Although the main lobby was clean and well-maintained, and the staff were polite and attentive, the condition of the rooms was concerning. Specifically, the third-floor rooms seemed to be in severe disrepair. The first room I was assigned, 304, had stained carpets and couch, a foul odor, and an unclean bathroom. I reported these issues to the front desk on the day of check-in, and they promptly moved me to another room.We were moved to room 308, which was next to the elevator. The room was not much better. While it had a fresher smell, the couch was ripped, there were dead bugs inside the photo frames, the cabinets near the microwave were damaged, the walls showed significant wear and tear, and the carpet was stained. Also, the ice machine on the third floor was out of service. When I raised these concerns with the staff, I was informed that similar conditions existed in other rooms. Given that I was checking out the next day, I decided not to request another room due to the inconvenience it would cause my family.
The hotel did adjust the rate for the first night due to the inconvenience, but ideally, we should not have been assigned such rooms in the first place. The hotel should address these maintenance issues before offering these rooms to any guests. Everyone deserves to receive the quality of accommodation they expect based on their booking. Had I known about the room conditions beforehand, I would have chosen to stay elsewhere. I want to extend special thanks to the hotel staff: Matt, Brannon, and Eric for their efforts to make my stay as comfortable as possible given the circumstances.
The staff was very friendly and helpful especially the maintenance guy with the dreads that I have forgotten his name. He was very helpful when we had to move rooms because there was mold in the bathroom and there was a leak in the ceiling over the bed. We were moved to a room on the first floor right by where the construction was so you can imagine sleeping in was impossible. Our new room was missing the fridge which again was rectified by maintenance. It seems as though there is something going on in every room as there are patches on the ceiling which look like there may have been a plumbing leak. ( My moms room had the same issues.) The lobby is beautiful but the rooms are very dated. The wall paper is peeling off the walls, the furniture is quite worn and the beds and pillows are very uncomfortable. My neck was sore my entire stay.
I would be very concerned that there may be a widespread mold issue at this property. I had a headache everyday that I was there.
If you are someone doing a one nighter then this property is a place to crash for a night. If you are staying multiple nights, spend the extra money and go into Mystic to the Residence Inn or a different Marriott property. I am a former Marriott employee and I have stayed at many properties. This is probably the most run down property I have been too and I would definitely not stay here again. The plus sides are quick access to Mystic, New London and Norwich as well as hot water and awesome shower gel. That is it.
1. If you are going to constantly update via email, post on the front door/checkin counter/elevator that masks are required, ENFORCE it. For two days I watched as not a single staff member even so much as ask unmasked guests to comply. If you have rules, enforce them.
2. 4am on August 16th, the fire alarm went off. I vacated the room with my wife and children. A chaotic scene unfolded in the parking lot as 4 fire engines and other cars showed up. Not a single staff member to be seen or heard from. As the engines slowly left the scene, guests inthe parking lot all looked around wondering what to do. It was becoming clear that no one was running this show - and that there was no present danger. Reluctantly, we returned to our rooms for a few hours of sleep.
2a. In the morning when l asked what had happened, l was given the response of "oh, it happens. Someone took their smoke detector down". First of all NO, it doesn't just happen. In 20+ years of business travel (60+ nights a year) I've had 4 fire alarms go off. Second, you have to be some kind of engineer to pull these alarms off the wall. They are not consumer grade First Alert smoke detectors. So, STOP lying.
As sad as it is for me to say, I was SO happy to leave this property. A sad place where staff simply didn't do their job. And worse, didn't seem to care.
The breakfast area was clean and the food was very good.
