Detailed Reviews
It's was last minute trip to Humpi.. But luckily found this Heritage property and got a good deal..
Pros: Large rooms and Excellent service.. The best part is the food.. The menu items are limited, but the all of them taste awesome.. It's not about the number of items, the taste matters..
Cons: This property is 40 kms away from Humpi, but the road to Hampi is good so just 45 mins drive..
Overall just go for it.. 😎

Overall a wonderful property to stay. Well maintained and peaceful location. Courteous staff and management. Will definitely recommend it. A different experience to stay in a palace hotel. Two different museums to see. Rooms are spacious and well maintained. Must visit property if you are planning Hampi. Little away from hampi but worth considering.

Great place with great service. Real Palace with great history! Staff was very cooperative. Rooms are big with all amenities. Authentic food and experience. We stayed in August and the weather was pleasant. Sight seeing spots are a bit far but still worth staying here if you plan a Hampi trip.

Quiet, beautiful, serene, historic, lovely. We stayed here for three nights and enjoyed the entire experience. Rooms are spacious, service was fantastic, food was great. It felt like stepping back in time. Really enjoyed our time here.
The only thing to note is this is a solid hour away from Hampi and the historic sites. We didn’t mind and there was plenty of time in the day to enjoy.

We chanced upon this heritage hotel while planning a trip to the majestic ruins of Hampi, North Karnataka, the capital of thd last powerful Hindu state, Vijayanagar(a), which collapsed in thd mid-16th century.
Hampi requires more than overnight given its size and landscape. We were not particularly attracted by the otherwise decent accommodation available in the closer city of Hospet. Feeling a bit moody and pampered, and not eager to mingle too intimately in the crowd, we were willing to compromise geography for comfort and for inspiration.
Sandur is almost an hour away from Hampi, and the road is not always a tribute to India's infrastructure. But we didn't regret the modest sacrifice.
Shivavilas offered us sumptuous surroundings, complete peace and quiet and royal service. There was absolutely nothing the able, courteous and very well-spoken staff wouldn't do to accommodate us, including satisfying our whimsical interest in the history of the residence, the princely state and the royal house of Ghorpade (named, in the Marathi language, after a lizzard! )
We were not the most demanding guests, but I have little doubt much more would have been done had we made unusual requests. Even at that we appreciated the enormous help in local sightseeing and food catering.
The hotel itself, former seat of the Sandur Maharaja and Maharana, is a masterpiece of cultured, self-composed planning and functionality, with high-ceiling, tastefully furnished rooms peppered with art and wildlife photos (the late M.Y. Ghorpade, son of the last Maharaja and and an able politician in his own right, was an accomplished photographer whose own work adorn the place.)
A rich library, with great collection of Indian and Asian books, is accessible to all.
Beautiful portraits of old royalty make it feel as though one communicates directly with princes and princesses.
The Ghorpades were not counted among the most powerful of India's princes. Theirs was a very small state, compared with the mighty ones to their north (the Nizam's Hyderabad) and south (Mysor). But they were, and continue to be, among the wealthiest, thanks to their mining holdings.
Mining in India doesn't exactly evoke the most pleasant associations. It involves injuries to the environment and exploitation of cheap labour. It appears not to be the case in Sandur, however, at least in the sense of social sensitivity. The Ghorpades are said to have paid their labourers for two years of idleness, since India's Supreme Court banned all mining in the land. If so, that's an act of extraordinary benevolence, which keeps the town of Sandur going.
Sandur is equidistant from Goa and Bangalore. Taking cartography too literally we opted for the Goa route. Wrong. Bangalore is likely to save you up to three hours.
In short, matching Sandur and Hampi may not be the most common, or indeed most economic choice. But it was a resounding success for us. If you can, give it a try. It's not a mere touristic choice, it's also intellectual and cultural an experience.

There is no buffet dinner lunch and dinner. You need to order from menu.
The closest airport is Vidyanagar (VDY) which has direct flights from Hyderabad and Bangalore by TruJet. The airport is about 30 mins from the Shivavilas Palace. The hotel can book transport to the airport and also to Hampi (which is about 1 hour away from the hotel). Alternately, there are many travel agents that can arrange a car for the full time that you are in Sandur/Hampi
Guides come in all shapes and sizes at Hampi from the basic types who are more comfortable in the vernacular to the more sophisticated ones speaking English and capable of showing foreign tourists around.
It is recommended that one selects a guide of choice in the vicinity of Krishna Bazar and agree on the duration and fees for the tour in advance.
There is a good guidebook on Hampi published by the Archaelogical Survey of India which is useful as a reference .
As I presume that you are staying at the Sandur Palace heritage hotel, you can seek out the affable Manager, Mr.Joseph
to assist in your search.
