The Good
It's rare to find a place in the area that doesn't charge you to park your car. We've stayed at hotels closer to downtown and it's always been both a struggle to find a place to keep the car AND keep the price affordable. Here, your car can stay for free and depending on where you park it, you can likely see it from your hotel window. The area around the hotel isn't too busy so the stress of coming and going is minimal. Inside the room you've got a microwave and refrigerator which you may not expect from the look of this place on the outside. The price is affordable in comparison to a lot of other places nearby.
The Bad
Our room smelled like mildew and urine around the bathroom area. It's a little surprising that cleanliness issues like this aren't addressed. Some of the appliances in the room were simply inoperable. Maybe we just had a bad room during our 2nd stay there, but it seemed like a pretty big difference. The breakfast is about as basic as they come. We opted to not even bother this year (and we're pretty cheap so free breakfast is normally something we jump on). The beds aren't the greatest...but they work.
Overall, this place is all about your balance between cost and quality. Again, it's hard to find a place in L.A. for less than $100 a night that'll offer you the amenities and sense of safety as this place. It's worth a stay if you're looking to save money. If the cost isn't a problem, there are plenty of better places for you.
I would not have picked this hotel had I made reservations on my own. Rooms were remodeled nicely but on the small side. We had a room on the top floor (3rd) facing Floral St. Just had a view of the business building across the street. It was a Saturday night and the traffic was heavy enough to keep us up most of the evening. Try to get a room on the opposite side of the building if you really need to get some sleep. You only get one set of towels per person. No extras in the room. If you need more get them when you check in.
Walk ways needed a serious power washing. It made the place look more run down then it actually was.Pool is tiny and didn't look very clean.
Free breakfast was OK. Had all your basics. Area for eating consisted of two tables right next to the check in counter. The young man at the check-in counter was very pleasant and helpful.
The Floral Inn will do if your on a tight budget. Just make sure your room is not on the Floral St. side.
