Had a fabulous 3 night stay and we loved our Art Deco ocean front room complete with jacuzzi bath. It was clean and quirky with everything we needed. We were made to feel so welcome from the moment we arrived. The pool area was great and the roof top bar fabulous for watching the sunset with a delicious cocktail. What really made our stay wonderful though was the Chief Concierge Adrienne Miley - wow!! Adrienne couldn’t have done more to make our stay so special, from making amazing restaurant recommendations and reservations, arranging a driver to show us around Laurel Canyon and rearranging our tours to ensure we could fit everything we wanted to do into our short stay. She quickly understood what we liked from food to what we wanted to see and do. She is such an asset to the hotel and we’re so grateful to her, nothing was too much trouble - she’s wonderful! 🤩…
Great location for walking about Santa monica, super professional staff, lovely pool area, tasty food at pool, cool upstairs bar and deck for sunsets and views. This place has many of the original fittings from the 30’s if you do not appreciate that and want something more modern, go somewhere else. Thank you Shanghai la staff we had a great time and will return!
for $650 (including about $200 of taxes etc) this hotel is a total dump. grubby, sticky surfaces, dark and dated decor, gloomy elevators and corridors, and a lobby that smells faintly of cat pee. no kidding: i've stayed in tons of 4-star hotels and this does not deserve 2 stars. the bathrooms have crappy plumbing and drains that don't drain. the faucet heads in the sinks are so "prickly" (not aerated) that you can't drink out of them. the soaps and lotions are worse than holiday inn. the beds are lumpy and pillows lower quality than best western. the rooms are dark – black floors (always a mistake) and even the "deluxe king with ocean view" is tiny. the windows are rusty metal frame, and have not been cleaned in years, even though they open (but don't have safety retainers, so they bang and blow in the sea breeze). the skeleton staff appear to be untrained. the gym, however, is actually OK (though it's in the basement and you feel like you might get mugged winding through the utility passageways to get to it. i didn't use the outdoor pool, but it's small. the rooftop bar is tiny and grim, with a good view of the ocean; the interior areas up there are so dark you can't see the floor. it's a lot like a '70s miami club, complete with fake-gold-cracks in the wall mirrors. the surfaces are not tactile, or attractive. if they claim there was a $30m renovation, it must have been done in 1950 because nothing about this hotel is new. Not. One. Thing. so, yuck. avoid.…
Hotel lobby is dirty, windows in the rooms are dirty, not washed for months, whereas the first thing you look at is the window given we have an Ocean View room. This was the case also in all other rooms we saw in this Hotel. Several rooms have broken windows. Bathroom lamps are dirty, curtains are dirty, sun loungers are filthy, floor in Hotel lobby is not cleaned properly, poor management as people working in hotel have private phone calls when on duty. Good thing about hotel is however its location.
We paid $500/night for the worst hotel experience of our lives. The furniture was old and outdated, the floors were dusty and dirty and the windows were dirty and couldn't be opened. The bed was pushed towards the window with little room to sit and enjoy the view while there was a huge open area to the other side. The ironing board didn't work (legs were broken) and the chaise had white spots on it and looked as if it hadn't ever been cleaned. The plumbing was clogged and there were very few amenities. They had a huge private pool party the day we checked in (which they didn't warn us about) and we couldn’t use the pool. The party was obnoxiously loud and disturbing and had I known about it, I would have gone elsewhere. They didn’t clean our room during our entire stay and on the day of checkout we were an hour late checking out and they sent security to threaten us. Then they called our room every five minutes to harass us, even though we assured them we were doing our best to get packed up. Customer service is a joke here. This hotel is a stand alone hotel and run by a general manager who doesn't know the first thing about customer service. The young guy behind the front desk is extremely RUDE and should be working as a bouncer at a nightclub, not a hotel. The staff are untrained and unqualified to be in the service industry (except the Valet, who was extremely friendly and courteous). They do not know how to run a hotel and just trying to keep their dilapidated hotel afloat. Be warned, don't waste your money staying here! We’ve never been so disappointed. This place is an EPIC FAILURE.…
The location for Santa Monica beaches, pier and shopping could not be better. However, hotel needs some investment as it seemed a bit shabby. Understand its a beautiful, old building but there is paint peeling off in places, window treatments were old and needed replacing and the shower weak. The windows are single paned ( as you would expect in an old building) but you can hear everything in the street. For the price you have to pay, we expected more.
This hotel is historic, awesome art deco vibes with full resort level of care at reasonable prices. The rooms aren't overly luxurious, but our ocean view was perfect. The staff was extremely helpful, pool and rooftop bar are beautiful. Location is perfect walking to all of the Santa Monica pier fun.
This is probably the worst hotel I’ve stayed at. An all day pool rave party was in full swing when we arrived which meant we couldn’t use the pool and patio and the noise in the room was deafening until 9pm. No apology, no offer of any form of compensation. The pool area was then covered in trash for our enjoyment the next morning. Staff at the upstairs bar were border line rude, at best indifferent.
Dated hotel rusty room fixtures, close kitchen as and when they like so no guarantee of food - room left unserviced for first three nights only two towels in the room for this time Can only use stairs in the evenings to access room as lifts are used by the public to get to the roof bar instead
Asking for a partial refund since our experience was so bad. Found someone's retainer in the fold out sofa, previous guest hair in the shower, and the balconies do not have dividers between the rooms. It was one long balcony around the whole building, and I felt unsafe the whole stay at night. The staff also messed up on the check in process and then harassed us messing up our experience. The room was also hot the whole time.
