The campsite is fairly typical. Some spots have more shade than others, and the grounds are kept clean. It is walking distance to the lake. Other than that.... our experience was not enjoyable partly due to the nearby freeway (I went camping to get away from traffic!) but mainly because of the camp host. I camp frequently and typically rarely see hosts, but this host was constantly going around, harassing and yelling at people. For example she came by at 10:01 PM to tell us to turn off our radio (which was not loud), so we asked if we could just turn it down so only we could hear it. Her response was "I said OFF" I mean she was the rudest person I have met in a long time. The only way I would visit these grounds again is if she were gone.

We stopped for one night at Lake Isabella and camped in Boulder Gulch campground in July 2009. I never been to Lake Isabella and I was curious of what it looked like. I loved the river that flow next to the road as we went up the mountain. Once you get to the top there is a small community next to the lake. We visited the lake during the week on our way to Vegas. The lake and campground was empty with a few other people camping at the same time. The kids enjoyed the beach area. Boulder Gulch Campground is right off Hwy 155 depending on which site you stay. At night you can see the headlights of cars and hear them as they pass by. The campground has some trees and big dry brush that give shade in the late afternoon, during the day well it’s up to you to find shade. The campsites are big and each site has its bench and fire pit with grill. The campground has flashing toilets and a shower. In July the month that we stayed at the campground the weather was hot and no shade will cool you down only the near by lake shore. The campground is next to the lake beach you just have to walk a few yards to get there. The water is not clear like other lakes, however is not nasty or full of trash and algae at least in our area. The beach area is clean and it is surrounded by big boulders hence the name. In order to launch a boat into the lake you must drive to the launch area. Since we did not bring a boat we didn’t see the launch area up close. In this campground the ants do bite. Be aware of the wildlife. Some of my family members including myself got bitten at night by ants. We did see a cute toad at the entrance of the restrooms and an average size snake on one empty campsite. If you plan on camping on one of the sites in Boulder Gulch make sure you are not setting up came in a “Reserved” site. Although there are “walk-in” campsites it is a good idea to reserve a campsite to insure you get a good campsite. On holiday weekends the campground is full. The Camp Host explained that although you can reserve a spot in the campground you do not have the option of selecting a specific site number. She explained that every day she gets a list of the people who reserved sites in her campground. Everyday she goes and puts a “Reservation” paper on her best sites, the ones with shade. When the campers who made a reservation arrives at the campground, they have first pick of the reserved campsites. The Camp Host was kind enough to give me the numbers of her best sites; they are as following 45, 6, 8, and 9. Site 11 has partial shade, site 12 is large enough for two tens and has afternoon shade, 40 and 36 are also great. To make a reservation call [--].
