I’ve stayed here twice before, but this is my first summer stay so I wasn’t sure what to expect and I was worried with the negative reviews posted earlier this year esp during Covid. My observation below for those concerned.

Service:
Most staffs I came across are friendly & helpful. There were a couple of large groups during my stay & they were getting more attention which is normal, and some staffs are apologetic about it so I was glad they did that.

Had no problem with service till last day. They ran out of eggs due to truck delivery that morning, staffs could’ve told me immediately when I was seated but they waited till I ordered the egg dish to tell me eggs are not available. I noticed the same behavior with other guests too.
Also when I checked out, I told them that I’d like packed lunch to go. Then I sat around for a good 20 min without knowing what’s going on till I went & found someone and realized my lunch had been sitting outside of kitchen.
Worst of all, my luggage was just sitting in the golf cart the whole time when I checked out, waited for lunch & got my food. Then, I had to get someone to help me load luggage to my car just to realize another guest’s car blocked mine and had to find someone to move that car. All of these should’ve been done when I was checking out/ waited for my lunch. Basically wasted an hour on this, which was pretty annoying.

To echo the other guests’ concern, I also didn’t see a GM presence during my stay, and no one really asked about my overall experience either, which is a bit unusual for a luxury hotel this small.

Cleanliness/Covid-related measures:
My cabin was pretty clean, sure sometimes you still see ants & flies but you’re also in the wilderness in the summer, I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect completely bug-free. I’m a clean freak and I’m happy with the housekeeping service.
One thing is the room slipper tho, they don’t provide you with disposal kind so I feel a bit icky about whose foot were in there before.

I went to the bathhouse very early in the morning and there were trash/dirty towels lying around. I don’t know why it’s so hard for other guests to put their dirty towels in the basket by the door when they’re leaving but also wished the staffs clean the bathhouse in the morning.

As for Covid related, all the staffs wore masks and masks are required in the saloon. However I was told that they’d space guests out during dining hours but that’s not really the case. Everyone basically showed at breakfast at 9 and everyone showed at dinner at 7. Sometimes you had to share table with other guests and that was a bit scary.

Overall it was a very pleasant stay. Hotel is very dog friendly thank you, and I really enjoyed the food too. Minor service issues that could be improved. I’d still highly recommend. This is one of those magical places you don’t really have words to describe. Personally I prefer coming in the winter.

There is no place quite like Dunton Hot Springs. Winter, summer both offer completely different and magical experiences. We came for New Years Eve in 2016, and when we got married in 2019, we knew exactly where we wanted to do it :) (And they let you rent the town!)

Each cabin (& tent) are beautifully outfitted and unique. The beds are comfortable. It's hard to say which cabin is our favorite, we have been in them all at this point...honestly, depends on your mood! Check the listings carefully to see which one is for you (and if you are bringing a dog, make sure you pick a dog friendly cabin!)

Morning coffee is delivered to your doorstep, but the breakfast in the saloon is not to be missed. The kitchen is creative and delivers consistently every time. Dinners (precovid) were social experiences, and offered the opportunity to mingle with other guests as much (or as little) as you would like.

Over the course of the 7 nights we spent here (in both trips), the staff was very warm, helpful, and non intrusive. They go out of their way to make sure you are having a fabulous time and seem to genuinely care about making your experience special.

As far as activities go, there is so much to do, winter or summer. The hot springs itself is the obvious (and free) one. But we highly recommend fly fishing, hiking, and the horseback riding (my fave).

If you are on the fence, do it. There is no place more serene. Thanks Dunton, and hope to see you soon!

There are unique, luxury experiences, and then there is Dunton.

My wife and I first went to Dunton in 2017 for our honeymoon. Since then we have returned 1-2x a year for our annual "reset".

Overall:
The natural hot springs, top level service, amazing bedding, farm to table meals, craft cocktails, wood burning fireplaces, and unreal scenery all come together for the unique, luxury experience that is Dunton. I cannot wait till we get to go back!

The Service:
The staff is so friendly. They don'y only meet your needs but anticipate them. One time, my wife and I got our car stuck on the way in. I was worried about AAA, towing, getting home, etc. As I walked to the property, the staff kindly asked "are your keys in the car or on you". The next morning my car was in the parking lot. Another time, I was a little hungry and craving a mid night snack...they made me the most amazing grilled cheese after the kitchen was closed.

The Facilities
This is rustic, refined, and real. An original mining town that has been transformed into a 5 star property cannot be replicated. I love boutique hotels and I feel like Dunton takes this to another level. Add the natural (sulfur free) hot springs on-top of it, and you are in heaven.

COVID
Vacations look different right now. Dunton has adapted and still delivers an amazing experience.

I suggest you read all the bad comments before you decide to go there, we are all saying the same thing: there is no professional management , I don t like to write bad reviews but customers have the right to know what they are paying for and may be the owners are not aware of how their bussiness is doing . It is ran by unsupervised young people. It's unfortunate ,the place is magical , it has everything to be perfect but they lack trained personal. When we arrived it was raining , in order to go through the gate, they need to buzz you in, i had to stand in the rain for about 10 min until someone finally let us in . They apologized that they were short staffed . Nobody gave us a tour of the premises, we found out through talking to other guests the things we could do on site . During our stay we saw the employees do shots at the bar , while we re waiting to be served. We saw the kitchen staff disappear in the back to smoke marijuana . The hummingbird feeders were left empty for 2 days ,( the birds come and feed right next to the dining table so it ' s quite an important attraction) . Because one day our coffee wasn t send to our cabin like all the other days ,we had to go to the restaurant and get it ourselves , which is fine, we didn t mind, just to end up waiting 15 minute for a cup of coffee !!
Depending on who is working that day , the tables are perfectly set up with fresh flowers and blankets in case it gets cold or they are naked with only utensils and napkins ?! One day for lunch, there was only salad and vegetables , when we ask for more food we were told they re was 3 pieces of fish and that we were lucky to be the first ones to show up . The reason for the lack of food is that the truck didn t make it up that day . I asked for smoothie because lunch was so late i was starving and same answer, we have no fruits ?!!!!!! I felt really hungry during my stay there, i can tell you that. The activity shop was unattended most days with e bike on flat tires , there was even one that was left on the deck under the rain with it s helmet for 2 days , no one seem to care to return it to the activity center. We went on a $500 horseback ride for 2 person , would you believe i had to call them 5 times to get my pictures from the horseback ride !! It wasn t until Eric picked up the phone that the picture hunt ended. I really don t have time for things like that .
Last year We did Lone Mountain Ranch in Montana, we have seen management excellence in action , Dunton could be excellent but some serious change need to happen .

We were so happy to enjoy this place and we would have liked to have stayed longer yet was fully booked. There are many amazing factors and also room
For improvement as well.

Attentive staff, amazing rustic vibe and simplicity in design is key here.

Restaurant food amazing and cocktails and menus flawless.

There is construction work going on near the bathhouse which of course disrupted our tranquility whilst bathing. So do check that’s finished for the ultimate stay.

The hot springs are small yet well built around and the setting is intimate so never too busy.

Morning coffee was delivered around 30mins late which disputed our morning hike plans a bit yet no big deal. I set the alarm woke up for 7.30am, coffee was booked to arrive at 7.45am, by 8am no coffee, called them to remind them and by 8.15am was delivered.

Oh and do bear in mind they say nothing on the website about the 10mile pretty rigorous road in, only room
For one car so gets awkward driving up hill
On the edge of a steep
Cliff whilst making room for another car to pass.

Not for the faint hearted for sure.

Overall a great stay and I’m sure it will get even better.

Dunton is where you want to be when you want to get away from it all. Tucked away in a scenic valley about 45 minutes from Telluride is where you will find Dunton Hot Springs. The dirt road to the property offers great views and the hospitality and excellent cuisine awaits when you arrive at Dunton. Don't miss it!

We had a wonderful opportunity to visit Dunton Hot Springs this last weekend and let me tell you, it was everything and more than we expected! The remoteness of this property makes for a very unique trip into the mountains. The staff is beyond friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable. The simple, yet, well thought out preset menu for lunch and dinner made things very simple for us and allowed us to try things we might never have though to try. The food is so fresh and we love that they source and support local! There is a lot of care that goes into creating the dishes that they serve. We stayed in the Bjoerkmans cabin which was so cozy and inviting. During our stay, we got a good amount of snow which really set the mood for this location and it was so beautiful! This place felt like home the minute we arrived and we cannot wait to return!

We want to thank you all for doing such amazing work out at Dunton!

Fun bar, great staff, cute "town!"

On arrival, after travelling at 12 mph on an 8 mile unimproved dirt and gravel road with almost non-existent signage for the "resort," it does feel like you are stepping onto a western movie set - very quaint - and dusty!

Food was consistently mediocre, minimal, and marginal for any diet other than standard American. Wine pairings were fabulous! Kudos to the bartender!

Cabins had their charm and were clean enough. Porches were nice. No coffee or tea service in the cabins. Staff does bring coffe/tea upon request starting at 7:30 AM.

The Hot Springs were not particularly hot and looked more like watering holes than bubbling hot springs. We learned that the springs are not monitored for temperature or bacterial/parasitic content, so bathers beware.

I took one look at the Hot Springs and opted against exposing myself to the water, but my husband chose to enter 2 of the 3 springs multiple times. I don't know if it's related or not, but he hasn't felt well since.

As nice and enthusiastic as the employees are, we would not return to Dunton Hot Springs, nor would we recommend it to any of our friends. Interestingly, subsequent to our visit, we met a couple who had also been to Dunton Hot Springs. When we asked that couple if they planned to return or recommend, the answer was a clear, unequivocal, "No!" Enough said.

Telluride is only an hour (over the mountain) away and is likely a much better choice for R&R.

Dunton Hot Springs is a hidden gem! I cannot imagine a more idyllic place to kick back, relax in the amazing hot springs, hike, go fly fishing and experience breathtaking views. The meals were fabulous - imaginative and beautiful in addition to delicious! The best part about Dunton, however is the quality people. To a person, the people working at Dunton bent over backwards to meet every need. Preferences at meals were noted and consistently provided - without fail. We were made to feel like we were the only guests on the gorgeous property and that the only goal was to make sure we had an exceptional experience. We loved every minute!

My guess is they'll have fireworks. They had fireworks for a birthday party while I was there, so seems likely. They plan for most people's stays to be 3-4 nights. Regarding the children, their enjoyment is going to depend a lot on how outdoorsy they are. As the other person responded, the indoor activities are really geared towards adults. Not having been there in the summer, I don't know all the outdoor activities they have, but assume hiking and biking at a minimum.

Hello Emily, April is difficult to predict but most of the snow should have melted. Higher up in the trails there will probably still be snow but in general it would be gone. You can never tell with mother nature however. I hope this helps.
