Just okay. Here are the basics: king bed was comfortable, the room was quiet and dark for sleeping. Bathroom was tiny, with just the bare minimums. Shower was wimpy. We were in a spa room on the 5th floor. There was a nice jacuzzi on the balcony, but the “city view” was the roof top of the building next door and the (very loud) traffic below. Not peaceful, not quiet. Pretty disappointing for the amount we paid. Maybe the river view spa room balconies are quieter; we were told there were none available. When we checked in (on a Monday), there was a sign at reception that said breakfast hours were until 10:30. We came down the next morning at 9:30 and found out breakfast would end then. They let us stay to eat, but it was cold eggs, no fruit, cereals. Bacon was good. :) All in all, while the room was quiet and bed comfortable, our experience was disappointing. I rely on TripAdvisor so much for our travels, so I thought I should write an honest, just-the-facts review here. We would not stay here again.

We did not even get a chance to stay at this hotel. You know a hotel is cursed when the experience is bad BEFORE you arrive!!! We booked a reservation online and got a email confirm with a confirmation number on March 24th at 2:56 PM. We were attending a wedding on July 30th this year. By chance....and I mean by chance, I happened to call the Hotel Baker on July 5th to inquire about making a change to my reservation. Guess what? Sorry we have no record of your reservation. I told the front desk contact (Victoria) that I have a confirm number and email confirmation. She proceeded to tell me about some reservation system snafu and sorry but we do not have any rooms! Really? That is your response to my situation. Victoria promised to talk the manager (Angie) and call me back. Surprise! No return call. I call hotel back after 4 hours of waiting. No Angie. Gone for day. Maggie takes my number and says someone will call be back. No follow-up so I am forced to call again. I asked to talk to the General Manager and co-owner who is Rowena Felix Salas (the other owner is Joe Salas). The person in the sales department was reluctant to provide the contact information for the General Manager and co-owner initially. In any case, I sent an email to the General Manager and co-owner. I asked that she call me. No reply. Imagine if I had not called and we showed up on our check in date with luggage in hand to attend the wedding event. We travel a lot for business and leisure and this is by far the worst experience before arriving to a hotel property in our travel history! The entire hotel staff and owners ghosted us!!! Do yourself a favor and avoid this hotel in St. Charles. Do I really have to provide them w/ one star? How about zero!

Our family recently had a wedding and reception here for 150+ guests (many who stayed at the hotel). Even though way over $20,000 was spent, we were not allowed to sit and relax in the beautiful gardens advertised with a view of the river. We were escorted away like we were criminals, 70 year old criminals at that. To say that the front desk staff and manager were unhospitable would be an understatement. All areas of the hotel are cordoned off and guarded and the lobby had four seats in it. I would never recommend this hotel for anyone. Elevators were old and dirty, soiled dinner napkins on the floor of the elevator. Disgusting.

Absolutely do not book this hotel if you are expecting to enjoy the advertised garden and exquisite patio. These amenities are not available to hotel guests. Guests have access to the teeny tiny lobby and the hotel room only. The gardens and patio are only available for event rentals — and they have rental events every second. Signs, ropes and angry managers are on guard at the entrance steps preventing any attempt to take at least a peek. Also, after a seven hour drive to get there, the first thing we were greeted with was a large sign with big bold letters that say NO ALCOHOL. Not even a sign next to it that says “welcome.” Just not a welcoming place at all. It’s as if the staff is there to please the event space renters and the actual hotel guests are just an afterthought. So sorry we didn’t book the Marriott with the rest of our group — at least they welcome you with a smile and you get points.

Great hotel with beautiful character! Clean, comfy. Staff all very friendly and helpful. Easy walking distance to restaurants and Arcada Theater. Special praise is deserved for Rowena- we had an very gross and unfortunate mishap with my jacket the night before we were to fly home. She took my jacket and washed it, then wrapped it as a present- had it waiting for me at the desk at check out. This was amazingly above and beyond kind of service. We were just looking for a hose to rinse it through and a garbage bag to keep it from contaminating our suit case, but instead, I was able to wear it the next morning (which was rainy and chilly for us Florida folk!!). Rowena was the best and we will gladly stay in Hotel Baker the next time we come for a concert at the Arcada!!

I’m St. Charles native and was so excited to have our wedding at Hotel Baker, and now I wish we would’ve had it ANYWHERE else. *No onsite parking. There is a free parking garage close by but Main Street is super busy literally all of the time and there is only room for 3 cars at a time to drop their stuff off at the door before trying to exit out of traffic and make it to the parking garage *Absolutely NO early check ins. Check in is a 4PM sharp even though a handful of our guests who had kids with them requested early check in, and the hotel told them no problem, even though it was *One family booked rooms next to each other and when they got to the hotel the rooms were at opposite ends. When the mother went to talk to the front desk Faye or Faith, was so rude to her that she made the mother cry, while telling her that the reason they couldn’t have the room next to the room that they currently had was because the bride didn’t book any of the “River King” rooms. I happened to overhear this and told Faye/Faith that’s not the case at all and she shushed me and then ignored me completely. I went and got the list containing all of the guests that booked rooms in our room block (sent to me by the hotel) and at least 15 of the rooms were listed as “River King Rooms.” During this entire situation, Faye/Faith told the only nice front desk worker that she “was incompetent and you can’t train her to do anything” *The light up floors are great but be prepared. They make the room SO hot *We were supposed to have the white curtains hanging from the ceiling but for some reason they weren’t there *The power went out for 2 hours during our reception and Hotel Baker is claiming it “was the entire city block.” I spoke to the City of St. Charles and they informed that that 1 hour and 21 minutes of the power outage was due to Hotel Baker not knowing where their main circuit braker was or how to reset it. Again the Hotel's "engineer" and manager on site were telling me it was the city's fault. Cut to 1/10 over 5 weeks after my wedding and I still haven't heard a peep from them even though I have reached out multiple times to multiple people including one of the owners. *We had an awesome 5 person band, but there really isn’t room for a band at this venue. The rainbow room says it fits 200 people but we had 130 and the band and it was packed *We were told that we could keep all of our stuff In both the Triple Crown Room (where the bridesmaids got ready) and St. Charles Room (where the vendors kept all of their stuff) until the next morning and it would be locked up and no one would be able to get in there. At midnight, after our failed reception due to the power outage, I got a phone call from one of the groomsmen saying that we needed to get to the Triple Crown Room ASAP because there were a handful of guys in there who stated they were “pitching everything in the room.” When we got there, sure enough, they were clearing out the entire room and thankfully we had awesome friends grabbing all of our stuff otherwise they were seriously just going to throw it all out. During this time, we also didn’t know that they were planning on completely flipping the St. Charles Room for Breakfast with Santa the next morning which was were we stored everything used during the reception that was then thrown behind the front desk. *They have photos up of their outdoor rose garden covered in Christmas lights which would make for great photos, but they don't have Christmas lights up in the rose garden and will NOT consider putting them up.

Nice staff but this is a very decrepit Dumpy, overpriced Hotel. Built in 1928 and looks like it hasn’t been touched since. Tacky old and cheap furnishings in rooms. Change out the dirty carpet in the elevators for God sakes. Make sure you make 11:00 A.M. check out or you’ll be charged another $100 every half hour. Pricy and weird experience people!!

I booked a breakfast with Santa at this hotel for 8:30 a.m. on the first Sunday they offered it. We arrived a few minutes early and were seated right at 8:30. There are 2 floors. The smaller tables are on the second floor where we sat. The buffet is on the first floor but easy to get to. Everyone working there was very friendly and the service was great. There was a large variety of food items to choose from and all of it was very good. After eating, you walk over to Santa and get a photo taken. You can buy the photo if you want to. There is also face painting available. My grandchildren are 3 and 1. They had a great breakfast and even sat on Santa’s lap. We plan on going next year. Great experience.

The staff was terrific with the wedding guests during the frantic weekend. The wait staff rocked and the bartenders were professional and friendly. The hotel is lovely, the breakfast tasty and the back garden is well tended. Plenty to do in town during your stay so no worries about that.
