Detailed Reviews
After sifting through 20 accommodation choices in Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Carmel, I decided on the Monterey Bay Inn for its value for what you get. All rooms have good-sized balconies (not just a Juliet style one), with all categories except for 1 (Cannery Row View) offering a water view. Based on the location, the Cannery Row view does not offer much of a view unless you just need a room to sleep in. I recommend spending a little extra and booking the harbor/ocean view room especially if you plan on getting takeout during most of your stay due to the current Covid situation.
Since we were celebrating a milestone birthday and I booked a month and a half in advance, my request for a top floor room was granted and we definitely did not mind eating takeout in the room with the view through the door. Our complimentary daily breakfast we chose via a hang tag, delivered to our room was perfect to enjoy on our balcony since we were very lucky with the warm sunny weather during our 2 night stay. Because they were already delivering breakfasts directly to your room at your preferred time pre-Covid, they are one of the only places that are still able to offer breakfast during this challenging time. Nothing fancy but being able to have warm (vs. prepacked) pastry in a basket and a saran wrap plate of freshly sliced fruit vs. just a banana or apple is something that is a luxury right now.
The location at the quieter end of Cannery Row enables you to choose walking either way for your morning walks, down Cannery pass the aquarium towards Pacific Grove or the opposite way towards the Old Wharf. Note: We were here on a Thursday and Friday night so was quiet but summer like crowds descended on Saturday.
There is a daily parking fee and the spaces are quite narrow so would be a challenge if you have a large truck.

From the minute we arrived we were amazed, the clerk Kyree greeted us and checked us in giving us a lovely room overlooking the bay. When we opened the door we were so pleased to find what can only be described as a 4 star hotel accommodation at a much less price. In every way it was wonderful, lovely furnishings, spotlessly clean, a huge bathroom and so much more. it was located in Cannery Row area, easy walking to Fisherman's Wharf and some great restaurants. Also so convenient to explore the surrounding area including Pebble Beach. Wished we did not have to leave. We highly recommend this hotel

Best place ever! If I could give this place more then 5 stars I would! I couldn’t be happier with the stay! They over booked cannery row and then upgraded us to ocean few. Very nice people very friendly. Rooms were very clean brought breakfast up to the room if we needed anything they were more then helpful will definitely spend the money and go back again.

Parking is not included. Paid over $40 for one night stay. Just shy of $400 for the night for a room with no sound damping (it gets loud outside on the street), no A/C. Most things listed as amenities, you will be charged for. They did provide a fan for the room but the cord isn't long enough to reach the screen door to help move air. It also didn't help that when we arrived, the entire city lost power for HOURS. It was close to 6 hrs before it came on and the ice machine is all electric. It was a horrible experience for price. I will not book with them again.

Hello, Thank you for the review. We are sorry for the issues you experienced during your stay. However, at the Monterey Bay Inn our parking fee is $24.00 per day. Also, there are no extra fees for the amenities we offer, other than the Electric Car Charging Station. We have outlets in our guestrooms that are near our balcony so fans can be placed near the window. During the time of your stay there were rolling power outages happening throughout the state, and in Monterey. Unfortunately, we were not notified in advance for the 2 hours we were without power. After which, everything was fully operational. Sincerely, Management of the Inns of Monterey

The location is very good. Slightly away from the hustle and bustle of the main part of Cannery Row, this hotel is a bit quieter, and the location is good for walking to either Cannery Row or Fisherman’s Wharf. Both are about 10 minutes’ walk away.
The hotel is not cheap. We paid a total of $521.05 for one night in an “ocean view” room that is right over the water. The basic room rate was $439 with the difference being the cost of parking ($24/night) as well as taxes and fees. This was for a weeknight in late September.
Somewhat cheaper rooms that look out over the nearby beach and park are available.
Since our prior visits the mattresses seem to have been replaced with lower, and harder, ones. I did not have a good night’s sleep on the new mattress. The rest of the room was pleasant and clean. The bathrooms are nicely decorated and practical.
Breakfast is included. This consists of fruit, pastries, one yoghurt and one boiled egg for each guest. Coffee and other drinks are also available. A newspaper used to be delivered with the breakfast, but this is no longer included. You fill out a card before bed with breakfast choices and each item is either “yes” or “no” for both guests.
Small touches such as note pads, corkscrews with the hotel’s name, coffee service, etc. have been removed from the rooms. Some of this may be Covid-related and hopefully they will return in the future.
The open-air hot tub on the top floor was open and was very enjoyable.
The hotel rooms are not air conditioned. California, even on the coast, can have some very hot weather especially in the months of August through mid-October so you should consider the weather forecast before booking or consider moving to the Monterey Plaza Hotel down the street if a heat wave is predicted.

We stayed here the week after Thanksgiving in an Ocean View room that was spectacular. The carpeted room itself is very well appointed with a comfortable king bed, down pillows, individual night stands, a work table and chair, 2 side chairs and a large table, 3 drawer dresser that doubled as a stand for the 48" flat screen TV. Custom lighting with recessed ceiling can-lights with dimmers, a table lamp, floor lamp and 2 bedside reading lamps. Great WiFi. The walls were tastefully decorated with local themed art. There was a mini frig under a shelf in the hallway holding a Keurig coffee pot, tea pot, mugs and glasses. The bathroom was spacious with more ceiling lights, his/hers sinks, tiled floors, granite counter, a wide mirrored closet with safe and tub/shower combination. The lav was in a separate room to itself. The private balcony patio overlooking the the ocean had 2 chairs, a table and flower pot with flowers. The views were incredible, wildlife everywhere looking across the bay including sea otters and sea lions feeding in the kelp be right out front. The patio was accessed by a sliding glass door with screen and 3 separate wooden louvered doors. Breakfast was delivered daily to the room consisting of your choice of fresh fruit, eggs, yogurt, a carafe of coffee or tea, pastries and juice. Incredibly good. There is a $24 daily parking fee for the ground level garage. Well worth it as we found everything we wanted to see within easy walking distance. The hotel has 2 hot tubs that we saw and outdoor reading, visiting areas. Fresh cookies in the lobby daily. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. This was our first time staying at MBI, but won't be the last.

This hotel was an overnight stop off for us as part of a bigger road trip through california. It was in the most stunning of locations, easy to get to and short walk of less than two minutes onto Cannery row. The room was was clean, spacious and the staff were courtious and the hotel facilitated breath taking views of the pacific with sea lions singing just a few meters away. I understand its a perfect location for whale watching but sadly we didnt have time. I'm sad we only spent a night here.

Eclectic and stylish, this place oozes with Old World charm. Large comfortable quarters, tastefully furnished and decorated, where no detail has been left unattended, up to and including the little paper doilies under the drinking glasses and the silk bathroom curtains. Everything you need is provided, no false covid excuses in order to cut operating costs, thank goodness somebody still remembers what the service industry is supposed to be about! There is even a pair of binoculars to admire the multitude of birds around. Reception is very friendly and helpful. Monterey Bay Inn has character and style. Twenty minutes walk to Doc’s Western Biological, for those of you who know what I’m talking about. I haven’t been to Monterey for a long time and was sorry to see the wonderful cartoons gone, I hope they saved them in a museum or library. The pictures I am attaching were decorating what is [wrongly] named The Bear Flag Building, they are from my private collection and are gone now. Delicious breakfast is included at all price ranges stays at the hotel and it’s served in the room! Ask for a room on the top floor with views on the water, you’ll love it!

This hotel was awesome! We spent a few days here and it was great. The continental breakfast delivered at your door is SO convenient and safe, and the staff is super nice. Lovely views of the harbor, and the seals aren’t so bad at night, actually thought it was cool to see and hear them ;) Some people in these reviews complain about thin walls, and we definitely heard the person above us walking around, but nothing too disturbing or anything I felt the need to complain about, especially with the views you get! Great price, parking was easy, and there is a perfect walking path to Fishermans wharf that is even well-lit at night. Very convenient hotel and I felt very safe in our clean room. Even seemed like they washed the carpets before we got there, could definitely tell it was cleaned to the max. Thanks for a great stay, we will be back! With love, from SoCal!

We had a snafu with our travels and at last moment had to find a hotel in Monterey for 2 nights. Due to the price we selected The Cannery Row view room which turned out to be large by hotel standards, had a comfy, king size bed with a large bathroom and a nice size balcony. It was so windy and cold I’m happy we didn’t pay extra for an oceanfront. Did not have a restaurant on-site but did offer continental breakfast brought to your room each morning. The location was convenient, close to all attractions and easy access to Hwy1. I was concerned about the noise level being on Cannery Row but the only noise we heard on occasion was that of the seals which one would hear from anywhere in that location. The only item we didn’t like was they charged you $24/day for on-site parking. We felt that was a lot considering your a customer.

Hello, Thank you for the review and comments. We're happy to hear you were able to stay at our hotel and that you had an overall comfortable time staying with us and enjoyed our location. Regarding the parking fee, this goes directly toward our efforts to create a secure environment; this includes a night security guard, security cameras, and other features that help to keep the parking lot safe and exclusive to our guests. We feel the amount we charge is reasonable, especially when compared to some of our neighboring hotels. We hope this does not deter you from staying with us in the future, and we have the opportunity to welcome you back during your next visit to Monterey. Sincerely, Inns of Monterey Management

Maybe, but the water is very cold. I saw more people in the water scuba diving or on kayaks at San Carlos when we stayed there. A few at the shore but not a whole lot.
