We just returned from a wonderful trip to Port Douglas. We originally were going to stay at the Sheraton using SPG points but instead went with Thala to have a different type of lodging experience. Here are some things to consider about Thala Beach Nature Reserve. Location: It is about 50 min from airport (you do not need GPS in...

This was by far the best place we have stayed during our honeymoon in Oz. Hotel staff were lovely and super accommodating. We were given the best room in the lodge, staying in beach bungalows suspended in the rainforest. It was truly an amazing experience. Food in the restaurant was 5 star and the views are breath taking. Truly it...

We recently made our first visit to N Australia and were recommended Thala in favour of other better known properties in Port Douglas and the Danetree Forest. The pluses outweigh the minus's - location, setting and authentic pool area were slightly let down by tired accommodation and a generally efficient, certainly knowledgeable but not overly welcoming or relaxed staff. The...

Thank you agedbutcool for choosing Thala for your first visit to northern Australia. We're sorry to learn that Thala's eco-style bungalows weren't completely to your liking, though are pleased to hear how much you enjoyed dining at Osprey's Restaurant. Johan Klindt General Manager

We spent 3 nights in this magical place. The settings are spectacular, the scenery, nature, surrounding and serenity are just inviting to reenergise and bring romance back to your relationship. The downside, it is on top of a hill....literally which means that in order to get anywhere you will have to put your fitness to the test. Going up and...

We're thrilled ivo2002 to read your wonderful review and hear how much you enjoyed your visit to Thala. We are indeed a hilly property with bungalows linked by paved walking trails to the Main Lodge. Our 24 hour buggy service is popular with guests who prefer not to walk, or those with young children. We are in the process of...

Lovely little huts on stilts overlooking forest - good for bird and animal watching. Restaurant offers very good food with attentive service. Pity there is no spa but swimming pool is very good and enclosed by trees.

There are some truly special places that I have visited in my life - and this is one of them. Unlike some of the others which are in remote locations or difficult to access or simply far away, this one is right on my doorstep (well, relatively, given the size of this country) and relatively easy to get to. One...

Thala Beach Nature Reserve was honestly one of the most beautiful places I have seen! The cabins were comfortable inside with all modern amenities although situated incredibly close to nature. We loved the swimming pools surrounded by rocks and palm trees, the delicious meals in the dining terrace overlooking the South Pacific Ocean, and the breathtakingly beautiful walk to the...

Hi Claire R thanks very much for choosing Thala and for your wonderful review. It's true that wet season rains make this time of the year interesting as the rainforest really flourishes. We're thrilled to hear how much you enjoyed dining at Osprey's Restaurant, spotting turtles from the lookout, Oak Beach and our very special swimming pools. We look forward...

My family stayed here for three nights and loved it. After several weeks of busy travel, it was the perfect spot to explore at a more relaxed pace and take in the natural beauty of this special spot in the world. Our cabin was secluded, clean and comfortable and walking to and from it was part of the experience, breathing...

This is a little unusual but a place you won't want to miss, built on a hillside looking over the Coral Sea and in the middle of a tropic zone. Because it's built on a hillside the staff will pick you up in a golf cart to go to eat or hit the pool. Great dining and service with special...

Thala Beach Nature Reserve is a family owned 58 hectare nature and wildlife reserve 15 minutes south of Port Douglas. Get there from Cairns via a spectacular 45 minute drive along Captain Cook Highway. Elevated on stilts, 83 eco designed timber bungalows are discretely concealed within the forest canopy, blending in with the natural environment and feature ocean, mountain or forest views. Panoramic views are enjoyed from open-sided Osprey's Restaurant across the forest canopy and beyond to the Coral Sea. Guests and visitors dine amongst birds in the surrounding treetops, whilst enjoying modern Australian cuisine with friendly and attentive service. Granite boulders, waterfalls and overhanging trees create natural swimming pools blending discretely within the environment. Paths wind through rainforests and woodlands, connecting with secluded coves and beaches, passing through habitats for endemic birds, wildlife and flora. Guests enjoy complimentary guided nature tours by onsite rangers including tree planting, stargazing at an outdoor observatory, beach discovery, wildlife walks and bird-watching tours.
