The only nightly lodging on Perkins Cove. All our renovated rooms offer great views of the Cove and are a very short walking distance to the shops and restaurants in the Cove and the start of the Marginal Way.

Detailed Reviews
Ever since I was three years okd, I have been coming to this hotel/motel. Originally called The Riverside, it is now Auberge at the Cove, and run by a different group from the original family. However, it is just as wonderful as it always was, and nicely updated. The footprint is that of a traditional motel: drive in and park right outside your unit. Very convenient!
Part of me misses the retro tile furnishings, but the rainforest shower in the bathroom was great. A hand held wand option would be nice, but surprisingly few places, even five star hotels, have these, and I do not know why!
Spacious closet, mini fridge, and windows that open to the sea breezes compliment the blue and beige natural color scheme with a vaguely French feel. At this level of hostelry ( upscale luxury motel) bathrobes and slippers are not expected, at least by me, and are not provided. There is however, an iron, and a hair dryer and amenities in the bath.
My only complaint, and it was the same prior to the new ownership and redecoration, is that the balcony lights, which certainly look very pretty, and are a safety measure, shine in through the window blinds, and make the room uncomfortably light for me. The easy solution is to hang a towel over the blinds to block the light. It works, but it would be great if there were a shade as well as blinds on the balcony door, which is where the light shines in. Some units may not have this issue, depending on the placement if the light outside.
Adorably, the original metal sign on the balcony has been retained, although comfy new wooden adirondack chairs are on the balcony now rather than the old plastic tube and metal chairs. The sign’s misspelled ‘swimware’ has also not been altered:’please do not hang towels or swimware from the balcony’ LOL. It did not annoy me, as most orthographical errors in such a situation would. Rather, it made me smile—a link to my chilhood.
The Auberge’s location is ideal: a few steps away from the charming footbridge...the only operational one in the eastern US...and from Perkins Cove central. Shops, restaurants, artists’ galleries, and the start of the Marginal Way! Beaches along the Way bring you to the ocean, and in normal times the sweet little trolleys operate between Perkins Cove, Ogunquit, and Wells. This means your vehicle gets a holiday, too! You can take the trolley in to Ogunquit or Wells to shop or eat, and take it to the further beaches too. The trolleys are not running just now, but walking into Ogunquit is only the matter of a bit more than a mile.
Auberge’s housekeeping staff is accommodating and cheerful, as is their front desk staff. The units are spotlessly clean, everything works as it should, and my only hesitancy in posting such a glowing review is that too many people will read it and discover this hidden gem, which has been my special retreat for all my life.

We have stayed at Auberge, and previously The Riverside, for the last 15 years. Last year was the first since the property's make over. The owners have done a wonderful job of updating the overall look of the property while keeping the 'coastal vibe' that has had us returning year after year. Our return visit this year has us facing changes brought about by COVID-19 restrictions. The Auberge had a plan in place to handle the cleaning and linen/towels that was very practical and we were quite happy with the results. A laundry bag was left at you door each morning with all the towels, soap and toiletries you would need. In the evening you would put any soiled or wet items in the laundry bag, put it outside, and in the morning there would be a new bag with all new supplies. Worked great. Unfortunately they could not offer their continental breakfast, which we so look forward to, but that allowed us to sample some early morning dinning at some of the local restaurants that were able to offer breakfast. So a bit of a win for us. We didn't have much interaction with the staff since everything was being handled very efficiently. We had a little problem with the TV the first day and no sooner did I call the office to let them know, there was a knock on the door, a staff member checked the TV, and problem solved. I have stated in the previous reviews that this location is outstanding. Sitting on the porch looking out at Perkins Cove is something that never grows old. Shopping, dinning, Marginal Way, boating excursions are all a very short walk across the footbridge that connects the Auberge to the excitement of Perkins Cove and downtown Ogunquit.
We plan on returning in 2021 (our 16th, I believe) with the hopes that life will be a lot less stressful.

Stayed here a few times when it was the Riverside Motel. Now that the place has been renovated some and turned into Auberge on the Cove, we tried it again. The room upgrades are clearly helpful - new flooring, wall paneling, beds, and walk-in showers. Very nice, although the non-alignment of the bed with the shelf high above it indicates mistakes were made. No breakfast is provided even though other hotels in the area now offer breakfast despite the pandemic. This visit was unfortunately marred by annoying guests in a neighboring room, handled poorly by the hotel office. The rates here are now premium, which is ok for the quality of room, but not for the annoyance.

Response from James Beetz, General Manager at Auberge on the Cove

Hi Folks, we're sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your stay as much as you had your previous visits with us, but pleased to hear that you enjoyed the renovated rooms. We appreciate you bringing the mantle/shelf issue to our attention as well. With each room having unique salvaged antique architectural pieces like that shelf, they all require different mounting and hanging. You can see from our web pictures that this particular mantle is unique and will definitely need some attention. As soon we we close for the season at the end of October we will be sure to re-mount it. We hope to see you again in the future, and thank you for taking the time to leave us a review!

I can’t quite put my finger on my dissatisfaction. It might be that we had had such a thoughtfully designed room in Portsmouth before we came here, that the small deficiencies of Auberge loomed larger in my mind. First, the reception person was not very friendly or at all helpful at check in. No offer of a map or explanation of the area. Just not very welcoming. I also feel that the covid excuse for no breakfast is just an excuse when they have an outdoor area that could be used for dining. When I asked for more coffee packets, I received them…but no more cups. We had the Captains House room 53, which is large. It actually has two bathrooms, which is nice since there is absolutely no room for toiletries in the bathroom. Very frustrating. Also, a rainhead shower is nice, but without a hand held sprayer, it just doesn’t get the job done, if you know what I mean. The couch and bed were comfortable. We heard every step of the people upstairs, as well as their conversation. It would have been nice to have someplace to hang our coats or put our keys and purse…there was plenty of room, but no thought to where to put furniture or how people live. It was clean and the view was nice, though not as nice as the hotel part. The light in the vestibule was motion controlled, which was not necessary. There is an outdoor area, but we weren’t really sure if it was ours or shared. I guess if I had to do it over I would not choose to stay in Perkins Cove, but would rather stay closer to town and just visit here once…it is a rather long walk into town, and at night be sure to use the Perkins Cove road over the drawbridge instead of the Shore Road, which is too dangerous ( another tip the reception person could have given).

Hi Folks, I'm sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay in our Captain's House. There are certainly positives and negatives with staying in Perkins Cove as opposed to up in the the Village, and they are worth looking into before you choose one or the other for your getaway. While we are further from the Beach and the congested center of town, many of our guests enjoy being only a few minutes walk from the restaurants and shops in the Cove and start of the Marginal Way walking path. As the only lodging in town at the Cove we feel privileged to be able to offer it's convenience and views to our guests. For people reading your review curious about our Captain's House, it has only 3 suites in the entire building, one on each floor with a shared deck that wraps around the entire building on the first floor and a small upper landing available only to room 53. The completely renovated lower two suites, 51 and 53, also have two closets in which to store clothing, purses or coats. Each suite offers full views of the Cove and the footbridge that crosses the Cove. 55, our top floor penthouse, can see all the way to Kennebunk on a clear day! If your travels bring you back to this part of Southern Maine, I hope you enjoy your stay with us or at one of the other hotels in town.

Stayed in the Boat House at the Auberge on the Cove all was remodeled to look' beachy", mission accomplished. We have stayed in the past ( many years when it was the Riverside) and love being in Perkins Cove, the location is ideal, sit on the deck and watch the boats, visitors, seagulls, and ocean go by as you have a cup of coffee or a cocktail. So easy to walk over the pedestrian bridge to stroll, walk the Marginal Way to town, have lunch, have dinner and shop in Perkins Cove. Even with the pandemic all was good, missed the continental breakfast and the daily housekeeping but the staff would clean if you wanted and getting new linens and towels was a breeze. With the refrigerator in the room all we needed was a trip to the grocery and breakfast was "in room". Our only negative was one of our neighbors was rather loud and you could hear them walking but that was not the fault of the hotel, not sure how they could diminish the noise plus if you were staying for a longer time needed a larger dresser to store your items. We LOVE staying here and hope to be able to return for many more years. We say book it.

My wife and I had a very relaxing time at Auberge on the picturesque Perkins Cove. We stay here whenever we visit Ogunquit, and always have a great time. The room was bright and comfortable, and the balcony offered overlooks of both the peaceful cove and the ocean beyond. The front desk folks (James Deb, and Laura) are very pleasant and accommodating. Once the car was parked it stayed that way since we were able to walk to the shops and restaurants of Perkins Cove as well as the downtown. Walking Marginal Way and enjoying the views of the rocky coast as well as breathing the fresh salt air is totally invigorating. We would recommend Auberge to anyone looking for a relaxing great time!

Memorable! Fresh, clean, breath of fresh air experience. Friendly welcoming vibe starts from the attentive and receptive welcome to the great interiors. We were ever so pleased & highly recommend this experience, especially during these times, when you can drive right up to your front door and feel safe. A treasure.

I feel so blessed to have found this place. My in laws never get away. They had a tough week and finally took a last minute trip. Planning did not go into this and they ended up at a motor inn on a busy street in Kittery for the first night. They were in a bad state of mind and honestly, we felt badly that they were starting their trip out on the wrong foot.
We made a bunch of calls and this was the first place that has availability. I didn’t realize what a gem I was booking at the time!
James, (GM) was super helpful and accommodating as he listened to my/our needs over the phone. He provided recommendations for a local florist and gift basket service and ensured the basket made it into their room.
My in laws’ disposition literally changed within an hour of arrival. My father in law loved the balcony and Adirondack chairs with harbor view. They were so close to everything they were able to walk many places without worrying about parking, traffic or enjoying a cocktail with dinner. They enjoyed a lobster at the Lobster Shack and by the end of the first night, they were sending us photos via text message of relaxation and enjoyment.
Perfect location, clean, great pricing, no hidden fees, staff was awesome to deal with. Highly grateful and we thank you so much for your hospitality, James!

Since being renamed from Riverside Motel, L'Auberge has gone through some very nice improvements to the rooms. Of course, being right across from Perkin's Cove is a real plus. However, there is almost no staff. Our room was not made up one day with no explanation, even though the door tag was left on the door that the room was ready to be cleaned.
Also, breakfast is no longer served and the coffee is not ready until 8:00 AM, which is way too late.
Understandably, help is hard to find these days, but I think the new owners should try a little harder.

Hi Effie, we're sorry to hear your recent stay with us wasn't everything you had wanted. As a small, 40 unit seasonal, coastal property we do keep a small staff, but as long as guests are able to let us know they want service for their rooms while the housekeepers are working between 9am and 2pm, we have not had any issues seeing that the rooms are taken care of. Even outside those hours, office staff is always happy to provide fresh linens and other items for the rooms. We are sorry not to offer the breakfast this year, but as all our confirmations mention this year and last, this is more a reflection of concerns for staff and guests than an understaffing issue. We do offer grab and go coffee and tea each morning in our office from 8am to 11am, but as your review does not mention, each room has a coffee maker, coffee and coffee supplies in the event guests want to enjoy a cup outside of those hours. That said, we are delighted to hear that you have enjoyed the numerous improvements that have been made to the property during the complete renovation of the rooms as most of our other guests have. Thank you for choosing us for your Perkins Cove getaway in Ogunquit.

Have stayed there many times when it was Riverside. First stay since the change in ownership. We enjoy the location just across the bridge from Perkins Cove. The rooms have been redone and are very light, bright, and airy with a very clean feel to them. Overall a very good experience.
Two small items. We both prefer thinner pillows than what were in the room but none were available when we asked. We also wish that they still did a continental breakfast.
