Perfect pandemic escape for one who has gone on grand old house tours, and wondered what it would be like to live in one! Even sit on the antique (original, 1910 ) furniture! Lovingly kept up over the years, beds were comfy, air chillers worked well, bathrooms original- so lower pressure in shower tolerable for the authentic experience. Larrikay’s breakfast with home -grown eggs & herbs, & husband standing by, made us feel like royalty!!
Located next-door and across the street from two of the 50 or so mid century modern classic buildings that draw architecture lovers from all over to Columbus Indiana. Nice juxtaposition in history, and the boyhood home of the philanthropist who ended up supporting the mid century modern movement. Great homebase for an easy walking tour all over this little Brigadoon of the mid 19th century.

Our time at the inn is a memory now but, it was so lovely and has stayed w/me enough that I wanted to write a review. We visited the Inn at the beginning of December and our timing couldn't have been better, as the Inn was beautifully decorated for the season, the common rooms were all welcoming and comfortable for that time of year and our individual rooms were delightful - the suite had a Christmas tree, as well, which enhanced the festive mood. Brittany was our Innkeeper which, made all the difference in our stay. 1st her breakfasts were excellent - beautifully presented and delicious, both mornings but, added to that was her knowledge and obvious pleasure in knowing the history of the Inn and all of Columbus, which is such a fascinating, wonderful city. She made the visit exceptional. We look forward to visiting when the gardens are in bloom. I love that this home exists and is open to the guests.

We had a delightful evening at the Inn at Irwin Gardens, staying in the third floor suite that belonged to Mr. Irwin himself. It is beautifully furnished with great attention to comfort, and looks down on the stunning formal garden. The 1910 era shower was a hoot, but worked really well despite looking like a medieval torture device. The plumbing in that suite is original from the 1920 remodel, with intriguing flush mechanism and clever hidden shelves. The shared public spaces of the Inn are gracious and welcoming, particularly the tea setup in the music room, and the grand library overlooking the garden terrace. And breakfast was sublime - a spinach frittata, perfectly cooked bacon, fruit parfait, green salad and terrific coffee and tea. Great care was taken with my gluten sensitivity. The Inn is walking distance to the excellent Henry's Social Club, as well as a number of other fun restaurants and an ice cream parlor. We hope to return!

We were two couples in our 70s and expected a quiet stay at the Inn. Upon arrival, LarryK (sp?) informed us that a rehearsal dinner was taking place on the terrace by the gardens that evening. The wedding was to be held Saturday. I would have appreciated knowing this, as we would have gone another weekend. I don't know if this consideration for our stay was not offered in advance due to a lack of judgment or the desire to sell the rooms. We were told the bridesmaids were staying on the third floor and that the bridal suite was adjacent to our rooms on the second floor. The young people were one of the nicest groups one could have asked for; however, the inevitable lively chatter and laughter began in the morning in the bridal suite and in the hall. The Inn was overrun and deference was paid to this group. It was a dry wedding, and the gathering was composed of fine 20s and 30s. However, the situation was not appreciated, and we should have been told in advance. Also, the breakfast started with a generous slice of banana bread topped with a sweet icing. A shirred egg dish was served with asparagus and sausage patties that were greasy and insipid. I did not like the flavor of the dish. LarryK asked it how it was, and the others in my group said fine. However, when we were gone, I told everyone I did not care for the breakfast. Then, they all said they did not like it for the same reasons as mine. Who wants to tell the cook that they don't like the food............Yes, the plumbing is old, but that was no surprise given it's an historic house. I expected beautiful flowers in the terraced gardens but most of it was green plants of some kind. We did sit in the library to visit after Friday night dinner. That room with all of the old books was most enjoyable. The entire Inn was too cold for us. None of us found a thermostat, but I got a cover out of the closet. LarryK told us about the covers, but my husband and friends didn't look for them. I got the one in our room, or I couldn't have slept. The house itself and the rooms and bathrooms are very clean. The location is excellent, and the Visitors' Center and downtown are right there. I would not stay there again, but I believe there is a tour of the house a couple times a week.

I think our expectations were different than our experience. The house is conventiently located a few blocks from the downtown area. Free parking on the street. This is TRULY a historic home with most of the original furnishings, so the rooms are stiff and not very comfortable. We did have a huge room but since it is vintage the bathroom was small and cramped. Ventilation system looks suspect. We had to get a duvet out of the closet since the room was so cold. Noticed later that they had box fan and space heater in closet so maybe that tells you something. Getting in and out of the tub/shower was a chore. Breakfast was just ok. The scrambled eggs were hard and the asparagus was undercooked. A basket of pastries would have been welcomed. As I said the formal garden is fantastic and the best part for us was sitting on the huge patio which faces the garden and enjoying some wine.
If you want history, this is your place. I guess it was just too historic for us.

Needing to take a break from the city and 2020, the Inn was the perfect place. We spent a wonderful, and peaceful 3 days. The gardens are spectacular ... and more Monarch butterflies than I had seen in years. The house is authentic, and we loved our room and it’s working 1910 bathroom fixtures. The Innkeeper and staff were very accommodating and the breakfasts fantastic. Finally, the location for walking to see the architecture of Columbus or to the downtown restaurants can’t be beat.
Definitely on our list for one or more return visits.

This inn is a lovely, welcoming place with beautiful gardens and appointments from its era. Our room on the second floor was very nice and comfortable. As the inn is 100 years old, the shower/bathroom is age appropriate. The sitting rooms on the main floor and dining room are very inviting. Breakfasts were sumptuous and beautifully prepared and served. Wine was offered daily at 5 pm and it was nice to have snacks and beverages on the floor available to guests at no extra charge. The staff is lovely, helpful. Stacey knows so much about the Inn and local history and art, in addition to being an excellent innkeeper. She helped us very much in arranging to waitlist us for a tour we wanted to take but forgot to book until too late. (We made it off the waitlist! Don't miss the Miller House!) We very much enjoyed our visit here and were so glad we chose to stay at the Inn at Irwin Gardens. Would not hesitate to recommend it to friends/family.

I don't like chain restaurants, I don't prefer chain hotels. This unique find satisfies both these preferences and exceeded my expectations!
With a little imagination, one feels as if one is a guest in Bruce Wayne's mansion (1966 Batman) or Jay Gatsby in the Roaring '20's. The Edwardian architecture is brilliantly preserved with authentic period-piece furniture and adornments. There are WWII era magazines lying about to add to the authenticity. Some furniture may not be comfortable but it is genuine.
Our room, the Clementine Tangeman Suite, was spacious, comfortable and had a brilliant view of the gardens to the east. The gardens made for an excellent walkabout. I marveled at the design and preservation in spite of its age and imperfections.
With the I.M.Pei designed library next door, the visitor center on the other side of the library, one is at the center of Columbus, a perfect starting point to the architectural walking tour. It is a five-minute walk to the better dining options in Columbus, as well.
Our breakfast was delicious. I was told that every day brings a different dish. This was a bit disappointing to hear because when I return I want that same dish again!
While most Hoosiers flock to Nashville, Indiana for whatever reason, I much prefer this find. The architecture of this small city, the food at the inn (and local restaurants) and the interesting history of the home all make for a wonderful stop.

Since we first discovered The Inn at Irwin Gardens in 2017, we have probably stayed here at least seven times. And each time we stay we thoroughly enjoy ourselves - it’s a first rate establishment with a lot of charm and character. The innkeeper is such gracious and welcoming host. When we booked this time, we asked that the fireplace to be lit in the library, and they were very accommodating and honored our request. We spent New Year’s Eve evening sipping on champagne and enjoying the cozy fire in a truly unique and beautiful setting.
The innkeeper was very accommodating with our special request for breakfast and present, and a wonderful breakfast, with fresh fruit scones, and a unique breakfast dish I believe she called “eggs, a roosty”. Just
Since it was a week after Christmas, all of the decorations were up yet, there were Christmas trees in every room. They really went all out to make place so beautifully decorated for Christmas.
We really appreciated the innkeeper notifying us right away that we had left something in the room so that we could return quickly and pick it up.
We highly recommend the inn for those looking for a unique experience in a beautiful and romantic setting. This place has it all, and we will be back again hopefully many many times.

Jessica the owner of the Inn at Irwin Gardens was very kind and unbelievably helpful. Breakfast was lovely. The rooms were well maintained, fantastic plush sheets and towels. Location is perfect for sightseeing. Columbus is my hometown that I haven't see in in 20 years and the Inn was the perfect base to walk down memory lane. Would love to come again.

No. But the gardens are nice for strolling, and you can get exercise walking to nearby restaurants.
