Response from 57Richard, Owner at Earl Grey Bed & Breakfast
Responded 8 Oct 2017
The negative review of our bed and breakfast titled: "Unfortunate Changes?" of Sept. 12, 2017 calls for a response because parts of it, we feel, were unfounded. First of all, and before taking on the individual points of this review, we have to say this is the first time in the twenty-four years we have been open in Salisbury that we have encountered a negative review. However, we are not saying that in order to be dismissive. We take criticism seriously, especially when it comes from an obviously intelligent source. As to the charge that the positive reviews being a few years old is irrelevant. Not everyone who stays here writes a review, and with all due respect, not everyone uses TripAdvisor either. More to the point: the experience of these guests was not a good one, about which we are very sorry to hear. As to the "musty odor" they complained of: it had been unusually rainy and damp here for several weeks; it is possible, even likely that it had affected the atmosphere in the house, despite our best efforts and the use of a dehumidifier to prevent the problem. This was a very unusual and rare occurrence. As to the charge of a lumpy mattress: it is a very firm hotel mattress with two all cotton covers for protection, with a soft feather top which makes for a most comfortable bed. Many other guests have left or sent notes with glowing comments about their stay, and many of whom have made very positive comments about that bed, in particular ("it was like sleeping on a cloud," etc.). Obviously, the negative reviewers did not like the bed, but beds and bedding can be a matter of personal preference (Also, we use very fine all cotton crisp linens which are line dried and ironed). Finally, the charge that the carpets needed cleaning was nonsense, as they had recently been thoroughly cleaned. We are sorry these particular guests did not have a good experience, which we have noted, but we do appreciate the positive comments in their review, both of which we took careful note of. Patricia and Richard Boyle, Owners

We see that there are many positive reviews of this B & B, and that they are a few years old. We regret that our experience in early September 2017 was not good.

The accommodations - a sitting room and bedroom on the first floor, adjacent to a lovely garden- unfortunately ha

Travelling to the Salisbury/Lakeville area for a party, we needed a good
spot to stay, but for just 2 nights. White Hart, Interlaken, etc. demanded at
least 3 nights in season. Lucky for us we found the Early Grey. Charming,
erudite and informed hosts, wonderful breakfasts on

FYI, this B&B is listed as pet-friendly on TripAdvisor, but they do not actually accept pets in any of their rooms. (I just got an email response from the owners after emailing them to confirm that they'd allow my dog to stay there.)
"bedroom/bathroom en suite...and both were equally lovely and private."
"I think both rooms are great, the suite is very special"
"We stayed in the one suite that the B&B offers, but there's also an upstairs room with en suite bath that looked very nice."
"Only two accommodations. The guest cottage was excellent."
