My wife and I hiked from Pongola to Aloe Kaya and then took another hiking route back to Pongola. It was to say the least.....awesome! The hikes were not easy but well worth the effort. The scenery and atmosphere were unforgettable. It was especially nice to find cold drinks in the refrigerator after our first days hike. The hiking camp...

Decided on a spontaneous weekend away. Chose the lodge because of the hiking trails. We were charged to book out the whole lodge but only stayed in 2 rooms of the main area. Which was a really nice stay. Norah really took great care of us. But paying for the whole lodge seems really unfair. The 4stars are not up...

Dear Rozanne, I am terribly sorry to hear you had such an awful time with us. The creator, owner and sole manager of the Lodge and Trails was dying in ICU for 6 weeks prior to your stay. We are now trying to maintain his incredible legacy here but it has been a steep learning curve! As you saw things...

Reading some of the reviews of Five Assegais Estate, makes me wonder of how people's opinion can vary so much on the same subject. We had an absolute amazing weekend here with friends & 4 kids. We were met with smiles on arrival & assisted with luggage & groceries by Poppy & Norah. The house is beautiful, spacious & clean....

We booked the place out in March with fairly high expectations as the place is not cheap. We took the self catering option with worked out well for a big group. The lodge is serviced twice a day and the ladies were absolutely fantastic. The dam was well stocked and view spectacular! My gripes were as follows: 1. if you...

Together with friends we rented the entire house for the long weekend. What a delightful place, made all the more special by the 4 gorgeous resident dogs - Coco the daschund (who will creep into your heart as well as your bed if you give him half a chance!) and the collies Acorn (Aykey), Jango and Calabash. The stone house...

We booked online and drove through on Friday. We hit traffic and phoned several times ahead and left messages to say we would arrive after 8 pm. When we arrived there was an open door and a light on but nobody around. We eventually left and drove around trying to find alternate accommodation at 9pm at night. Now I am...

I hate to disappoint and I am very sorry about this ladies experience, we do offer a wilderness experience with a very long driveway, but I know that either Poppy or Norah stay up later than 8pm we offer a single house with no formal reception as part to the privacy and intimacy of the experience we offer. As far...

Great establishment: genuine people, quality and comfort. We felt at home and loved it. The staff are great, the setting outstanding and the host, Francis, is an absolute treat! We stayed 1 night only: to recoup after the 3day hike: best idea ever!

We have just returned from our 5th visit to Five Assegais this weekend. The estate and facilities remain top notch, matched with great hospitality and food provided by Nora and of course Francis. The summer rains have filled up all the dams, and the waterfall was a wonderful sight. Keep it up guys!

A last minute decision to go away for Easter turned into a fabulous weekend at the most enjoyable retreat from city life - Five Assegais Lodge, Machadadorp.
