This was our third time back to Matafonua and we had an amazing time. The staff and owners were very helpful. Food was superb. Whale watching memorable. Our children had an absolute blast. Matafonua is perfect for children. The dog Ollie is very safe as long as everyone follows t

Loved our stay, amazing people, food and company. Basic but beautifully simple lodgings. Communal shower was attractive and practical. Plenty to do or hammocks to relax. Great spot for water sports. Enjoyed the snorkeling, kayaking, supping and whale watching. The coral was amazi

I spent 3 nights at Matafonua during the humpback whale season. A perfect quiet location at the end of the island, on a secluded beach, with excellent swimming, snorkelling and diving. The individual lodge bungalows are very clean and a step away from the beach and lagoon. 80% of

I was travelling to Tonga for the whale season and this resort was recommended. Since it gets booked very quickly, I booked it 2 years previous and didn't really realise that the place had communal toilets/showers and meals. However, this was not a problem (despite me being an

Is there any surf break near the lodge?
Hi josh there are several b=reaks near to matafonua but they require a boat charter to get to them and that is not possible during whale season as the boats are flat out . During the months of jan march we have a pretty good break right here in our beach due to the seasonal nw swells see the video on vimeo numbered -202714667 it wont let me post urls on this forum hope this helps. the other 2 answers do not refer to our island group they refer to the main island of Tongatapu

Hi Lindsay. I wondered, does the lodge provide beach towels? Sounds a pathetic question but we are only allowed 15kg on the flight and the kids have huge, heavy towels. Cheers. Staff
Yes beach and bathroom towels are provided

When are the least windy months to visit?
Generally we have good winds most of the year Jan and Feb can be a little quiet unless we have a storm pass by. The trades are generally easterly which from your bungalow on the beach gives you great access to kite in the lagoon. Our location gives about 300 degrees of opportunity, the advantage to being on the tip of the island.
