Being Australian I have never had a white Christmas before or a white winter. I've seen hail a lot and imagined that snow was a fluffy, less hurty version of that. I was right! It was gently snowing when we arrived at the yurt and proceeded to get heavier once we had unpacked which was very thoughtful. The yurt itself...

We decided to stop in at the NP yurts on our way home from Steamboat Springs. Nice little getaway without the amenities. This would be as close to winter camping as the wife would ever allow. We had a nice fire that heated the yurt up and by the time we were ready for bed the yurt was pretty warm....

This area doesn't offer too much in the way of lodging, so finding these yurts was a bonus! The management was nice to work with, check-in was surprisingly easy, and the price is right (October 2012 = $55 / night if staying 2 nights, otherwise $60 per night). Be clear, this is a place for people that don't mind roughing...

Most back country Yurts are hike or snow shoe in only. These are readily accessible, you can drive to them. At first we were a little turned off by that, but decided to give them a try. The advantage is they allow dogs. We enjoyed it very much. They are well appointed, and stocked. There is propane cooking and wood...
