Would have been a grand house in its day but needs lots of work to update. There was a big foam pad for a mattress topper. Just didn’t feel very clean. New owners need some experience, check in was disorganized. No Wi-Fi password provided at check in, had to go ask the bartender later. The yoga experience and evening dining is where the bulk of effort goes. Food was really good but not our style to spend 2 hours eating, 15-20 minutes between courses. And don’t really like dogs sitting at my table. Least favorite lodging experience out of the 4 Inns we stayed at over our 10 day trip. The rest were wonderful on all points. We wouldn’t stay here again

We were attending an event nearby and really needed a place to stay with our 2 small dogs. We arrived on a Friday and were informed that since it was under renovation construction noise was to be expected. And it was. Not a real problem but the room in "the barn" was sparse to say the least. One chair, one old creaky bed, a decent bathroom but no mirror. Nice if you don't want to see what you look like in the morning but a real problem if you want to attend an event and look halfway decent. No tv. Normally, not an issue but our 1000 Island cottage doesn't have one so was looking forward to a bit of vacuous viewing. No fridge. There was a wonderful modern air conditioner. Bring earplugs if you are on the first floor as the noises people make upstairs are horrendous, we were awakened both nights at 2:00 am from stomping or bed jumping. Went on for a good hour. A "quiet hours" post would be helpful but the people who were staying there and probably had the entire house ()and a couple of "cheap rooms" in the barn area )were bigwig wealthy types so anything went. It's got a new major yoga studio so go figure on the quiet time aspect. $200.00 a night seems quite exorbitant for what we had. We've stayed in some really swell places for that amount of money; this wasn't one.

We spent a few nights the week after Christmas in order to visit our son and celebrate his birthday. We all enjoyed a fine dinner Inn-side that first night, served beautifully in one of the spacious parlours of the original house. Our room #4 in main house was well appointed with comfortable king bed. Our room was a tad warm; we attribute this to heating systems in an old home and cracking the window was an easy solution. The bathroom could have used more top space - perhaps a small rectangular spindle legged table (painted white) next to sink for our dopp kits. None of the plumbing fixtures, tubs, sinks we saw were original to the home, which is a/n (understandable) shame. However, spend time to take in and appreciate the craftsmanship, architecture and timeless beauty of this lovely former home. The elegant tall glassed pocket doors on first floor, the beautiful floors with their fabulous, planked detail, period fireplace mantles, the grand original entryway, with plenty of big airy windows, some with with seating. Take the wide staircase up to 2nd floor to find another lovely sitting area with lots of light and reading nooks. Owner John was extremely gracious and helpful. Barkeep Mike also cheery and welcoming. We enjoyed our stay and recommend this Inn and Restaurant to those looking for a respite from condo or hotel options. The Inn on Winter's Hill is truly a gem.

I don't know how to say this, but I was stunned by the extent to which the overall TripAdvisor rating differed from my experience here. Granted, I suspect my experience is unusual, but still. I should say that I got the least expensive room in the house: a no-frills (really, they mean no-frills) room on the bottom floor of the barn. That's fine. All I need is clean and quiet; however, on both fronts the Inn on Winter's Hill just failed. First, let's talk about a little false advertising: the inn's website needs to take breakfast available off its website. It's not. OK? Good. Second, noise issues. I could hear all too well what was going on in my neighbors' rooms (dogs and all), especially the obnoxious dinging of incoming text messages late at night. A towel under the door didn't help, so I turned on the bathroom fan, which was fine--although it also meant a light was on, and the bathroom door didn't actually close, so no matter what you get light coming into the bed. This said, the fan did its white noise job. Let's talk about cleanliness. This room was bizarrely disappointing. There was a hole in the quilt, some long-stale stain on one of the blankets, and the floor was just dirty. Walk barefoot and you have to wipe your feet off by the time you cross the room. Poor attention to detail on the cleanliness front, including a spider in the bathroom whose web appeared to have been there for quite a while. The fixtures are clearly long in the tooth. Just look at the photo of the toilet paper dispenser. What in the heck is going on there? The radiator is all rusty, the faucet and sink drain were as well. The towels also struck me as low-quality. I feel as though a place that prided itself on true attention to detail would not let any of this stand, when it comes to the "cheap" rooms. The staff was very nice (I trust they were vaccinated since they were not wearing masks), despite an odd mix-up that I will decline to get into because I trust that it was unique; however, that was not enough to make up for a stay where it was difficult to feel as though I was in good hands. Sorry. I hope other rooms aren't like this, but it's important that you be aware of my experience here.

Thanks for your honest and well-worded appraisal. I am so sorry to hear about the obvious flaws you encountered, and I apologize sincerely for the deprivation. Certainly we should have not added to the insult by charging you for this poor treatment, but I am guessing no one knew about it until reading your review. We have a satisfaction guarantee, so just call me and I will issue a refund. Your comments provide us with quite a list of things to address, no comfort to you, perhaps, but bringing this shocking combination of failures to our attention will clearly help the next guest who might otherwise suffer the same lousy treatment. Again, please accept my apologies and get in touch with me for a refund. No one should have to pay for this treatment. john

My parents and I stayed at the inn for a week while visiting family in the area. We had a very comfortable stay in two adjoining rooms on the first floor of the "barn." The owner John accommodated our every need including setting up a table in one of our rooms so that we could work at a laptop. Both rooms were spacious and decorated with Maine period pieces. Ensuite bathrooms provided maximum privacy. The beds were fine albeit a bit squeaky. The walls can be a little thin depending upon occupancy, but easily resolved with ear plugs. Bathrooms were stocked with soap, shower gel shampoo, conditioner, etc. Even though we visited in July, the open windows were quite satisfactory for cool airflow. The housekeeper Marnie checked in with us everyday, and like John, accommodated our every need. The common living and bar area is the BEST. I enjoyed morning coffee with my laptop looking out the picture window behind the bar. The furnishings are eclectic interesting almost like a Maine museum or flea market. Although breakfast and lunch aren't served, you can arrange dinner - John is the chef. We had a lovely HOMEMADE meal of fabulous handkerchief pasta with ragu, steak, broccoli rabe and foccacia bread. If you're in the Kingfield area, we highly recommend the Inn for accommodations and/or drinks and dinner. They even run a weekly, well-attended karaoke night. Count us in the Inn's fan club.

Wife and I stayed here June 2021. The place is clean, comfortable and worth the price. In my opinion, you will not make a mistake choosing to stay here! Bar on premise serves great cocktails. Room was beautifully appointed with period furniture. We would definitely stay here AGAIN and AGAIN.

This Inn was featured on TV: Living in Maine. We watched on a Saturday night in April, were impressed, checked out the Western Maine proximity, only a two hour drive due north, and on Sunday morning we hit the road. Just like that on a lark! Since it was April, the place was nearly empty and we got a gorgeous room on the spot. With great weather we walked all around the area, found an automobile restoration garage down the hill, and enjoyed the scenery. Come evening a nice surprise: with masks n we entered a real bar, with cheerful people and superb cocktails! Then Innkeeper John, using the menu name Gianni, went beyond mixology to provide superb food: rare, yes rare, no kidding rare steak with grilled vegetables. This Inn is a winner.

I stayed here last weekend on a bit of a whim, prior to getting in a warm April ski day at Sugarloaf. I booked a king room in the "house" (which seems well worth the modest premium over the barn). The room itself was satisfactory: the linens, towels, and toiletries were all hotel-quality, the fixtures were good, the wifi was good enough for Zoom calls, and I was surprised to see robes in the closet, nice touch. There was some dust around the edges but not anywhere you'd stick your face. The house itself is fun to walk through and there is a nice seating area outside where a friend met me to share some Champagne. John and Linda were both superb hosts; Linda tended to check-in, the bar, and the 2-table Italian restaurant. John (the owner) prepared food for the diners and made a nice pasta dish for me and my friend, which allowed us to remain outside on the porch all evening. The bar maintained a lively crowd and ambience later in the evening. Overall, a memorable evening that would otherwise have been spent in some crummy motel someplace. Will return.
