Detailed Reviews
My husband and I decided to celebrate our 30th anniversary at this wonderful Inn. We had been there once before, back in September of 2017 and were so impressed by the luxury accommodations and staff that we decided to go back. We stayed in the Garden Suite this time which is beautifully decorated and has an upstairs loft, 4 poster bed, sky-lights and a gas-stove fireplace in the living room. It was so comfortable and clean, it felt like home. Because we were there off-season, we had gotten a great rate on the suite which included an absolutely delicious 5 course Chef's Tasting dinner menu. Some of the best food we had eaten in a very long time; each course was deliciously prepared and was served personally by Chef Michael. The Basil Cannelloni was fabulous as was the Seared Pork Medallions and Grand Marnier souffle. The staff was friendly and efficient. I highly recommend the Hartstone if you are looking for a great place to stay in Camden. It is centrally located in town and is walking distance to the shops and harbor and is also a short distance from Mount Battie which I highly recommend hiking if you have the time.

Our first visit to the Inn was in November of 19' and honestly we have been talking about returning ever since! We finally had the opportunity this weekend and it was as amazing this time as last time. We felt comfortable at the Inn, there was plenty of space between all the tables, Happy Hour was spread out amongst many rooms and the staff took the utmost care in cleaning between visitors. If you feel apprehensive about travel, I can assure you that the inn is taking all the precautions to ensure a clean and safe environment. In addition, if you do not want to mingle amongst others, the inn offers to go cocktails, dinner and breakfast options that you may enjoy in the comfort of your room.
The dining experience was again top notch. I love fine dining and good food and the Hartstone Inn delivers on both. The staff is a well oiled machine and they are non stop at breakfast service and dinner. Your coffee won't be empty or your cocktail. The little touches of hors d'ouvres at Happy Hour or the freshly pressed juice at breakfast didn't go unnoticed.
I am anxiously awaiting our next visit, but for now will continue to dream about my soufflé.

We were on a road trip through coastal New England, and were "winging it" so to speak when we happened upon this adorable Inn in Camden Maine. Upon arriving we were greeted by the Inn manager who was amazingly helpful and friendly, who gave us the low down on the town and the Inn. She offered us fresh cookies, and the happy hour on the patio with a light tasting from the chef were among a few of their extra touches we encountered. The room was AMAZING-LY clean and updated, as well as beautifully decorated with a fireplace to boot.... and at the BEST price we paid for any hotel or Inn that we had stayed in. The food (and I consider myself a food snob) was off the charts, the service was fabulous, free breakfast was delicious and the location was ideal (steps from the shops and restaurants of Camden) Truly every detail was tended to.
(Innkeeper even brought fresh chocolates to us in the room for our honeymoon)
As far as "you get what you pay for?" This Inn puts that saying to shame.... at Hartstone Inn - You get well and above what you pay for! Cheers...and Thanks!

My husband and I stayed here recently for our mini-moon, as we among many other couples had to change our wedding plans this year. We were hopeful that our stay at the Hartstone Inn would be as great as all the reviews said.
Unfortunately the suite, French Thyme fell below our expectations for the price. It first is a bit hidden, off the main road, which isn't a bad thing, except that the building felt a bit rundown. The landscaping was all overgrown, there seemed to be mold growing above the suites roof/awning, and both private decks needed a good sweep and wash.
The inside of the suite didn't feel as clean as we would expect with all the precautions hotels and inns are taking during the pandemic. It smelt a bit stale and the bedding was questionable on how clean it was. The sheets didn't look or smell clean and the pillows seemed a bit old and dingy.
We stayed two nights and after the first night we came back from a morning hike to find that housekeeping had been in our suite. We did not request this and felt that was unnecessary, especially since they didn't clean anything other than tidy up our bedding and folded the toilet paper roll... It felt a bit strange during a time when we are all trying to have less human to human contact.
We were however blown away by the dinner, that we thoroughly enjoyed on our second night. The food was amazing and the chef personally delivered all dishes to your table and checks back in with you.
All and all it was an OK stay, however I would not recommend this Inn to any friends or family due to the overpriced rooms for what you get.

Just spent a wonderful weekend away, our 3rd to be exact, at the beautiful Hartstone Inn. This year more than ever we all need a change of scenery from being stuck at home and getting away to the Hartstone Inn was just what we needed! The Inn keepers, Michael and Mary Jo, and their staff make you feel so welcome and have taken every precaution to also make you feel safe. We can’t say enough about the absolutely delicious food they serve(we are 2 foodies who love to eat) as it truly is some of the best meals we have ever enjoyed. Breakfast is included and certainly isn’t your standard fare- we enjoyed Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon with a small cup of oatmeal garnished with pistachios, golden raisins and maple syrup! Their 3 course dinner is memorable as well and at $40 per person an incredible meal at a very reasonable price. But it’s also the little things that make it so special. The amuse bouche before dinner, the complimentary appetizer with your cocktails as well as fresh cookies and tea in the afternoon. They also offer cooking classes at the Inn and I was lucky to get a spot in one and for two hours Michael shared some tips, tricks and delicious recipes while we sipped on wine. Fun way to spend an afternoon and further your cooking skills. All in all one of our favorite places to visit. If you haven’t been, we encourage you to treat yourself. You won’t be disappointed and you will come home a little more stress free than before you left, essential in these difficult times.

Third stay at Hartstone and it didn’t disappoint. We stayed during the week and got a really good deal. The food was incredible. We both had the Chef’s Menu which came with our room package, and the Chef really knows what he is doing. I cannot stop raving about the dinner! The lobster chowder was perfection! At breakfast in the morning, which was also great, our server remembered us from our last stay (about a year ago). I was shocked! She welcomed us back and then helped us figure out what to do with our day. It was cold and snowy, so we went to the Farnsworth, which is a great gallery. We stayed in the French Thyme Suite; it is a sunny room that is nicely decorated. It isn’t in the main building and we loved that. It was quiet and more secluded. It’s nice to get away from hustle and bustle, which is what Maine is for us. We will definitely be back! The people were welcoming; they made our stay personable and great.

The Hartstone Inn in Camden positions itself as a boutique hotel with some special amenities such as availability of jacuzzi in the room, fireplace in the room, gourmet breakfast, discounted cocktails during Happy Hour. The main building and the place on Pleasant street, where we stayed, are centrally located and very charming old houses. Parking behind the building on Pleasant street is very tight. We wish we could share excitement about our experience of staying there, but instead we were rather disappointed. We should have skipped Happy Hour cocktails at Hartstone Inn, as our “discounted” cocktails tasted as they had zero alcohol. We stayed in Lavender room and had the worst sleeping experience ever. The mattress was very soft and didn’t support the body weight. In the middle of the night, I have developed a terrible back pain that was running through the entire spine and I was forced to lay down on the floor for the rest of the night. It was uncomfortable, cold and sleepless night on the floor in this boutique hotel after which I got sick. My wife managed to sleep on the mattress, but she also had a bad night. The breakfast was included into the price and it was OK, but I wish the coffee could have been a bit stronger. The stuff was not super friendly. We paid $245 for one night stay and based on our experiences the hotel is overpriced considering the lack of comfort and average service offered.

I am sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay with us. I wish you would have told us that you didn't enjoy your drink, and we would have gladly made you another or something different. We always do our best to fix issues, if only we know about them. I apologize that neither you nor your wife rested well with us and that you did not enjoy our beds. It is very difficult to find a bed that pleases everyone, and while most guests love our beds, I'm sorry that you did not. Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback; we appreciate it good or bad, as it helps us to better ourselves. I hope that you will join us again, so that we may show you a wonderful time in Camden, Maine.

There are a lot of nice things about this inn. Including the rooms and the grounds. However I’m writing due to very lax covid practices we noticed.
Most notably our air conditioning broke and a maintenance man came to fix it. He spent more than 20min in our room without a mask on. He also put part of the air conditioning remote in his mouth while he was trying to fix it, and then put it back together and didn’t wipe it down.
Further despite having a large patio are the hotel is insisting on breakfast being eaten inside, in small rooms that are often at capacity. Even when we asked for a less confined and busy alternative for breakfast we were denied.
I’m sure this place is normally very charming, however in the era of the pandemic I wouldn’t recommend it.

Thank you for taking the time to make us aware of this issue. We take the safety and well being of our guests and staff very seriously, and are following all of the recommended guidelines. While breakfast is served inside the Inn, guests are always more than welcome to order their food to-go to enjoy outside or in their room, if only they ask. Because of your comments, we have taken this as an opportunity to reeducate our entire staff to make sure we are doing everything we can do for everyone's safety.

Advertised as a 4 Diamond resort but AAA has the Hartstone as a #3 Diamond and slipping downhill rapidly. The owners have long fled ( no one seems to know how long ago) although they are constantly referred to as if they are on premises. The advertised cooking classes are pure fiction as the previous owners are in Italy and then on to France. The new owner is an absent owner with little to do with the Inn, which by the way is in 3 separate locations, one of which is 1 1/2 blocks away. We had to move our room as the bathroom mold was absolutely disgusting. There appears to be mold everywhere and it seems that the Inn is becoming shabbier by the minute. Without going on and on I will quote what a staff member said when we were moving our room due to the unhealthy conditions. She said, "We've been booked solid for the past six months and for a few months in the future.....we haven't had time to do a deep cleaning". So, although they are aware of the nasty state of things they will continue to put the almighty dollar over the health and well being of their guests. I couldn't even imagine a Motel 6 surviving with a mindset like that. Great staff at a beautiful Inn (at a distance) but be aware of the extremely poor housekeeping and maintenance and note that all the framed accolades hanging on the walls date back years, some to 2006!

Dear Tabicma1, Thank you for review although we are a bit surprised to see it. We knew you were unhappy with your room and immediately upgraded you to your own private apartment for a few nights. Upon moving to this apartment, both you and your wife expressed how pleased you were and how happy you were with your accommodations. In the meantime, we had your previous room deep cleaned and sanitized - which you also said you were very thankful for and approved of the cleaning. While we have been in the middle of a busy tourist season, and short staffed as most small businesses in the nation, our team here at Hartstone has been doing our very best. We realize some items may slip through the cracks, though not intentional. The Inn did sell 6 weeks, which all of our staff are aware of and can tell guests the date of sale. The former Chef/Owner does still have memorabilia on the walls - however it will be replaced soon. Cooking classes/packages are being planned and will be offered to our guests in the future - during our winter months - as we have always done. Our new owner is planning on many renovations and improvements for the property - which will benefit all future guests and our staff. We are sorry that you had this experience and are surprised as you had mentioned to our staff you would be back. We hope your overall trip to Midcoast Maine was enjoyable.

We chose this inn based on reviews and the pictures on the website. We also liked there was an on-site restaurant. It was hard to chose a room, but we stayed in the Carriage Suite. It was a bit small, but lovely with the most comfortable bed! There is a large jacuzzi tub and separate shower with good water pressure. The room is located right next to the patio, although we didn't hear any noise. We took advantage of the Happy Hour and had delicious peach martinis while sitting on the porch. Dinner was delicious! The seafood chowder, sweet potato gnocchi, and pork chop were amazing. We loved it so much we had dinner there both nights. Second night, the pasta cabonara was a standout! They also have good wines available at reasonable pricing. Shout out to Megan who was so friendly and made us feel very special. Highly recommend staying and dining here. Can't wait to return!
