We have traveled a lot over the past year and had some good and not so good experiences. This was the best. The hotel has great bones, a great atmosphere. We saw it on the internet and decided we had to visit while going to family in North Carolina. The location is very good to be able to walk to the distilleries and attractions downtown in Louisville.
We loved the historic yet modern feel with things in good shape. They said they recently put in new marble glass bathrooms, they were very nice. They appeared to be very concerned on cleanliness in the lobby and in the sleeping rooms, it was spotless in the room and often an attendant in the lobby.
We slept well in a quiet room, although the hotel was very busy for the weekend.
The history was very fun to read, they have it posted all over the first and second floors with a lot of neat stories.
The restaurant on the second floor was great. We saw a wedding going on in the beautiful ballroom, very glamorous.
The employees treated everyone as special. They remembered our name as we came and went. I remember Elizabeth at the front desk and Sue the supervisor in the restaurant and Ragina our server. Great people.
We hope to come back soon.

The historic Brown Hotel was a pleasure to stay at, even with the surrounding area boarded up due to the protests. The service was impeccable, and that provided by Yassir was a standout. We even got an expert bourbon tasting by Troy, the manager. Food was great (the Hot Brown, of course), and lobby area was beautiful. Bathrooms were updated, but room was tired and in need of upgrades to match the bathroom. They took many measures to make us feel comfortable during COVID. Self-parking in the adjacent garage made it easy to get in/out. Minutes from historic neighborhoods, downtown and Churchill Downs.

We stayed here about 6 years and now returned for another visit. The people here are so special and kind and considerate. The rooms are nice and large for a historic hotel built in 1930. They have different history exhibits around the lobby and old menus with prices we will never see, with full dinners from $1.75. The Ballroom is one of the nicest we have ever seen. The wedding we attended was so nice, we were so happy for the bride. We ate in the Cafe on the first floor and in the lobby. Both do a great job. They have an extensive bourbon list including the most expensive Pappy Winkle, which was a little out of our price range The front desk employees were great, Amy was very kind, as was Trinity. The bellman were quick with the cars - Doug was always there with a story. The maids were also pleasant on our floor and always willing with an extra towel - we like Mariam a lot as she diligentlyl ensured our room was in top shape. The place in kind of out of European charm with marble all over the lobby. The employees were very conscientious with cleaning and keeping things in shape. Our room was well kept and we liked the new showers they put in the rooms since our last visit, a great upgrade. The location is in the downtown near many of the things to do in Louisville and the staff was very knowing of a lot of the attractions for us to see. The crew all wear face masks, which made us feel safe, something we didnt see a lot of aroud the city. All in all its one of the finer places we have stayed.

My wife and I had the most extraordinary time for New Year's Eve. First the customer service was over the top amazing. In an age of mediocrity, the Brown Hotel has nailed what it takes to provide "more than the customer expects". Everyone from the valet and bell staff to the check-in, room service, the English Grill, maintenance and follow up on our satisfaction level was on the same page in the songbook.

Our room was clean, with ample towels, robes, and great toiletry items. The Club Luxury option that includes the complimentary adult beverages, regular beverages and snacks in the afternoon and a very extensive continental breakfast each morning, is well worth the price.

The English Grill was fine dining at its best. The food, wine recommendation from Troy and the entire atmosphere created a very special experience.

We will be back and not just for NYE!

Happy New Year!

Definitely a hotel with that feels of old time grandness. There is a parking garage around the corner from the main entrance of the hotel that is connected by a walkway. The parking garage is a public garage, so anyone can park there. The fee with in and out privileges is $26.50 after tax, if you don't plan on taking your car out, the fee is $20 (not sure if that includes taxes).

The lobby of the hotel, as well as the restaurants are located on the second floor. There is a gift shop on the 1st floor. The check-in desks look like an old train ticket office. Check-in was quick and friendly. We were assigned a room on the 10th floor, I think it was room 1040. The hotel is shaped like a U and the even number rooms on the ends face each other.

The room was big, the beds were small (2 doubles). There is a large closet in the room with bathrobes in it. The beds were good, the pillow were too firm and had no give. A large desk is provided, with a desk chair as well as an arm chair. The furniture definitely has an older feel to it. There aren't many outlets, probably due to the age of the hotel. The shower was extremely hot!

A minifridge is provided, as well as a coffee maker, however there is no microwave.

Stay at the Brown Hotel for the history of it, not for the modern conveniences.

We ordered room service as it was our only dining option in the hotel due to current circumstances. While the omelette and hot brown were good the coffee was weak and lukewarm. There was also no butter or jelly for our toast. We called to request butter, jelly and ketchup however we never received it. The front desk even called to ask if we received the items and we told her we did not. After 20 more minutes we still never received them. When expressing our disappointment at checkout there was no offer of compensation such as taking a few dollars off our bill or a coupon for a complementary item if we return.
We make it a habit to stay in historic hotels on our travels. This was our first rather disappointing one. Usually the staff goes out of their way to make our stay wonderful. We were saddened that we experienced subpar room service especially when we never saw any other guests at the hotel during our entire visit. Sadly we will stay at a different hotel on our trip back through Louisville next weekend.

The Historic Hotel is nice, could use some updates. Poorly staffed because of the inability to get workers but the staff was extremely professional and hardworking. The food and service in the restaurants was very good. Our room didn’t have a hairdryer and we had to borrow one from our friends room because they didn’t have enough help to get us one in time. The room was large, the bed was comfortable. The club level advantages were not available because of staffing issues abs we were issued vouchers for food and drinks because we could not utilize the club level perks.

We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend at the Brown Hotel. We came to Louisville for a national cross country meet, and we are very glad we opted out of the standard efficiency express hotel near the park. The Brown Hotel gives a glimpse into an earlier age of opulence. Also, we had requested a quiet room, and boy, did we get one. We were on the 12th (top) floor with a view of downtown Louisville. If there was an outside world, we certainly couldn't hear it. Nothing in our room went beep or clank either. The only restaurant open for dinner is the lobby bar, which is a shame, as the demand exceeds the number of tables. The maitre'd went to great effort to get us seated, as we were hotel guests. We enjoyed the bourbon selection, the food, the live piano music, and the friendly service (from overworked staff) very much.
Don't be put off by reviews reporting tired or worn decor. Yes, the entry way tiles are damaged from foot traffic, the carpet is worn in spots, and some paint/molding in our room was chipped. The furniture is appropriate for the period--heavy, ornate, and dark wood. This is a historic hotel, and some of that goes with the territory. If you enjoy historic sites and want a change from the standard, modern chain hotel, you will have great fun at the Brown Hotel. I give it 5 stars not for being the epitome of luxury (for example, you have to ask for extra towels), but for how much we enjoyed our visit.

My wife are I returning guests to the Brown. The hotel has an interesting history that is centered around its founder, and Louisville’s “invisible benefactor,” James Graham Brown. The Brown Hotel is perhaps even more famous for its gift to the culinary world, the Hot Brown-a delectable dish, made with simple ingredients, that is so rich and complex that it cannot be explained.
The Hot Brown was famously created at the Brown, consisting of roast turkey, brioche toast slices, pecorino, bacon, tomato, and a rich mornay sauce (one of the 5 French mother sauces). It is expertly broiled and served sizzling. There are many restaurants in Louisville that serve the Hot Brown. The hotel even provides the recipe free of charge, however, nothing compares to enjoying it at the hotel.
The Brown also makes a special version of the classic “Manhattan” cocktail. It’s expertly well-balanced. The Lobby Bar mixes it with orange bitters and garnishes it with cherries that are macerated in cognac. The orange bitters have a slight smokey flavor, similar to rimming the glass with an orange peel that has been held up to a lighter, but more delicate and more subtle. It’s stirred and served up in a chilled glass.
Like the Hot Brown and the Brown Manhattan, the hotel has perfected the guest experience by consistently repeating it and refining it for nearly a century. J. Graham Brown made the hotel his home for over 40 years and his attention to detail is reflected in every facet. Service is king at the Brown and the entire guest experience, from valet service to dinner service, is executed with the highest commitment to the guest experience.
I cannot finish this review without mentioning the Muhammad Ali suite. It’s a corner suite that offers 2 bathrooms, a spacious living room, a very nice dining room with a wet bar, and a nice king bed. The master bathroom has a large jacuzzi and there is a large shower in the guest bathroom. The suite is adorned with boxing memorabilia that is centered around the suite’s namesake and Louisville’s most famous athlete, Muhammad Ali. Enjoying Hot brown’s and Manhattans, in the dining room, of the suite is something that I would recommend.
If you find yourself in Louisville, you should seriously consider staying here. If you don’t have business in Louisville, you may want to visit, and if you do, you should stay at the Brown.

We stayed at The Brown Hotel the first night of the Bourbon Trail. The hotel is spectacular - a work of art! The room was decorated like a bedroom in a stately old home, warm, cozy, with a horse theme. The bathroom was modern and clean, with a nice big walk-in shower. They had soft, thick towels and terrycloth robes in the closet if you needed one. The beds and pillows were very comfortable.

We did have dinner at the Lobby Bar, but I will review it separately. The food and service were top notch! All staff of the hotel and restaurant were very friendly and professional. I highly recommend staying and eating at The Brown.
