Pawnee is a very well cared for campground in/near the Indian Peaks Wilderness, a gorgeous high-altitude setting (10,000+ feet). Paved roadway, clean bathrooms, potable water spigots, graveled level campsites (40+). Each site has a picnic table, fire ring, grill & bear box (for storing anything with a fragrance that might attract a bear - use it!). Elk loop (eastern area...

We were so surprised to arrive at the Campground at Brainard Lake and find it had been completely upgraded. You'll find 47 campsites with 11 of them being tent-only, walk-in sites. All campsites had beautiful new picnic tables; fire pits; raised barbecue grills; huge bear boxes to securely store your food and coolers; and level areas for RVs and tents....

Brainard Lake has good population of Brook Trout if you enjoy fishing. Also some wonderful trails to hike with unbelievable scenery. BUT the real attraction at Brainard Lake is the Moose! I've seen as many as twelve very large bull moose at Brainard Lake in one day! The moose are usually very cooperative to pose for photo's too!

We have tent camped all over colorado and this campground is by far the most beautiful place we have stayed. There are 8 walk-in sites that are full by 9am so come early. The vault toilets were clean and the campground is neat and quiet. The lake is a short walk or drive. We saw moose every day. Many hikes...

My wife hiked around Long Lake, my brother and I fished Brainard and the South St. Vrain. This is a lovely mountain spot. I would recommend it especially to those who may have difficulty getting about as it is over 10,000' but blacktop all the way, terrific views, and good handicap accessibility. We saw a bull moose right off the...

We visited Brainard Lake during the early season when the ranger station wasn't open yet. We hiked up the highway 2 miles to check out this spectacular lake with views. We want to go back in August and try some camping and hiking. There was still quite a bit of snow and trails required snowshoes are cleats in June when...

My parents used to be "Camp Hosts" at Pawnee campground so we spent a lot of time at Brainard Lake. I am a Colorado native and my dad stocked the high mountain lakes for Fish and Game so we have done good amount of hiking. My favorite hike at Brainard is the hike to Mitchell Lake in the late spring...

We were displaced from RMNP by the historic floods in Sept '13. We scrambled to keep the vacation going. Brainard Lake Rec has 10-15 hikes from easy to hard, it is a fee area but if you have a National Park pass, no charge. You hike at 10,000 feet. It's cooler. We hiked to Lake Isabella and South St. Vrain...

Just remodeled (about 80% done) and more clean, comfortable and enjoyable than any of the 5 other camping grounds we have been to this summer. The hikes, fishing, and camp sites make tent and smaller RV and most trailers and all tents a million dollar experience. I can't wait to go back.

Brainard Lake recreation area is a short drive from Boulder, CO and perfect day trip for hiking or overnight hiking and camping. Lake Isabelle Hike is where I take guests for the day when visiting - just four miles round trip and gorgeous mountain lake as well as vistas. Blue Lake is another great hike. You can take easy hikes...

“This area is great for day trips (and is arguably most famous for its convenient access to trails into wilderness areas), not just for camping.”
