This is a clean, convenient, welcoming B&B, whether you have dogs or not; however, if you have dogs, the Hounds Tooth Inn is perfect! We arrived late at night to find a plate of brownies, a jar of dog treats, and milk in the refrigerator with a note on the kitchen counter instructing us to make ourselves at home. We did. The next morning, we enjoyed a delicious hot breakfast on the outdoor deck and our dog played with other well-behaved canine guests. Our hosts went out of their way to find out about and support our lodging preferences, as well as our vacation interests. We felt comfortable and well-taken care of the entire trip. The grounds are beautifully and thoughtfully maintained. Our ground floor room was huge, clean, quiet and very comfortable. The location of the hotel was good for us--a safe, quiet area, not too far off the freeway and not in the congested Kennebunkport village, so it was a convenient base for exploring the area. We stayed at the HTI almost a year ago and I've been meaning to write this well-deserved review ever since. This is not just a great B&B where you can bring your dog(s), it's a great B&B for dogs and for their people.

Randee and Norm made the three of us -- my wife, our dog, and me -- feel at home right away: they greeted us at the door, gave us a tour of the beautiful grounds, helped us with our bags, and led us to our suite. They assured us that our dog was welcome everywhere except the kitchen, and brought us to a fenced area where their their dog and ours had a nice romp. The Inn is located in scenic Kennebunk, a short drive from a variety of attractions: dog-friendly beaches, hiking, great restaurants, scenery, and shopping. Our room was spacious, with a sitting area and private bath. The decor was charming. Breakfast was served family-style; it was homemade and delicious every morning, chock full of vegetables from the Innkeeper's garden. We enjoyed visiting with Randee and the other guests, and talking with them about our adventures from the past day and plans for the next. We also shared some late afternoons on the grounds together as the sun went down. We enjoyed every moment of our week at the Hounds Tooth Inn and would recommend it to anyone visiting southern Maine.

We were greeted in the driveway by Randi & Norm. We then were introduced to Keegan their dog and felt welcomed immediately. The Inn was quaint and clean and extremely dog friendly. Our animals had a great time. Both owners were great and treated us like family and we were sad to leave. We stayed in the suite and there was plenty of room for us and our two small dogs. I would recommend this Inn for anyone who wants to travel with their pets and feel comfortable that they are truly welcome. It's also very conveniently located for anyone to stay even if you are not bringing your pet. The owner's are very good with providing things to do and places to see. Breakfast was delightful.

The Hound’s Tooth Inn is a delightful bed and breakfast hotel in Kennebunk. Randee and Norm, the proprietors, are very gracious people who work very hard to assure that their guests are happy. The breakfasts which Randee prepares are outstanding including wonderful French toast, pancakes, omelets, home-made jam, fruit, vegetables from her garden and many other delicacies. Due to heart problems, I have to be on a special low fat, low cholesterol diet. Randee made sure that everything I was served was either vegan, non-fat dairy or based on egg whites. Everything was delicious. She makes sure to accommodate all dietary preferences. The rooms were large, pleasant, beautifully decorated and very comfortable. The Hound’s Tooth is a dog-friendly hotel. Our Westie (Harry) and all the other canine guests loved it. There was plenty of room on the extensive grounds for us to walk our best friend. We stayed at the Hound’s Tooth Inn in August of 2013 and visited again in August of 2014. We had a wonderful time during each visit.

We reserved one of the suites about 6 weeks prior to our stay, spoke with the owners to confirm, paid half deposit, and received a confirmation email. They requested we call prior to arrival so that they could come out to greet the dogs. On the evening of our confirmed arrival date we pulled into town around 5pm. We called as requested but no answer. Left two voicemails while waiting around town for the next hour with still no answer. Finally just drove to the inn. When we walked into the driveway the owner greeted me by saying "who are you?" When I said who I was she responded "today?" I brought out my email to show her the reservation dates to which she responded "oh...well all the days blend together". Needless to say the suite we reserved (and paid almost $400 deposit for) wasn't available and she showed us instead to a much smaller room, a bit dingy and very low ceilings - a very unwelcome prospect for a couple with an almost 6ft 3 person and two larger dogs. When I suggested that this mistake was pretty concerning the owner responded as if I was in error saying "well the bed is bigger in here anyway" - no apology, no attempt to remedy. At this point I stepped out to the driveway where I was lucky enough to be able to reserve a large room at a hotel in portland which accommodated both dogs. They did refund me my deposit but I was surprised that they never followed up with an apology or offer of free stay as you would expect from a business who made that type of error. Having gotten a brief tour I would say if you have larger active dogs or are looking for any type of privacy on a couples vaca it is pretty tight quarters. Seem like nice enough people but a huge letdown after planning this vaca for 2 months.

Response from HoundsTooth, Owner at Hounds Tooth Inn
Responded 26 Aug 2014
After eleven years of bookings we had our first 1 day overlap in rooms. We were able to offer an alternative room with a larger bed. We did express our apologies several times, but the focus was on a iphone search even though you acknowledged us when we took you to our courtyard to stretch your 2 dogs legs. The alternative room was on the same floor as your preferred selected room and being an 1843 farmhouse all rooms on the 2nd floor have low ceilings of just under 7’. We were glad you found another location that suited you and your family. We hope you had a wonderful vacation in Maine. Best Regards, Randee & Norm

The grounds are immaculate and incredibly user friendly. Lights come on automatically indoors and out. The dogs comfort is very important to Randy. Her breakfasts keep you going until dinner! Her suggestions are dead on and she knows and loves her community! Absolutely wonderful vacation.

We've stayed at several wonderful B&Bs but Hounds Tooth Inn was by far the best. Our room was large, beautiful, clean and dog-friendly. Randee and Norm (who unfortunately was away most of our visit) made us feel extremely welcome. Randee gave us abundant helpful advice about things to do, good restaurants, and places that were open to dogs. We stayed a week and Randee made a gourmet breakfast every morning chock full of fresh veggies and fruit from their garden. Her cooking was so delicious that my husband even ate veggies that he would ordinarily never touch. And the dogs....our beagle Gus and their dog Teagen were best buddies from the start and looked forward to several playtimes every day. It was so helpful the way Randee made sure to introduce new dogs into the mix in a calm way so that both dogs and owners were relaxed and comfortable. We felt as if Randee was a close friend and after we read other reviews, we realized everyone felt that way - that's how special she is. She even sent rhubarb home with us. Definitely a 10+ Jo, Frank & Gus

We thought we just needed to "get away" for a night....but found a qualitatively better "peace and quiet" when we stumbled across The Hounds Tooth Inn. This property is a lovingly restored historic colonial with gorgeous, impeccable gardens. There is a dog run and lots of attention paid to our pets. My husband and I had never stayed at an Inn before, and were a bit unsure of what to expect, plus we did not want to travel with out our dog. But Randee and Norm are wonderful, warm gregarious people who have a way making you feel so welcome that you think you are visiting family. Randee is such a informed guide that the entire time we were visiting Kennebunk, we didn't feel like a tourists, lol, but like a special visitors. My husband and I felt so relaxed... we extended our stay. Thank you Randee and Norm...

My wife and I like to travel with our lab-mix rescue dog, but we have run up against all sorts of limitations on pet size, room location, etc., from other so called "pet friendly" lodgings. Not so at Houndstooth Inn, where the hosts Randee and Norm welcomed our dog as warmly as they welcomed us! This in itself was unique in my experience, but the hospitality shown by the proprietors made our stay feel more like a visit with best friends than any other lodging. When we arrived at the beautifully kept, carefully restored farmhouse that is the Houndstooth Inn, both Norm and Randee met us outside. They gave us an orientation tour of the grounds, and pointed out both of the enclosed doggie play areas, where my dog met their own friendly "host dog" Tigan. Randee inquired about all our dietary likes and requirements and recommended a convenient take out place for dinner (we were tired from the trip in Friday traffic) and showed us to our room, a warm and spacious fireplaced first floor suite they call "Kings Court." The beautifully decorated accomodations were immaculate and luxurious, and included a wet bar and large walk in shower. The king size bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in. The next morning, over Randee's skillfully prepared breakfast, she pointed out the dog friendly things to do and places to eat in Kennebunk, which, it turns out, are numerous. In particular, she pointed out places that the locals would frequent, giving us engaging options from the overcrowded beaches (It is high season now) and touristy claptrap of the southern Maine coast. The experience of staying at the Houndstooth Inn was a great springboard to the considerable charms of the area, and my wife and I (and dog) feel enriched and relaxed for having stayed there. Sadly, Randee informed us that she will be closing the Houndstooth Inn in October, 2014 for personal reasons. But that still leaves the late summer and early fall to experience one of the most unique gems of southern Maine hospitality I have ever found.
