paid a deposit for) a tour with a guide to temples outside Tanjore. This hadn’t in fact been arranged by the hotel and so we ended up visiting a couple of sites in the hotel car instead.

No complete itemised bill was available at check out for some reason. So we picked up that we were being charged for the complimentary massages included in our package, but failed to realise that we had still been charged the full price for the guided tour.

The hotel had also arranged a car to Chettinad and initially we left with a driver who had no idea where he was going, drove ridiculously fast and ( it turned out) had no petrol in the car. He eventually took us back to the hotel where we requested another driver. At this point we were given a refund of some of the charges we had paid for transport but it was really too little too late.

I think part of the problem is that this hotel is not well set up for independent travellers. Those in a group or visiting with a guide and car probably fare better. But the fact is it was very poor value.

The massages in the spa were however excellent.

Svatma is beautifully restored and well maintained property
However the service leaves a lot to be desired. Dinner menus that are planned for a very evolved vegetarian palate is at best quite inconsistently imaginative and on one night their fixed dinner buffet left diners who wished to go for the ala carte with nothing but the very ordianry buffet. No Ala Carte was offered
Five star prices for restricted dining options is not the best way to claim the description of the most most tasetefully adorned hotel in Thanjavur
TV channels printed on their in room announcement were not available. They had omitted to add them
Exhaust above the rooms needed to be cleared since it emitted musty air before the ACs were switched on
So a lovely property that needs to raise the bar on some crucial aspects of service and be diligent and pay attention to the finer details

It has a potential to to improve and this will then truly be the gem in Thanjavur

Nice entrance but looks deceived. Room 101 was small, without a view (the window overlooked a tin roof and the usual backyard trash) with a dimly-lit shower with unmarked Hot/Cold faucets and a very slippery shower floor. There was no minibar in the room but there was a roof terrace (finding it is tricky as it's unmarked -- look for a narrow staircase going up), but it was so noisy with street sounds and so hot, we gave up and sat inside. And the bar prices, which looked reasonable on the price list, were jacked up when the bill was submitted by a 58% 'TAX on foreign brands' ++ all of which was well hidden on the price list, almost doubling the expected price. Intentional or not, who is to say? Other hotels quote prices that include the local taxes. My advice is to ask in every bar in India: "Are the taxes included? Is this the final price?" The restaurant is totally Indian vegetarian (so not even eggs are available), but there was western bread for toasting and fresh fruit.

From the website it looks like you are entering a haven of luxury, relaxation and calm, but nothing could be further from the truth and the skilful online marketing of this hotel is its key strength.
The problem is simple. This is the only hotel for miles around and its clients are tour groups passing through. Guests arrive in the evening and leave in the morning, so the whole philosophy and service level of this hotel has gravitated to what it is, namely, an overnight service station for passing travellers. Bed linen smells, bathroom smells, swimming pool is situated in a public thoroughfare so its for show, not relaxation and calm. Everything has been reduced to the basic cost saving minimum across the hotel which is grubby, tired and un-loved.
The restaurant is functional buffet style and staff work hard to please. Massages in the Spa are outstanding, but if you ask for a candle on your rooftop table, a large plastic battery candle arrives and this sums it up. Relais Chateau rating is bizarre and wholly misleading.
So, if you are passing through and need a bed, fine. If you want a luxury invigorating experience do what everyone else does; move on.

The food is a big plus at Svatma. The daily thalis they serve and the buffet breakfast are ultimate in looks and tastes. Arun Tony at the restaurant and Balaji at the reception I would say are the pillars of Svatma. I have always seen them at the hotel may be it is day or night or midnight or early morning. They are the best assets to Svatma. Kudos to both

The minus are the rooms especially the toilets. None of the shower or hand shower are working well especially with the hot water 💦 supply. Even wash basin hot water supply is a drawback. My first room was not okay and they changed me to a much bigger room but still the same issue . Toilets positioning of health faucet and toilet 📜 papers are not perfect. Room service is not there except for tea or coffee as the reason given was the room will smell if food is served. I don't know if a gym is existing as never visited. Svatma classified as a five star heritage property with the above drawbacks with the exhorbitant price charged per room is not justified. Hope the Management takes care of the above drawbacks quickly. My best wishes to the entire team at Svatma and my special thanks to Arun Tony and Balaji who took really great care of us during our stay

The staff are very eager to do well, polite and helpful.
The pool is original, though to relax in an armchair you have to get your feet wet. The nearby restaurant is very good. Both chef and waiters do their best and with gentle persuasion they will go easy on the fiery local spices……
The rooms are clean both in the old part of the building and in the new section.
The manager - he did not bother to introduce himself with a name - is a talkative fellow who claims a hotel management degree from a hotel school in Lucern, Switzerland.
May be, but if so, he still has a steep learning curve ahead of him: inexcusably considering how cheap and available staff is in India, he clearly fails to train and instruct properly.
My room was partly unclean (the sofa had known better days…). The TV did not work and was not fixed during my stay. There was no hair dryer (it was delivered upon request), no paper basket, etc., clearly showing that the standard check list for a room had not been followed. The shutters needed fixing, among other things.
In the restaurant, the toast machine simply quit, cups were missing, etc.
The traces and impact of haphazard management are all over the place (I happened to have been president of a Swiss hotel for 20 years).
This is a place in which, in other words, the staff labors to do a good job and would do a lot better if the manager knew what he is supposed to do.
