The rooms are of a local style very spacious with a verandah & shower room.
The glass doors open onto your verandah to enjoy respite out of the sun in between safari's. The rooms are clean but perhaps are in need of an update/refresh. No mosquito nets over beds in this one.
The dining area and bar are spacious areas overlooking the park and the you enjoy a good service for the staff. Plenty of choice in the buffet style meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Internet only available in the bar area and is very slow.
On your day of leaving staff stand in the pathway to assist with your luggage to the reception all looking for tips, we liked it because we were in room 17 and was a little walk away from the reception area.

You must come here. Beautifully appointed, the food is amazing and caters to all tastes. The rooms are beautiful in a still rustic African fashion. Hot water is plentiful and immediate and believe me, you need it after a long Safari. There is a lovely lounge bar and dining room with traditional sisal roof but open to the air, which invites unexpected friends. A lovely pool for a dip after a morning game drive. The rooms are clean and the beds comfortable with a private balcony. The room attendants come and do a turndown service, spray and set up the mosquito nets while you dine on the sumptuous offerings at dinner. Breakfast is a buffet with every western option including pancakes, french toast and bacon, complete with omelette chef. And lunch and dinner are a’la carte. There is also an outback airstrip (Samburu Onxy Airstrip) should you wish to fly in instead of 4WD through the park. Today on our game drive, we saw Lions, Elephants, the Reticulated Giraffe, Mongoose, Baboons, Gazelle, Giraffe Gazelle and Antelope. The best part about this? No noise, just the sounds of nature. Come rest and relax, this was the best part of our Safari.

This was a not so good Sopa lodge. Small room, cramped bathroom. When we went to complain there was only a mosquito net around one of the beds, there wasn’t a living soul to be found. We knocked on doors and hollered hallo, but there wasn’t even a barman to get a drink from. When there was staff, they did not appear inclined to make there guests comfortable. As there were not many guests, all meals (including breakfast) were set menu – served at the table by a morose guy. Water and electricity available at limited times, wifi very unreliable (when electricity was on of course).

I’d give you a zero if I could. I simply do not understand how a big corporation like Sopa can justify renting rooms with such pathetic bathrooms. The toilet looked filthy and rocked and rolled if you had the misfortune of using it, the shower never fully drained and the sink/counter are weathered and tired. It’s disrespectful to your guests and it’s disrespectful to the employees you task with managing your property. The sad thing is you have the bones for a decent lodge if you’d spend some money.

Josephine in the dining area was superb as was Rose who did a beautiful job with our laundry. Most everyone else was rather indifferent. The front desk and gift shop both refused to break a $1,000 Ksh note and made zero effort to accommodate us.

The food is all served buffet style and is typical for this kind of setting. It was pretty decent.

It was very hot when we checked in and we were instructed to NEVER open the window because of baboons of which we saw one in three days. We were told the room had a natural cooling design which was nonsense. Overall a very disappointing experience that has put me of Sopa forever.

Responded 24 Oct 2022
Dear T_Ravel_Zona, Thank you for your feedback and we appreciate that you were happy with our restaurant staff Josephine and housekeeping staff Rose whom together with all the staff at Samburu Sopa Lodge we will strive to encourage to soar even higher standards of service delivery. We are also glad that you found our buffet-styled meals pleasant. We are sorry to have disappointed you with the state of our weathered sanitary ware that we should have replaced after an extended period of inactivity due to Covid-19 effects. We have taken your feedback seriously and are in the process of replacing them and training all of our staff on the importance of great customer service. Thank you again for your comments and looking forward to hosting you again at an improved Samburu Sopa Lodge. Sincerely, Lodge Management

Wow! Where do I begin?! This place was so much fun! It is situated in the middle of Samburu National Reserve approximately 40kms from the gate. Your game drive starts from the moment you enter the gate, all the way to the accommodation. From the moment we walked in we felt like part of the family. We were welcomed by James and given a cold towel and drink on arrival. He gave us a briefing about the lodge and explained that the power is only switched on between 5am - 9:30am and then again between 6:30pm - 11:30pm . This was because power is run from a diesel generator therefore conserving power, being environmentally friendly and being considerate for people sleeping at night. It was a great idea and was never an issue for us as we were out on game drives during the day, in the pool or sleeping at night. WiFi is available in all the main areas. The pool and bar area was great and very refreshing during the warm days between game drives. The rooms are traditional with a thatched roof, they were very clean and offered all the usual amenities including complementary bottled water. The beds come complete with mosquito nets for night time and a turn down service. There is no fencing around the lodge which is a gateway for elephants, lions and cheetahs but there are very friendly rangers who escort you to and from your room during the night. At no time did we ever feel unsafe and knowing this just added to the adventure aspect of our stay. The restaurant offers a great variety of three course meals from a daily menu and the food was lovely. There was always plenty of food and we never went hungry. Our waitress Moreen was the best. She was very attentive and extremely friendly. It was an absolute pleasure to catch up with her at meal times. All the staff were extremely friendly, they all had a great sense of humour and made us feel safe and at home. We would highly recommend this place and would definitely stay here again.

We were given a room very near to reception ( number 3 ) which was greatly appreciated as I was having mobility problems. The lodge is very good with a lovely dining area and good pool. We had a couple of very eventful safari drives and were fortunate to see several cheetahs which are my favourite animals.
Samburu is a long drive from Nairobi but fortunately the roads have improved a lot since our last visit 12 years ago.

I was surprised of the quality of the hotel given it is in a game preserve. Each building housed two rooms. The space was large and there was a lovely back patio. Turn down service came nightly and lowered the mosquito netting, a flashlight, and supplied bottled water. There were always staff about to help with luggage and walk us to our rooms in the dark. The pool was lovely but cold. The restaurant was buffet and had many choices, including vegetarian Indian food. The biggest draw back was the beds were rock hard. But we were so tired after our days that we slept well anyway.

The lodge is inside the National Reserve and the rooms are in the style of Cottages/Pods . They are very spacious with two double beds, separate bathroom, dressing table, wardrobe, safe and private terrace with lovely views. The beds were very comfortable with plenty of bedding and pillows. Bathroom was spacious with lots of toiletries and towels. Each cottage is accessible along a paved walkway, not far at all from the reception area. NB: there are no hairdryers and if you need constant electricity (for CPAP users) you need to alert reception upon arrival as a small number of rooms have solar power for overnight electricity.

The public areas such as bar, restaurant and pool are very spacious and comfortable. A nice place to relax whilst waiting to go on game drives or for a drink before and after dining. The food is served buffet style and there is plenty of variation with two hot soups to choose from to begin at both lunch and dinner. Breakfast is served buffet, lots to choose from and live egg cooking to your choice.
The staff are exceptional. Friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and accommodating.

This is my second visit to Samburu Sopa and I’m pleased to say it’s every bit as great as my previous visit. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. The views are great and I particularly enjoyed the visit from the two genet cats at dinner!

Our small group had a great three days at Sopa Lodge, Samburu. The rooms are spacious and clean, the staff are very friendly and also very attentive. The food was varied and good. The pool is a welcome break from the heat of the day, and the tuskers are cold and refreshing. In 30 or so years of travelling to Kenya (in a variety of accomodations from camping to this sort of cost level), the Sopa Lodge ranks as one of my favourite.

Some small caveats: I think we were at low season as there were not too many guests; the rains had just been, so animals scattered, but we saw lots of elephant and plains; the day ratees of US$70 are going up to $85 in June and that's not cheap - but that is not Sopa's fault!

We r in fact here now and in a word to describe this place is F A B U L O U S
arrived lunch yesterday and before going out for the evening game drive we will have done 24 hours
In that time we have been treated like lords
The staff are so friendly approachable and nothing is too much …They accommodate every wishes you might have
The food quality and quantity are second to none .We are a vegetarian family and really we have could nit asked for anymore by way of choice …., They produced dishes that only 5 star fine dinning ….for the Gujarati speaking they even made us some ice cold “ chass” with cumin and salt in the heat of 33’
W OW what a treat to quench that thirst !
The rooms are very comfortable with Mosquito Nets , but frankly not needed as there are none to be found !
The place is in the middle of the wild plains of Samburu and hence security is of a high standard so no chance that a stray game might surprise you …..day and night !
The generosity of the staff iD overwhelming !
English is spoken completely by everyone !
The comfort on all respects is present everywhere .
